oh i HATED all the colours of the dark (almost to crawdads levels!!) - still angry that i wasted my waterstones points on it and it’s been a year 🤣

HAPPY BIRTHDAY FOR TOMORROW TAURUS QUEEN! HAVE THE BEST DAY WITH HOPEFULLY SOME BETTER BOOKS 😘🥳
Oh god did you!? I was hoping it was my fault and not the book. Comparing it to Crawdad is the ultimate insult from you 😂 Why so hated?

(And thank you, birthdays always make me sad so I figured it was just my concentration failing me today)

I’m looking for a new book to start this evening and spotted that I’ve got both Anything is Possible and Oh William (books 2 & 3 in Elizabeth Strout’s Amgash series) sitting unread on my Kindle. Given to recent love for her on here they seem like the right choice!

I do remember reading My Name Is Lucy Barton a few years ago (obviously not the details!) and don’t remember been blown away by it. Having said that I wouldn’t normally buy the next couple of books from a series unless I liked the first one! Only one way to find out!

Oh gosh, I spent almost a tenner on this one as a birthday treat (42 tomorrow!) as it’s getting rave reviews but I couldn’t get past page one. I hated the writing.

and then I cast my net wide across genres but none captivated me

Happy birthday for tomorrow @Carapop! May your day bring you lots of books so good that you actually remember the plots!

as a brief summary: child characters who speak like grisled police detectives, one of whom is (despite being an actual child) allowed to speak to the town sheriff about ongoing crimes and run around actual crime scenes. another child speaks purely in poetic metaphors (the child she recites these extremely long metaphors to remembers them word perfect for decades). we are somehow supposed to be invested in this despite the fact that it’s all so overwritten i wasn’t sure what we were meant to be focusing on. every chapter ends with a character saying a line of dialogue that the author obviously pictured over the end credits of a hbo adaptation.

the writing was also SO pleased with itself that i found it insufferable and john irving should sue him for having his entire prose style stolen. you did the right thing by abandoning it!

Oo I bought All the Colours.. in the Kindle 99p deals as I’ve heard some good reviews for it. But agree they’re mixed. And I think we have similar tastes Lablonde! I’m going to give it a go, I didn’t hate Crawdads but I also didn’t love it.

Any regency romance readers? (What absolutely awful alliteration!) I really enjoy Rosalyn Landors narration and i’ve recently discovered a few of Mary Balogh’s narrated by Rosalyn Landor on Libby. I’m listening to Simply Unforgettable and I love it so much! A prim schoolteacher with a past and a Viscount end up snowed in an inn together 👀 and you’ll never guess what happens next 😄

i LOVE regency romance (and spend way too long thinking about my georgette heyer top five 🤣) - i’ve never heard of mary balogh and you have sold me on this by the synopsis alone!

Totally recommend, i’m going to buy a physical copy of this one and I’ve got rid of nearly all my physical books! What is your Georgette Heyer top 5? I see the Corinthian is on kindle deal is it worth reading?

right now (but always subject to change!) it’s:

- the grand sophy
- frederica
- arabella
- a civil contract
- cotillion

but i would genuinely recommend anything by her - she does banter so well and always has a lovely dog character, which i like! the corinthian is a very fun read so i would give it a try if you haven’t read anything by her before.

Hi books thread! It’s been more than 3 years since I was active, aka since my daughter’s birth. But I really am trying to get back into physical books. I listen to a lot of audio books. Anyway.
Has anyone finished Yesteryear yet? I devoured it. Had no clue what it was (time off from the bookosphere and all) and saw a short on yt that stated the premise and immediately went to buy it. Started it Thursday on a train from the UK and finished it tonight. Would love to discuss

or maybe I already missed the discussion

And a totally unbelievable storyline involving a self taught artist.
And is 200 pages too long.

Annoyed I got sucked into hype and bought the hardback.

Can anyone give me the tips to find the kindle deals? I’ve had my kindle for 18months, still read physical books in majority but I’ve found this year that reading on kindle is motivating me to read more!! And joining this thread and the book club thread has given me incentives and ideas for tbr!!

You be mother by Meg mason is dragging a little bit 🙈🙈 I am enjoying it but I’m just entirely sure where it’s going.

I’m 68% through
Hey guys, I managed to stick with it and finished the novel. It was quite laborious to finish however, in the last few chapters it really picked up and I balled my eyes out at the end. I just have some questions. Am I able to ask them without spoiling it for anybody else I just wanted to clarify a few things.
