I just finished Swept Away by Beth O’Leary on audiobook. I’m not usually an audiobook person but do quite a lot of driving so thought I’d give it a go.
Terrible story, 2 stars. Also the northern accent used for the woman who voices Lexi kept slipping which annoyed me!

I finished writers and lovers tonight. Given it three stars, I was wavering between 3 and 4. I liked it but I think it’s one of those where if someone asks me what it was about in twelve months time, I’d struggle to remember much of the plot.

My January reads. Favourite was probably The Only One Left, worst was It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas which was for a book club and was very much like a bargain bin book from The Works.

I love Riley Sager but I think The Only One Left was one of my least favourites! Have you read any of his other books? They’re great.

I have just started the first of the Blackout Murders books. Feels very easy reading and cosy so far.

Thanks for this, I haven’t but I’ll take a look

My January reads.
I only finished A Heart of Christmas out of needing to finish the book. It was terrible.
loved Atmosphere and Winter Solstice was my annual reread of a book I love. BUT I was really slow on reading as the last couple of weeks of Jan I was really ill with a cough / cold and run down and exhausted.

Back on it for Feb and last night I finished Fourth Wing. My first “romantasy” and the first fantasy I’ve read in years (the last probably being HP)… I quite enjoyed it! My least favourite part was probably the romance. I got a bit bored in the middle. But enjoyed the end enough again I will likely read Iron Flame.

Just started Blue Sisters by Coco Mellors and I'm struggling to get past the names Bonnie Blue and Lucky Blue. I just envision such totally different people than the ones being described based on those names 😭

I wasn't sure if it was worse on audio than it would be reading it, the voices were so annoying. I just found the whole thing so implausible! They would not have survived.... Don't let it put you off audiobooks. I think 2*s is quite complementary to be honest... not Beth's best.

Is this is a recent book? If so, surely the author/editor/publisher had to know about the notorious real people with those names???

It was published May 2024, I think from a quick google search (on safe mode!!) Bonnie Blue got popular in September 2024 after going viral on tiktok, but Lucky Blue Smith was definitely on the scene before that and I guess just not cropping up in conversations with Coco Mellors 😅

As someone else who really disliked The Only One Left, which of his others do you recommend I try?

I tried this and it just wasn’t for me. It didn’t help that it was in audio. Let us know how you get on and if I should give it another try

I've read about 80% of this, struggling to care enough about the characters to finish it!

I really liked The Final Girls (I think his first), Survive the Night and The Last Time I Lied. They are all more classic crime thrillers with a strong storyline. If you didn’t like The Only One Left, I’d avoid The House Across the Lake - similar vibes and gets ludicrously far fetched at points.

Am reading The Goldfinch. It's a huge book and I'm about 170 pages in but I love it, Donna Tartt has the most gorgeous writing.

I can see why she hated the film adaptation, there is no way you can translate prose/storytelling like that to the screen and do it justice. That the filmmakers chose to tell this story non-linear is utterly bonkers, no wonder the film was such a big flop and got ripped to pieces.

one of my favourite books of all time. i love her writing, it’s one of the most devastating depictions of grief and almost apathetic depression that i have ever read. parts of it sing. i adore it.

it could only be attempted as a really prestige mini series: i don’t know why they even attempted a film. aneurin barnard was a great boris though, wasted 🥲
