I can’t do book clubs because I’m one of those who can’t remember a bloody thing when I’ve finished the book I really wish I could. I tried to blog book reviews and other than this is really good/crap it didn’t go far

I go to an in person one that is really honest. There is usually a divide in the group between those who loved it and those who hated it, and it really varies book to book. Personally I wouldn't want to spend time discussing a book if I didn't feel I could be honest with what I thought. @veronica71 I can definitely relate - I have googled a summary of the plot on the day of book club before where I've finished it and can't remember what happened or the names of the character. I've started making notes sometimes to help avoid this

The last library one I went to had two people who pretty much didn’t get anyone else get a word in. One of them dragged a bunch of dried herbs in to see if the smell reminded us of the previous book (which she had slated). She made such a mess with dried bits everywhere. I decided to leave after that last straw

Super honest in mine it’s one of the things I like about it. Also sometimes people haven’t even read the book or DNF. It’s one of the few I’ve found where nobody cares if you’ve read or listened to it either. I went to a club before that was waaaay too intellectual and I felt so out of place

Are any of you in bookclubs? How honest are you if the book isn’t good. Maybe I’m too honest and should let things go and say ‘yeah, nice, good’ Got the feeling in my last meeting that my negative reviews aren’t appreciated

Only online ones and I've always been honest. I would find it very weird if I wasn't allowed to say anything negative, even if I wasn't particularly nice about it.

It's not a fan club!

What's the point if you can't have a critical (analytical) discussion?

Why is that called "Wuthering Heights" like the film? Is it not actually the book?!

I don't like movie covers on books, but I deffo don't like it when it looks like it's being sarcastic!

I’m confused! Wuthering Heights is both the book and the film isn’t it? They haven’t changed the name have they? (It is Friday and I have had a crazy week so apologies if I’m missing something obvious! )

I read earlier as it is only inspired by the book isnt the actual story from the book...

The "Wuthering Heights" thing is morbidly fascanting to me because it seems like what Emerald Fennell has done is metaphorically take a steaming piss all over the book and Emily Bronte. Her film is coming across as anti-literature and anti-intellectual as you can get.

I enjoy seeing what people can do with well-known source material that has been translated to other mediums many times and sometimes people are genuinely inventive in impressive and interesting ways.

EF seems to have approached WH like someone going up to a Van Gogh in a museum and wrecking it with their own scribbles in a fit of disgust. But why...?

Oh that is bleeping awful.

I hate it anyway but in this specific case it feels strangely spiteful.

Will hug my old paperback tight and hope I don't need to replace it any time soon.

tbh wuthering heights is a beautifully unhinged book so i’m not entirely horrified by someone going full ham on an adaptation. emerald fennell’s films are just usually a bit too pleased with themselves though. my issue with all wuthering heights adaptations is that they forgo the last half of the book, which is the most interesting part, AND leave out the tree headbutting, which is my favourite part 🥲

Yes - the thing is it’s such a interesting book that you could make a really interesting film by putting it in a different era and so on but stick to the bloody story

Even doing something like setting it in 2026 could work really well and be a cool new spin that would attract da yoofs but EF is coming across as one of the laziest directors out there. It's all willies and fannies all the time like we've not already had decades of cinema not restricted by the Hays code. It's like giving a 12 year old boy a blank cheque and a camera. Snore.

I don’t know why it’s making me so cross - I hated the book!! But I love the Brontë sisters
