My December wrap up. Four books which is what I generally aim for.

I download them for free then buy the paperback if I like them. I saw a tik tok of a woman who puts £10 away in a sealed money tin for every book she completes. I might give that a go. Ive updated my goodreads challenge for the year so now ready to get stuck in.
I went and saw the film last week having not read the book and enjoyed it, despite Sydney Sweeney’s breasts being horrifically under supported throughout.
However, halfway through the film I thought, “Oh, this is going to be The Last Mrs Parrish in a slightly different setting.” And then I got really pissed off that a plagiarised story has had the big Hollywood treatment. A quick google has shown me that a film of The Last Mrs Parrish is coming out so I think I’ll re-read that plus the prequel and sequel and not give Freida McFadden any more of my money or time. I’m aware her plots being extremely similar to other’s stories has already been discussed on here.
I may also have bought the rest of multiple series after reading Book 1...then the rest sit on my TBR for a whilei do thisESPECIALLY now i have a kindle. i blame my ocd making me a completionist but i can’t stand knowing i have an unfinished series so i will frequently just buy the whole thing without having even read the first. it has backfired so many times and yet i never learn 🥲
2026 will hopefully be the year of not needing to complete/own every series I like.My local library is a bit pants though as they don't seem to have much of what I like. For example, they don't seem to have all the Agatha Christies!!
so I've been buying them when they go down to 99p etc, but she does have like 66+ books...Also the waitlist for some of the new releases are just too long for my impatient brain so I do end up buying them and then of course wanting to get the rest as they come out. E.g. Richard Osman and Richard Thorogood both release a book or so a year and I've been collecting them as they come out.
But there are things I can try to curtail. Like I enjoy PD James and have read about 4, but I can buy/borrow the remaining 10+ books one by one rather than buy them all to gather dust on my shelf waiting for me to get to them...but I completely get the battle with that completionist urge. I discover an author... I google them... See they have a whole back catalogue... My brain works overtime weighing how/when to obtain the complete collection...
I'm like this with hobbies too. I get the bug, I obsess, it becomes a whole thing, I overthink, get in a mess

So if I find an author I like, instead of buying their whole back catalogue, what I will usually do is add the next one I want to read to an Amazon reading list so i don't forget about them? My December reads, definitely quantity over quality
I've counted my books! I have just over 700 on my TBR pile and just under 500 physical books in my house (although a lot are reference/cookbooks) so I think what we can say is I don't need to buy anymore books but we all know I will .....
When I say my tbr I mean physical and Kindle books. I can say an exact number as since I went on the great purge of late 2024 and 2025 I do not let my tbr get over 8.

I always understood TBR to be the books you intentionally plan to read, a literal list you work through, not just the unread books you own.
If a TBR is a reading list, mine is always 0-1 as I choose as I go and rarely think beyond my next read.
Then there are books I don’t own but have every intention to read. Or books I want to reread. I see those as more TBR-appropriate than just books I own.
I have over 200 unread digital books and 20-30 physical ones which I obviously bought with the intention of reading, but I wouldn't consider it my TBR as there are reasons that could change. Like, if it gets bad reviews or adapted to TV/film.

I think I said the other day I've removed like 8 books from my TBR. Well I've added twice as much back on
I read the book and have seen the film. Not sure I would recommend the book after seeing the film. There are some minor differences between the two but nothing major.
I only read it in December and had forgotten a lot of it. It is a quick, easy read but nothing more.
First book of 2026 complete! Not sure why im so pleased about finishing a book but there you go! It was the Parisians by Marius Gabriel, now reading A Charm of Magpies by KJ Charles as my 2nd pick of the year!
My first one ticked off as well - sounds like love by Ashley Poston. It was fine, it got a bit schmaltzy towards the end but was engaging enough. I really like the seven year slip though.
Now I’m not sure whether to start a new one tonight or find something on tv to watch instead.
If anyone else is watching The Traitors, I’ve just seen that Harriet Tyce is one of the contestants.

Finished my first - Georgette Heyer's False Colours, which also completes my first read of her Regency Romances! I still have a few of her other books which I'm planning to get through, but it's both satisfying and slightly sad to be done with this part!
I hope you enjoy A Charm of Magpies - I think it's such a fun series!

Ah I wondered the same thing as well. She was the only Harriet I could think of who writes thrillers! Nice to put a face to a name, I find her a bit hit and miss though, I liked Blood Orange and also The Lies You Told (think thats the title) but haven't enjoyed her others.If anyone else is watching The Traitors, I’ve just seen that Harriet Tyce is one of the contestants.

I class my TBR as the books I want to read and the list I have on Goodreads for me to work through. Some of them I have in physical book and some are on Kindle. But a lot I get from the library so they are on my TBR but pending me getting hold of them
I currently have 148 on my TBR - which I whittled down from about 800 🫣 as I thought it’s so unrealistic and unachievable. Now it’s more realistic that I could accomplish it in a couple of years. I’ve decided once it gets below 100 I can add more books …. Unless a book sounds so up my street I can’t ignore it!
