I will say I think Reese actually has a vested interest in that she’s had her book club for years and appears to be a big reader herself.

I agree that most joint author books are rubbish and usually only done for publicity, I thought the HC/LP book was brilliant. But I love Louise Penny - can’t wait for the next Gamache book.Yes! Not a book hangover as such, but I finished John Williams's Stoner yesterday, and it was so quietly devastating that I can't stop thinking about it.
that book wrecked me. i still think of it. like you say, very quiet, very gentle, very normal but absolutely heartbreaking

Slightly annoyed with myself this morning as I was hoping to finally finish Lonesome Dove last night but fell asleep with about 30 pages to go!
it has definitely been the big, epic read I was hoping for and I’ll actually be sad to finally finish it. For 900+ pages it’s felt like a relatively quick and easy read. I’ll definitely be going for something more normal sized next though!

it’s just the simplicity of it which is devastating (a god in ruins by kate atkinson has a very similar vibe if you ever want to break your own heart again!) gorgeous book.i’ve been meaning to read lonesome dove for SO LONG. i bought it during lockdown because it got recc’d as a perfect stay at home read and never got to it
i love love a good 800+ book so you may have convinced me.Go for it! I was a bit worried it would be all old school Western/Cowboys and Indians, which there is a bit of, but there’s way more to it - interesting, varied characters with believable histories and interesting relationships, multiple plot lines that weave together well, a few sad bits too. I’ve seen some people describe it as the best book they’ve ever read which I think is a step too far, but I can totally see why its raved about so much.

I'm muddling my way through Time Shelter by Georgi Gospodinov and god it's like pulling teeth! and no speech marks drives me up the wall.

I haven’t, I bought it then deprioritised it after reading it was hard work.. I really like the premise though so will get to it but maybe alongside something more readable.

when I see one I think ‘ah perfect to get stuck in to’ then end up picking up a 400 page book instead. Maybe it’s also a bit of ‘so many books to read, I can get through more of them if I park the long ones’. Having said that - I sped through Covenant of Water earlier in the year.
Top of my chunk TBR are Goldfinch, 11.22.63, Love Songs of WEB Du Bois and Bronze Horseman.

i love the idea of a “chunk tbr”. i blame my love for it on enjoying classic lit so much (especially classic french/russian lit where you’re lucky to be under 600 pages!) - though i do get that it’s hard to manage if you’re aiming for a goal because you know it’s going to take up so much time.
also i’m reading the courting of bristol keats right now (speaking of long books) and it is simply Not Very Good. another thing about long books, if they’re not great you have to decide whether to continue the journey or not i’m going to do what the editor seemingly did and do a speed run.

I think my chunky books appetite has been ruined by books that just didn’t need to be that long aka priory of the never ending orange tree, Babel’s 600 pages felt like 1,000.
