How quickly do you pick up a new book?

From the last page of one to the firstpage of the next?

The books I read just as books I can pick the next one up later that day/tomorrow.

But some books (Sebastian - This is How We Are Human) give me a hangover and I need to sit with that. And then others - The Strike series I need to sit and process all the parts of the book.

I generally will just start the next one, but in some cases definitely find that I need a day or two to process and if I try to start something else too soon I find I just can't really settle into a new book.

We were away this weekend so not much reading time, except for during the car journeys (husband was driving) and I really got into Famous Last Words by Gillian McAllister. Has anyone read it? I've got about 10% left to read and can't wait to finish it. WFH today so hopeful that I can get a good shift in this morning with what I need to get done today and find some time over lunch to finish it. Work is such an inconvenience at times

I do find I need to have decided what book I'm reading next before finishing my current book otherwise I can find it harder to get going again.

Yeah the same. If it's just a random book I can go immediately to the next, usually get the next one opened on my kindle straight away, ready to start that same evening! (If I know what I fancy next!)

The ones that I have 'lived' inside, I have to sit with for a bit. Usually Google it, read an in depth analysis if there's one online, search it on Reddit and here, if there's a film I'll watch that.

I read The Long Walk on Friday night/Saturday, all in one go, and could have gone straight onto the next one as it's in a compilation, but I'm still thinking about my friends!! (Couldn't even pick up the paperback of Cheltenham Square Murder i also have on the go!)

I just pick up the next one and go.

I finished James by Pericival Everett yesterday for an online book club I’m in. I wasn’t going to read it but I am so glad I did as I really enjoyed it and read it in about 2 days.

I then picked up Ministry of Time as I’d gotten it from the library. I’m 140 pages in and feel like not a lot is really happening. There’s one or two interesting plot points I am waiting on answers to but not much else.

I’m wanting to rush through this so I can take both back to the library tomorrow. There’s a queue for Ministry of Time and I also want to collect my lost bookmark the librarian is kindly bringing over from the town branch.

I don’t necessarily need any time to process previous reads, but I do sometimes find it slow going to get into a new book too. My daily StoryGraph pages read graph has very clear dips when one book ends and another one finishes!

I don’t think that’s because my last book is still lingering with me, more that sometimes it takes a little while to find my feet in the world and characters of the new one.

i feel like i’ve written essays here about the ministry of time but can only say that i agree with your initial thoughts and it doesn’t really get better i found it a very rough read, and unbelievably overhyped.

finished the great believers yesterday and five stars no notes absolute heartbreak of a book. i have no clue what to read next to follow it.

Only because I usually finish a book late at night, I tend to not start the next one until I'm free which might be the next day or longer. If it's a weekend I might read the first pages/chapter of my next book straight after.

I mostly read on kindle these days so it's just a matter of browsing my downloads which makes it easier to move on to the next book.

It’s all the flowery ways she tries to say things (I should’ve written a couple down just now). I read a bit more in my lunchbreak just now and I’ve come to the conclusion that I like the expat characters. I don’t like the MC but I think because it’s written in first person so I think she’s an a.

same! i loved all the expats (especially the soldier, i forget his name 🥲) but she is the most boring main character ever. she doesn’t express any curiosity or real interest in anything and it drove me crazy - she’s so passive.

If I don’t have the next book lined up and perhaps a couple pages started as soon as the last book is done, I don’t always have the motivation to go back and read at the next opportunity.

Starting a new book is always the hardest thing for me. If I don't start it, I will procrastinate. Once I've started, it's easier for me to pick up again.

I LOVE this HM The Queen Investigates series. They are so good. And I just know the Queen would've loved this and the idea of her secretly solving crimes.

Anyone else really struggle when the characters in a book "banter"? Throws me straight out of my immersion. Usually it comes across as trying way too hard. Example the gentlemen guys series.
