I tend to round down. If I'm giving something a half star it's not good enough to make the next level up!This is similar to how I rate. I wish we could do half stars on Goodreads. I usually round up if I would give something .5 but I don’t round 4.5 up as to be a real 5* it has to be amazing

When it comes to half stars I look at the overall reviews and round up if I think they’re overly negative or down if they are too positive
I do this too! I'm also more likely to rate a book kindly if it's not got many reviews (or harshly if it has!)

I wish Goodreads did half stars too! I rarely rate a book less than 3, as it if was actually bad I proberly didn’t finish it! Although just had a look at my scores, I’ve scored a few ‘hyped up’ books as 2. I think I’m more likely to carry on if I know others have liked it thinking that it must improve!
For me; 2 - that wasn’t worth my time. 3 - decent. 4 - pretty good. 5 - really enjoyed and would recommend.

Bee Sting - has anyone read it?
Quite a few people here have read it. I'd say it's a marmite book. Personally I didn't enjoy it.
Was very meandering and frustrating. Lazy ending for me.
I devoured The Women by Kristin Hannah this weekend thanks to a couple of long journeys and a quiet Sunday evening. I adored it, I really loved the main character Frankie, and the relationships with other women. I didn't really know much about the Vietnam war, but I wasn't expecting the book to cover it in such graphic detail, it did make me squirm a bit but really added to the building of the story. I'd definitely say its not one for the more squeamish reader, but otherwise a tremendous book. 5*s.
I’ve read it. I thought it was great, but it definitely needed some stronger editing. I am irrationally annoyed by needlessly long books though.
I agree about the ending being lazy. I genuinely thought I’d missed something at the end and reread the final chapter to see what it was. Turned out that is just how it ended.

I try to leave a review but it’s for me rather than anyone else. I’ve sometimes looked back at my early Goodreads list of read books and can’t remember the book at all and wish I remembered why I gave it a low or high rating.Interesting to read everyone’s rating systems.

I’m not sure Goodreads is the right place though as sometimes I don’t want my reviews to be public when it’s just for me. Maybe I should keep a book journal.
I've stopped rating books.
I found I was putting more thought into the rating than reading the actual book my rating would change or something stupid would make me reconsider and I'd drop half a star etc.
If I LOVE it, I'll give it a 4 or 5, mainly to remember at the end of the year, but otherwise I'm just picking the one I enjoyed the most for my month wrap up on here.

My solution to the confusion of ratings is to just not rate my reads 
I basically ignore them when I am choosing books too.
I also normally only look up reviews if a book is really annoying me and I want validation that others agree.

Me too!! Straight to the 1 and 2 stars to see if other people agree with whatever I’m hating!
I’ve never really been a rater. Books that I’ve loved are the ones that will stick with me without having to look them up, same for ones I’ve really hated! And after hating several books that other people rate really highly (looking at you Crawdads and Normal People!) I’m always slightly cynical about basing my reading choices on what scores well on Goodreads.
Am I the only person who really doesn’t like the romance books with the really cartoony image pictures on the front ? I follow a few “booktokers” and even the ones who have really similar taste to me (contemporary and literary fiction generally) but who read broader genres like romance and romantasy, seem to love the types of cover that I see and immediately think that it will be crap.
I prefer it to ones with real people, because if I don't find the man on the cover attractive I can't get into the character

well I don’t like those either! The Emily Henry style covers are ok, I think I’m thinking of the Ali Hazlewood style ones ? So I know people love them books but they just put me right off. And the real people ones to me just look a bit… porn - Status
