@Caffeine Fiend I started reading Intermezzo and thought it was going to take an age to get through. In then came through on audio for me on Borrow Box and it’s been so much better. I think I need to stick to audio format for Sally Rooney’s books from now on tbh.

Yeah, not a great month by any means as the majority of the books weren't that great although I really enjoyed Bella's Christmas Bake Off and will certainly read it again next year. Although I give the Shipyard Girls a 7/10 I am currently reading the second book in the series but I am not enjoying it and although I planned to read the whole series for the first 6 months of 2025 I think I'm going to have to give it a miss as I don't want to read a series that I'm not going to enjoy. I will probably either go back to them at a later date or unhaul them all which I don't really want to do but if I don't enjoy them then I have no other choice.

What is your favourite fiction read of this year?
The Stranger in Her House - John Marrs. I read it on holiday and had to keep putting it down, walking away to decompress before going back to it. I can still remember the feelings of rage, fear and relief I felt while reading.
Honourable mention to 25 Days - Per Jacobson, not because of the actual book but because of the shared reading experience on here.
What is your favourite non fiction read of this year?
I’ve not read many non fictions this year, or at least not great ones any ways. Best of the bunch was probably Miranda Hart’s I Haven’t Been Entirely Honest With You. I love Miranda and felt really connected with her during the book as I too suffer with lots of chronic health issues.
What is your favourite audio book of this year?
Only listened to a couple of audio books this year as changed jobs and can’t manage to listen while working and I also stopped taking my son to multiple clubs where I could listen during his sessions. But I’d say my favourite was Miranda Hart’s. I was tempted to read the e-book but loved that I would be able to hear her voice so went for the audiobook.
What book/s surprised you good or bad? I.e did something not live up to your expectations or did any surpass any expectations you had for it?
Stolen Tongues by Felix Blackwell was billed to be an incredible horror but it was absolutely rubbish. Wish I hadn’t bothered!
I was recommended The Last Mrs Parrish multiple times before I actually gave in and read it. For some reason I didn’t think it would interest me at all but when I read it, I devoured it!! However, the sequel then totally let it down and was a waste of a read.
If you rate books what was your average rating and/or sum up your year of reading.
Goodreads tells me my average is 4.0. I haven’t read anywhere near as many books as previous years this year (67 this year, 124 last year!) and I feel like I’ve been more selective as a result.
Have you pre-ordered any books for 2025 yet / which books are you most looking forward to being released?
I don’t tend to pre-order books but I am looking forward to the next John Marrs and Lucinda Berry releases.
Do you have a list of books you are aiming to read next year or do you have any reading goals for the year ahead, this doesnt have to be quantity based or anything like that.
This year I totally took the pressure off myself to be constantly totting up book numbers or getting streaks on my Kindle and tried to relax into reading more. I think I want to continue the approach again next year as if I wanted a few nights off reading I didn’t feel guilty about it.
I’ve not been as good at DNFing books this year and need to return to it next year, I’ve wasted so much time on boring books (Such a Fun Age!!) and need to stop.
I think I’ll set a target of 52 again and hope for one read a week. I also want to find more time for audio books again, I’m just not sure when I’ll fit them in!

@Caffeine Fiend I read Say Nothing too and really enjoyed it. I don't have TV so had no idea about the show but I managed to watch it over Christmas and thought it was excellent.

IN MEMORIAM. destroyed me, i have thought of it constantly since. has entered the list of books where if someone brings it up in casual conversation i’ll kick a table over in my excitement to give a speech about it.
honourable mentions to shrines of gaiety, the will of the many, tom lake and beartown though.

sadly, funny story. emily henry and i have not been on a good run recently. faebound and the ministry of time both took really interesting ideas and somehow managed to make them extremely dull. long island also hugely surprised me in a bad way as a brooklyn fan
also disappointed with how much i didn’t like think again.
on the flip side, one dark window surprised me in a very positive way, as did good material. under your spell was also a joy in amongst some slightly average romances.

Chose two short books so I could finish the year on a neat 250
And I managed to read two books from my 24 for 2024 list amongst all the many festive books I got through! Undine Spragg is one of the best written characters I've read in a long time, but breathtakingly awful at the same time

isn’t she though?! i absolutely love edith wharton but undine is honestly her best(worst?) creation. i need to reread it!
I loved the last line about how she would have been perfectly happy if only she could be an ambassador's wife. So voracious.

happy place is (imo) her absolute worst book so i would say to give her another chance (even if i really haven’t enjoyed her last two books much!) i really liked both book lovers and beach read.
December turned out to be pretty busy work wise so I ended up tired and mindlessly scrolling or watching TV rather than reading in my free time. I also think Beartown broke my reading mojo a bit. I was planning on jumping straight into the next one but think I needed a bit of time to recover first. I’m going to get myself a kindle unlimited offer and intend to read loads off that over the next few months.

Every year I set a doable target of 50!
Last year I read 130 books, 125 of which I'd read by June. I tapered off the 2nd half of the year due to starting a new relationship.
This year has been a washout. Only 11 books read, and 7 of those were rereads! I'm actually ashamed 🫣
So tomorrow I'll set my usual target of 50 which I am determined to reach by this time next year

I’m finishing the year on 42 books which I’m happy with for just getting back into reading properly, plus I never read a thing until the middle of February when I got my kindle.
Going to set a target of 50 for 2025. Listened to a couple of biographies this month so that’s going to be my chosen way of reading those I think. Find it difficult to listen to an actual novel and follow along. Happy new year and hope you all have a good reading year in 2025

In 2023 I set a target of 50 and powered through it so I changed it to 100 and still went over. So I set 100 for 2024 and I am on 86. I will still set 100 for next year I think.
Interesting to hear someone else say this, I’ve had to accept that fiction on audio doesn’t work for me, only non-fiction does. No idea why
For me it’s trying to keep track of characters that I struggle with when listening. I treat a biography or a non fiction book like I’m listening to a podcast.
