I’m about 30% through - ‘You are here’ sucked me in! - but I’ll come back to your spoiler in a couple of days!I finished 'The Familiar' by Leigh Bardugo. Mixed feelings on it- I don't usually read historical fiction so it was a bit out of my comfort zone but I loved how she integrated the magical realism into the story, and her writing is always lovely to read. The pacing felt a little bit off- a bit of a lull in the middle for me, and then the last third picked right up again. Probably a 4* read all things considered.
The only thing I'd add is it took me a while to find Santangel a convincing love interest, because in my head I pictured him as quite ghost like and sickly!!
It's costing me so much to get into it. I'm about half way in and I don't even know if I'll continue. It helps to see you say it picks up in the last third.I finished 'The Familiar' by Leigh Bardugo. I liked HP and Funny Story but didn’t enjoy Book Lovers as much ( and YMOV/PWMOV is my least fav). Beach Read remains my fav EmHen. The deluxe copy coming out later this year looks so nice, I am very tempted!I think this was me
Im intrigued to see if I like Funny Story as I liked Happy Place when I didnt like Book Lovers.
I have YMOV on my kindle to read and Ive ordered a Deluxe copy of Beach Read. Is that every book shes written?
Im happy to go in open minded though![]()
I’ve been tempted to read The Familiar purely because of the cover - I love it so much. I also like Historical Fiction but haven’t read any Bardugo before. Think I might need to give it a try based on your review!I finished 'The Familiar' by Leigh Bardugo. And about your spoiler, yeah. I'm just like. Not convinced.
At her talk the other night she was saying the cover is from a painting from that era (with the scorpion added which is relevant to the book) My copy has black sprayed edges too it's soo pretty! how am i only now finding out there’s a sequel?! his writing is beautiful but i thought CMBYN was so purple prose in some places that it was hard to work out what was actually going on. i may give this a try though!I'm on to 'Find me' (the call me by your name sequel) now, his writing is so thoughtful and almost poetic in places. Sometimes it's a bit 'much' IYKWIM, I'm not a fan of literary fiction and I feel sometimes it's veering into it, but I'm enjoying it so far!
I've never heard the term 'purple prose' before but YES! This is exactly what I mean. I'm enjoying it so far though, hoping for a good endinghow am i only now finding out there’s a sequel?! his writing is beautiful but i thought CMBYN was so purple prose in some places that it was hard to work out what was actually going on. i may give this a try though!
Yes, I loved this book. Both of hers are really good and kept me gripped throughout.Has anyone read Drowning by TJ Newman? The premise of it (plane sinks to the bottom of the ocean with passengers onboard) sounds right up my street.
Its definitely not about romantic relationships which I thought was quite refreshingI'm also currently reading Tomorrow x 3. I don't usually like romance and I enjoy playing games but I'm not super into it. I'm only about a tenth of the way through but I think it's well written.
This is great to know, think I will buy it with my BP fuel rewardsYes, I loved this book. Both of hers are really good and kept me gripped throughout.
Just don't do what my mum did, and start it while sat on a plane!
false colours! an underrated heyer imo, it’s absolutely in my top five. it has one of her loveliest male leads. My April Reads. 4 five stars given for Georgette Heyer and Beth O'Leary books. I'm a terrific fan of these authors.
The Agatha Raisin detective books were the low scorers as I just couldn't get into them - I was bored.
Also found myself shocked yet againto have downloaded an e book and then found I had a purchased unread copy already in my bookcase.

Oh noI'm saddened to hear that the great C.J. Sansom has died. His Shardlake novels are by far my favourite historical mystery series. The TV adaptation of Dissolution is due to start on Disney+ this week as well![]()
I was hovering on giving it a fiver but I'm trying to be a ruthless reviewer!false colours! an underrated heyer imo, it’s absolutely in my top five. it has one of her loveliest male leads.
