Hello! Really trying to read more these days - used to be a voracious reader, then had a child and I died of tiredness. I am reading again though, slowly but surely. I’m just about to start The Whalebone Theatre.

I usually enjoy contemporary literary fiction type books, often disappointed by (not on purpose promise) anything that ends up being massively overhyped, also as a throwback to my English Lit degrees enjoy some classics, Dickens, and have a penchant for medieval poetry though I admit that is not top of my current reading list.

My husband is a science fiction fan and I had never read anything in that genre before but I’m 3 books into “The Expanse” series of books (if anyone is familiar with the TV series) and I’m really enjoying them. They’re really character driven and it’s like just a coincidence it’s set in space.

I've been working my way through the Eddie Flynn series by Steve Cavanagh, just finished The Devil's Advocate. And if you like intense, thrillery, stuff. Con artist turned unconventional lawyer then these are brilliant. They are just full on action packed from start to finish. Just so intense. So well written. Just such a fantastic series, easy to read, but enjoyable, memorable, page turners.

I'm on my 4th book for this month already and part of me want to do a 30 books in 30 days kind of challenge it's a terrible idea but also sounds kinda fun?

Edit: I'm a Gryffindor and I used to have a crush on Snape growing up (it's better than Dobby but still, clearly needed therapy )

I do think Kristin Hannah could be an airport author. Not a diss, but she does write very readable fiction. Not quite literary but not fully commercial, and her books have been part of Celebrity Bookclubs so they do often get carried by airport bookstores like Hudson in the US.

ETA: I think the term is meant as a diss because society often undervalues what women like, but it's hard work to write something that's compulsively readable.

I have had another slow week but I am over halfway through the ACOTAR and ... I GET IT! I GET THE HYPE. I haven't really read fantasy before but now I am really enjoying the faerie stuff. I'll be honest, I bought just the first book on Kindle because I thought I'd give the first one a try before buying the series and I kind of hoped I wouldn't like it that much so I wouldn't be overwhelmed with reading / buying the rest... but damnit I think I am going to have to at least read the next one and then buy the rest I have a problem, when I really enjoy a book and find out it's part of a series I get a bit obsessed with buying the rest so I don't miss out I don't have the physical space for all of them in paperback so I think I will continue with this series on Kindle.

Please not spoilers yet for the first book, I'm hoping to finish it today but I was reading it last night and didn't go to sleep until 1.30am. I love my sleep so if I stay up it means the book is good.

The other book I am reading slowly this week is Hercule Poirot Silent Night (by Sophie Hannah). It's....okay but it's not Agatha's, it's the intellectual property licensed for more stories by the Agatha Christie estate I suppose. Knowing that, it feels like it's not the same so I'm not sure I will pick up any more of the Sophie Hannah Poirot books. I've read enough of the book that I want to finish it now but it is slow going. I picked it up in the supermarket over Christmas and it's probably one of those trolley-dash purchases I made in haste.

Imagine the shame as a book lover of having to email the library to say my son has lost his books. I’m actually livid at him. How do you lose books? My house is upside down looking for them. the library are going to hate me

Hope you find them. I had to tell the library that my dog ate a chunk out of a book. I went in person to confess to my crime. They just responded with 'ooh you have a puppy.' I had been stressed out, especially as it was the 'mean' man who always looked like he'd charge me late fees even though the library doesn't charge them

I found a library book on a bookshelf at home recently.I swore I had never seen it before and brought it back to the library. They informed me that not only had I checked it out a few years ago, I had also reported it missing and had paid for it. I clearly live my life in a fugue-like state as I have no recollection of either.

I've been reading ONE book throughout March and I'm still only halfway through. It's dragging and boring and I don't like it but I'm too stubborn to DNF.

I know a lot of you loved it so I'M SORRY OKAY?? It's The Things We Leave Unfinished by Rebecca Yarros. Anyone else read this and feel highly underwhelmed???!

Started Open Water by Caleb Azumah Nelson the other day and enjoying it. Also early on into I Have Some Questions for You by Rebecca Makkai which is gripping.

I started reading the ACOTAR series, it was my first time reading fantasy & I was fully influenced to read it by booktok, but i DNF 1/4 way through A court of mist & fury (second book) I just felt SO bred reading it. I needed to read something fast paced straight after to avoid going it a reading slump so i read Then she was gone by Lisa Jwell & loved it but now I'm sure whether or not to give ACOTAR another go or I'd be just reading for the sake?

Also please no hate as i know most people LOVE ACOTAR I just don't think the fantasy Genre is for me

I'm sure I've spouted my little motto here before, but life is too short to read books you don't enjoy! Especially if like me you have a looooong tbr and a few too many unread books in your possession

I'm reading Happy Place by Emily Henry and it's sooo much better than Book Lovers (which I didn't finish). Still wouldn't say it's a must read but it's a fun enough read and I'm invested in finding out what happens, would be a good one to take on holiday.

I want to read Magnolia Parks I've heard such good things! My library doesn't have it so was looking to buy it but the cheaper covers are so ugly compared to the original ones I know it doesn't reallllly matter and I'm being a book cover snob but the OG ones really are so much nicer.

finally read remarkably bright creatures. what a wholesome book 🥹 marcellus is definitely a character that will stick with me although I do wish there were more chapters from his perspective!

As I tend to veer towards thrillers, I definitely need a book to hook me in quickly - I hate slow burners, life is too short for them! I tend to give a book to about 20/25% and if I just don’t care about the characters or the plot then I’ll move on. I always think if the author hasn’t given me something to care about when I’m a quarter of the way through the book then they probably aren’t going to. I’m all for setting the scene but it shouldn’t take 25% plus to do it.

One of my pet peeves with books though is ones that hook you in immediately with an amazing prologue or first few chapters that you just can’t put down but then the author can’t sustain that level of grab and the book turns boring. So frustrating!

Weirdly, I felt like I hadn't had a good reading month until I did this. I didn't enjoy Katherine as much as I'd hoped, but at least it was one off my 24 for 24, and I had a great time with some of the others.
