Colleagues that are up the bosses arse being helpful, laughing and joking with them then do nothing but bad mouth them behind their back :cautious: fake fuckers

When someone cancels a 30 minute meeting, so you have a brief feeling of relief, only for someone else to then book an hour meeting in the same slot.

Tempted to just decline it!

Sorry I'm on a roll today... but another one that happened earlier was I thought a meeting was coming to a close early but it actually turned out it was just the end of the first person who wanted to present. Yay another 30 minutes of useless drivel that no one cares about. 🤣

Colleagues who conduct long and LOUD telephone calls in and pen plan office - especially when it’s relatively quiet and everyone’s clearly trying to concentrate. Nobody wants to hear your hour-long, one-sided conversation, go and find a meeting room and let everyone else get on!

I meant ‘open plan’ … bloomin’ autocorrect!

When people join the company and are so set on getting ahead straightaway. I don’t begrudge their ambition but it’s usually the ones with serious flaws in their character who do this.

I completely agree with this one. Just take your time to settle in, get to know people and the way the company works, before trying to make your mark.

The company I've been contracting at have hired a new Sales Manager a week ago and on his first day told his team that there will be changes, along with a lot of tears. What was he hoping to achieve by saying such a thing? He's not winning anyone over, that's for sure - even the General Manager (who kept telling anyone who would listen how great his reputation is) isn't his usual cheery self and has been holding a lot of one-to-one meetings with the sales staff. This isn't the most friendly workplace anyway, and this move sure doesn't help.

Sounds like an absolute knob! Why do some people take such delight in being abrasive? 😡

I cannot stand people who treat the workplace like they Alan Sugar leading an episode of The Apprentice. In fact I can’t stand that show, because you get so many people now who either treat work like they’re a contestant and everything’s a task they have to win, or you get managers who genuinely think that being an abrasive hole is actually a way to lead a team.

I would appreciate some perspective.

I posted about how I joined a new team a few months ago. A few days ago, I was asked to do a presentation in front of 70 people. My manager knows I’d never done this and public speaking terrifies me. Fast forward, I do the presentation and the manager wasn’t in attendance.

All good. People apparently loved it. At around 5.30pm when I’m about to log off, I get a ping from my manager asking me to talk. I dial in and they go on a tangent about how some people did not like that I didn’t have my camera on! They said it wasn’t good, that I should have had my camera on and the team culture is one of collaboration.

I explained that my camera was on and if it appeared off when I shared my screen, I apologize but I’m pretty adamant I had it on. Then she goes on a tangent saying she doesn’t want an apology and that she wants to know why my camera is occasionally off (during weekly team meetings with roughly 100 people on and where I’m not a speaker!) I said it’s for personal reasons and I shouldn’t give such justification. Then she goes on a tangent about how she’s not asking for justification. What? You just asked me ‘why’.

Anyways, I apologize, say it was an oversight (even though I 100% had my camera on and maybe turned it off for a second to drink water) and she kept going on a tangent.

At that point, I had enough and I started crying which she quickly gathered and she says ‘this is not a formal reprimand that will go in your performance record, if that’s what you think’ . I go silent because my anxiety went through the roof and she ends the call.

Fast forward, the following day, I log in, no trace of her asking me even as much as an ‘are you OK’. Nothing. I got an email asking for a deck, nothing else.

I was honestly so happy with my presentation and some people even asked me to join their project with leadership as a result of it. She tore it all apart right after. I’ve been feeling distraught ever since because I’ve been in the industry for 8 years, had disagreements with managers, but never cried in front of one and this one pushed me to tears over something so petty.

I‘m genuinely contemplating resigning next week without any other job lined up because I’ve never seen this my entire career and God knows my previous team was awful.

Hey, im sorry you've had to deal with such a difficult person 😔

Don't worry about crying it is a normal human response to being distressed! I'm not normally one to throw around the jealous card but is there any way she could feel threatened by the great job you did with the presentation?

Thank you.

She always talks about how great of a manager and leader she is. She’s quite young for the level she’s in, so she shouldn’t feel threatened. She seems overly confident to me if anything.

That said, without even doing anything special and by just being me and trying to do the job, I’ve been gaining a bit of momentum/attention across the network since I joined the team. Maybe she had enough.

I really feel that based on your posts the company you are in isn’t for you. We spend too much of our life at work to be as miserable as you are feeling there; IIRC you have had a difficult personal time as well not so long ago. In the same situation, I’d probably resign also, take some breathing space for a couple of weeks (hopefully with the sun shining) and start fresh elsewhere.

Honestly - this sounds like jealousy. I obviously don’t know your irl situation or what’s been going on beforehand, but if a colleague came to me with this then I’d say that it sounds to me like she heard you get some praise, it unsettled her and she decided to pull you down a peg or two, irrespective of whether that was actually what you needed. It smacks of someone using the guise of being helpful and managing you to actually be a bit of a bully. If you can look at the situation and honestly say you did ok, then can you also look at it and recognise how it might make someone who is insecure a bit jealous?

You seem to have had a lot of problems with this company so I wonder if it’s really the right place for you? It seems like quite a toxic environment, and it’s probably not doing you much good being there.

Jealousy was what crossed my mind too, tbh. Why would someone's automatic reaction be - on hearing that a team member had done well - to try to tear them down on an unimportant issue? I would dearly love to know who supposedly complained about it. I'm guessing, nobody.

It sounds like she wanted to get at you, imo. Going on to start needling about a camera being off during team meetings, why did she not say that to you previously, or indeed issue a general reminder if it's that important.

I wouldn't resign, if I were you. I would, however, start to look around and see what other jobs are out there. Now it's the weekend, promise yourself to switch off and relax. Treat yourself to something nice, even if it's just a takeaway coffee or getting your nails done or whatever. Don't worry about the crying. You were probably on a bit of a high having taken on and conquered something you were dreading and then Nitpicking Nellie just had to deflate you. It reflects on her, not you.

What a cow. I’d say you smashed it and she’s jealous that it went well. Sorry they treated you like this

The bad side of me would be tempted to ask her who complained so that you could personally apologise to them for the fact that they thought your camera was off.

However I wouldnt recommend doing that, 😁!

I’m probably projecting but it reminds me of a manager I once had. Massively insecure, and a specialist in those ‘doorknob’ conversations that were designed to leave you feeling upset and unsettled just before the weekend or just before you went on leave. You’d spend your time off fretting only to come back and it was like it never happened. Horrible.

Thank you so much for the kind words & support. I really don’t have anyone to talk to about this, so it means a lot ❤

Honestly, how many times did I attend a presentation and couldn’t even recollect the face afterwards of the presenter because the focus is on the presentation, not the speaker.

It’s really sad because I’m always going to link this huge personal milestone with her drama.

I agree that I’ve had my fair share of grief with this company. Changing teams just
caused me to go from one issue to another. I’m not interested in this company anymore.
