Where I live in a small town in Scotland we are welcoming 10 families from Afghanistan and I really hope they feel welcomed and settle here❤
this is the thing, there are SO many small towns in the UK ( and across Europe- remember all of those Itlaina villages selling houses for 1 euro?) that really need people , can we not manage this better?

so a much poorer country than us is helping

Not a joke, a lot of those types of planes are leaving at this sort of capacity. I’m not sure it’s anyone’s fault on the ground but the Taliban who keep blocking the entrance to the airport?
Glad his wife has been able to get out, I do wonder what about him.

In the UK do they have government "classes" about the culture etc? I know here in Canada those are offered to immigrants.
As well as English lessons at the library, a "friend" class at the library, and sometimes local families can sponsor refugees and "look after" them for the first year.
I think they offer free English lessons and I remember reading something about offering free help to gain GCSE qualifications but I believe it’s pot luck depending on where you live and the infrastructure of the local councils.

That is fine, however according to UNHCR statistics, at the end of 2020 there were:

132,349  refugees
77,245 pending asylum cases
4662  stateless persons

= 214,256 people at the end of 2020.

In the UK, The numbers continue to increase on a daily basis.

If the one million people illegally here were removed, then there would be more resources to help those genuinely in need.
Makes me question what Priti Patel is doing to stop illegal crossings via the channel? She’s made a big song and dance about it as has the government but thousands still keep coming and their success is going to encourage others to take part in the very dangerous act of crossing the channel in a tiny, overloaded boat and using people smugglers.

There seems to be a few countries that cannot get their planes in or are struggling in some sort of ways, so you’d think there would be some cooperation to try and make everything a bit quicker and easier for people who are stuck there, and easier for the Taliban too I guess

The Guardian has an article on Taliban blocking Australian citizens from entering the airport though. Sounds very concerning

Pen has said he would stay until his employees are out safely and they still seem to be keen on getting as many animals as they can out. Though I do wonder at what point he will simply leave as it sadly seems unlikely that it will happen as he’d like

Please, if you do nothing else today, watch & listen to Pen out in Kabul who will tell you The Truth about what's going on instead of some filtered newsworthy piece. Whilst he has the funds to get his staff and animals out they cannot even get to the airport to do so now because its that bad there :(

PLEASE everyone its time to force our govts to act on this situation and sort out the mess they left behind them because they are ALL responsible both Johnson, Biden & Macron - the whole bloody lot! - now they need to sort it out! Email them, flood them with emails, crash their systems to show them that we ordinary people have had enough of their tit and its time to make good on empty promises, especially you Veterans who saw friends and colleagues die out there in service to only witness this handing everything over to the enemy gift-wrapped with a pretty bow on top; Enough is enough :(

Yes. I don't think the local families sponsor thing happens but the other stuff you mentioned does.
I've recently moved house but my old neighbours were Syrian refugees. Lovely family. Our local council visited 3x a week, they were all given English lessons, the kids go to the local school, the father is learning to drive etc

I think the British support system is so completely unstable that it creates a fissure of those pro-refugee and against-refugee. And it’s not anyone’s fault other than the government. There’s so many people below the poverty line, homeless or needing help in other ways and they just don’t get the suppport they need and are the ones that suffer when benefits are cut. Then on the other hand you have those playing the system who are perfectly able to work and provide for themselves but don’t because they receive more in benefits than earning a wage and having to pay for childcare. Unfortunately whether we take on refugees or not, that problem isn’t going to be solved.

But what I’d like to think, even if it’s naive to do so, is that there are plenty of refugees out there who can or will be able to do something positive in whichever society they move to. But that can only happen if they have support and acceptance. Rejected and unsupported people are more likely to not integrate, turn to crime and are more likely to be radicalised. And I don’t just mean financial support- having someone there to guide them and be a friendly face. I’d like to think that if ever I was in a situation where the country was war torn/ unsafe, someone would see that potential to do good in me.

Besides, what are we going to do if/when aliens visit earth. Be like “sorry mr alien, you’re an illegal so you can’t come here- go back to your spaceship” it just seems silly in a way that every country has a boundary for entry but we all live on the same planet.

The German empty plane I believe is because so many countries are trying to get so many planes in and out making it a logistical nightmare. So they have a limited time to land and pick up people ready and it's not feasible to wait for every single seat to be filled and hold up other planes circling above. But yeah especially for a country like Germany you'd think there would be more cooperation with nearby countries.

If this has proven anything, it’s that people escaping truly dangerous situations don’t come to the UK by the book. How can you get a government-certified flight when the government itself has fled from a radical terrorist group? Would you flee the country by your own means or cling to the hangar of an overcrowded plane?

Especially in countries where there is continuous unrest, some people can never obtain proper ID and papers. I have had my driver’s licence turned down at American airports as proof of ID - they only want passports. The main form of official Afghan ID currently can only be obtained at age 18 and with the production of the old Afghan ID papers - if you don’t have these, your family have to come to testify in your favour at the application. How many people have turned 18 in the last few weeks, how many will turn 18 in a few days? these people will have not had a chance to obtain ID, and there will be over a million of them alone. People will be losing their IDs amid the chaos.

It will be much easier for men to flee so yes there will be more male refugees. It’s not indicative of heartlessness - many mothers would say to their sons to leave them behind if they had to.

I wish people would put themselves in the refugees’ shoes, just think about what you would do at every stage in their position.

Or was it a German plane for Norwegian citizens?

I was listening to a discussion on the radio and one advocate was saying refugees coming to the UK need mental health treatment once here 🤐
Erm there's a mental health crisis and a severe lack of resources for the population already which has been exacerbated even more with the effect of lockdowns.
Quite rightly many British people see people they know not getting the help they need, waiting years for housing, using food banks, isolating and of course the many homeless which has been a problem since the end of WW2! that's nearly 75 yrs! and someone who has never contributed anything to the UK gets brought over and is given everything.
It has a knock on effect such as more unwanted green impositions all because there are too many people.

Has Joe overslept again? Late for his latest conference.

It would be hard to be more incompetent than he did on the last two, but not doubting he'll lower the bar again!

214256 divided by 67.1 million (uk population) = 0.003193%

You left out the bit about what these numbers mean in relation to the uk.

Think this might help with perspective

Taliban carrying out house-to-house searches now, seems a list has been compiled of people they are after (UN leaked this), a German journalist for Deutsch Weil escaped, 9 men tortured & then executed, reported on the BBC news earlier.

There was a clip of them all dressed in white with faces marching down the road which looked pretty sinister. I think they're gearing up for some brutal rule.

What some also need to grasp is that the UK cannot house and resettle all the world's 'hard done by'. There is a limit to how many can be taken, for which successive Governments and bleeding hard leftists don't seem to understand.

Many would likely be more sympathetic to taking 20,000 (vetted) Afghans in, if it wasn't for the fact that hundreds already illegally enter the country on a weekly basis via the south coast. With estimates predicting well over 20k doing so by the end of 2021. It is estimated that over 1 million illegals now reside in the UK, plus a couple of hundred thousand refugees and Asylum Seekers on top.
Wheres the stats on 'over a million illegals'?

214256 is the number of refugees and aslyum seekers and statless persons living in the uk, divided that by 67.1 million (uk population) = 0.003193% of the UK population.

Hardly saturation

In 2019, there were just over 35000 applications for refuge made.

We arent 'taking everyone'. We take fewer people than other countries in Europe such as Germany and France. And if you look at how many people we take in relation to our overall population figures then I think we rank around 17th globally

I have the avoid that picture, literally makes me cry when I see it, i just imagine thay being my kid.

Anyone saying this country can’t afford to help these people are coming from a place of privilege and I truly hope they never have to suffer 1/10th of what these people are going through.

its not immigrants fault for lack of resources in this country, its the people who are running it! They have enough money and resources to line their own pockets, its disgusting.

It was depressing to read about that 5 year old who died after falling from the hotel in Sheffield. They were a family from Afghanistan who had recently arrived. That really is sad.
