I’ve been watching The Seasonal Homestead (because I am really bored when there is nothing to do in my garden). The woman (also called Becky) is big into gardening and being self-sufficient. Apparently, they’re very religious and into homeschooling, but it’s not really a major focus on the channel. Fair play to them for getting their kids so involved - at that age, I’d not have been too chuffed about working in the garden all the time! And her husband’s flat out, isn’t he? Doing so much work on the homestead while still holding down a regular job. I’d say it’s not as picture-perfect in real life as it looks on YouTube, but sure, the videos are a nice watch.
She has opened the new gardening season - dispassionately throwing seeds into the pots of soil. Apparently she's trying to put in even less effort than last year. Or as she calls it, she wants to have a lot of fun in the garden with her family.
I really don't think she is enjoying the gardening, she only likes the harvesting.
I would recommend dedicating a few beds to perennial flowers and perennial vegetables like asparagus or make one bed acidic and grow cranberries.
Her goals for her garden were … she hasn’t got any goals. Nobody sees your family enjoying the garden Becky. You got that massive professionally landscaped garden by your loyal followers religiously watching your videos. Why is she repeating massive beds of snap dragons? I mean I know she likes them I like them but it’s boring!! Sometimes I feel she takes her massive following for granted and doesn’t put the effort into creating new and interesting content. Mix it up a bit Becky. I also think her content suffered in January and February because she didn’t do the pantry challenge. Cooking for parties and lots of dishes that she has to give away is not the one for me. I’m also finding the obsession with fresh milled flour boring. I like the use what we have meals not buying loads of unnecessary groceries. It’s some of her best content. I do like that she keeps in her fails!! When she dropped her cinnamon rolls on the floor and smashed her dish. I’d have cried!!
It seems to me that more and more acreage is being devoted to annual flowers because it is easy to fill the beds with them and create the appearance of diversity and productivity. But the sheer overproduction of flowers last year was disgusting. It was far more than she could use, planted at too close a distance and therefore quickly affected by mildew and not really nice to look at and in combination with the vegetables it was also disadvantageous because the tall flowers shaded the young vegetable plants even though they needed more sun.
If she were passionate about gardening, she would have adjusted the irrigation system long ago. Every gardening video started with her talking about how many days she hadn't been in the garden. Only to randomly scatter seeds all over the place that never had a realistic chance of becoming anything.
Harvesting was also too difficult for her and her parents had to come back to do it. I don't understand why she harvested most of the tomatoes unripe and left a bunch of them to ripen in the house. She has repeatedly trampled over the beans that she had stored on the floor in the basement for months.
Her recipes are basically always the same - the amount of salt she uses is already dangerous to health.
I'm curious to see whether she'll improve anything with the irrigation this year, what she'll come up with for the new chicken coop and whether the bees will survive the season.
And hopefully we won't see too much of the green monstrosities in which the strawberries vegetate

You're definitely right. I would have cried too.
I also didn’t agree with her about grow lights. She said if you don’t have grow lights nothing will grow. That is categorically not true. I have not got grow lights. My seeds germinate just as well as hers and mine are planted and left to germinate on window sills and in my conservatory. It’s not a big conservatory and is also my husbands office. Last year my tomato seedlings were more advanced and healthier than hers! The weather in the uk is very similar to where she lives. We have a good deal of rain . Maybe not the same snow but Spring comes about the same time.

I have learned a bit or two from her, although I have to admit the scale of gardening that she does is not very relatable to me (I started watching our Becky because her garden, especially her old one, was close to what I am working with). How her husband still has the energy and motivation to do all those DIY projects on top of working full time is a mystery to me. I've been nagging Mr. Aulty for 2 months now to drill a couple of holes for my watering stystem ...

In the last live, Josh answered this question - the bees have rehomed themselves, he has to buy new ones.
Becky admitted that she doesn't check on the chickens every day when they aren't laying eggs because their feeder and water dispensers are big enough for several days. Maybe I'm a little too anxious about this, but who doesn't check at least once a day whether their animals are okay?
I personally thought bees were a bit of a risk especially with young children. They seemed very close to the house. Another you tuber I watch had bees and was experienced with them. She got attacked and stung hundreds of times. She was hospitalised. Imagine if that happened to a child.
I didn't even assume that they want to invest their own money there. They might be lucky with the chicken coop, but it will be difficult to find a sponsor for a high-quality and attractive green house.
Hello, I found my people who discuss Acre Homestead! I have to say I am so sick of hearing about fresh-milled flour and organic, grass fed, grass finished meat.
I respect that she includes no content about her child. Her fans are so weird when they keep asking questions when Becky made it clear she wasn't going to share anything.

Yes there was one woman asking could she do a day in her life with on how your organises her day around working and motherhood. No the channels not about that. There was also some weirdo who called Becky this sweet child. She’s not a child she’s an adult. Maybe it’s like a language thing between the uk and America but in the UK we don’t patronise grown women like this. Lots of her followers are a bit evangelical about her. How marvellous she is how self sacrificing. She’s just a woman who cooks and gardens on the internet and makes a very healthy living. She hasn’t found the cure to cancer nor does she care for abandoned children!!!
It's crazy how these super fans believe that the vlogs show real life. Basically, most YouTubers are nothing more than self-promoters in scripted reality shows. Becky has found her niche (good for her) and she is moving in it. Even if she sells a lot of things to the audience as if she were stepping out of her comfort zone, it's basically always about the same topics.
And it gets really annoying when her camera-hungry mother comes along with her strange lists and schedules.
I don't want to see any more of her family life, her simpleton husband is enough. The speed at which he renovated the upper floor (and it's still not finished) would have driven me crazy.
And I'm sure Becky has at least a nanny (maybe even a home help) because Josh certainly isn't looking after a toddler while she's filming. So she won't give a real insight into her everyday life because that would damage the image she has created of the hard-working housewife, mother and homestead saint.
I don't envy her success, it's a business that pays her bills and entertains the audience.

I don’t think he did the renovation. They had people in in the end.It’s taken him since they moved there 2 years ago to finish the trims. I also think it’s eerily quiet when she films for a family whose toddler is there when she films. He definitely goes to an outside day care provider when she films. Nobody cares Becky when you have kids and continue to work you need help with day care. I also don’t think she took to motherhood the way she thought she would. It’s just a feeling I get. I wonder if they’ll have more kids?
Do they even have space for a second children's room? Each of them needs their own office, a room for the drums, lots of storage space for whatever.
I mean that part of the house they’ve done up is like a whole second wing !!
