I go to the Oxford college Jade applied to (not in her year and different course) but obviously have heard some things that think are quite telling (not necessarily her fault but make a whole lot of sense).
Firstly, she applied for deferred entry (so missing a year). I get she wanted to do a gap year but applying deferred drastically reduces your chances - to put it in perspective for my course ~10 people are admitted per year in the college, we were told that to get an offer you would obviously need to be in the top 10 of the 30 or so at interviews. But if you were applying deferred they would likely only give you an offer if you are in the top 3/4 - as it would be unfair on next years cohort if multiple places were already taken up. Combined with the fact that the college has the highest applications of any other oxford college - applying deferred and assuming you’ll get in is pretty arrogant.
Also, if you watch her interview vlog, she goes on about how nice her room is. A friend of mine was given the same room during interviews and told by someone showing her around that it was the ‘best room’ (which it is) and specifically mentioned how they gave it intentionally to Jade. That type of stuff is controlled by the JCR committee (basically student council) so evidently had no bearing on whether or not she got in, but of course people knew who she was and I guess meant she had a lovely interview experience.
I find it hard to believe that she didn’t notice this when she was there (the ‘famous’ girl getting the room with its own living room and en-suite when some people were stuck in a block literally known as ‘the bunker’) so really makes sense why she was so hit by the rejection. I think it was a complete curve ball as she more than assumed she’d get in.
