Wisdom teeth...the devil

Does anyone know how come some dentists charge ( my dentist quoted £495 yesterday) for wisdom tooth removal, and sometimes it’s free?
Sounds like you’re private? I’m with an NHS dentist and it would come under band 2 and be £62.

Private dentists do charge a lot which is why they encourage you to pay for dental plans.

I wouldn’t pay that price. I would try and find an NHS dentist.

I'm in NZ, so things will be a bit different ...

Around 1998-ish, I started having terrible dental pain; in visiting the dentist he told me my wisdom teeth had come down on my right side and had to be removed, which he could do. His price was NZ$400 vs that of an Orthodontist or Oral Surgeon which, according to the Dentist, would have been in the thousands (although I had health insurance, it didn't stretch to dental cover). Being young and inexperienced about this sort of thing, I didn't even think to get a second opinion.

So an appointment was made and he did the extraction - four teeth - on a Friday afternoon. All up, it took just over three hours and I have never been in so much pain. The left side of my face was so bloody and swollen and bruising soon developed. I was in sheer agony for a good week - I had to call in sick to work as I couldn't even get up in the morning and went through so many over-the-counter painkillers it wasn't funny. I really wished I'd just borrowed the money to get better care.

In 2010, my left side needed doing; this time, I went to an Orthodontist who worked within a dental practice; because of the set-up, she worked alongside a dentist who performed most of the operation, which kept the cost down. All up, for extracting five wisdom teeth (most people only have four), it came to just under NZ$1,000. I was a bit sore, but prescribed painkillers and able to return to work the next day as if nothing had happened.

In 2018, a new wisdom tooth came down on my right side - totally unexpected and a bit worrisome - so I had a regular dentist extract that one to the tune of NZ$250 (the pricing has been inconsistent throughout). No issues with that one either.

Fast forward to 2017, and I had to have a couple of teeth extracted which had died. A year or so later, I could feel a strange sensation in the gaps; it turned out that new wisdom teeth had grown into their spaces - one on each side! This was just so strange but it is possible as the originally removed wisdom teeth were in different spaces to where the new ones popped up. Today, those wisdom teeth feel just like the teeth they replaced.

That's my wisdom teeth story!

Im an NHS patient for other stuff though. I’m going to query that I think.

That does sound private. I’m not sure if Wales is different but here they don’t routinely remove wisdom teeth unless you’re getting recurrent infections. I was added to the waiting list and was told it would be around 18 months to get them removed. I believe it would have been free or possibly I’d have to pay but definitely not that much!

Yes definitely query it but I know private prices are ridiculous. Even a check up is about £60!

I had a wisdom tooth out on NHS about 3 years ago and it was Band 2 which was £55/57 at the time but it goes up each April.

I paid £200 for a private dentist although I’m an nhs patient there. Initially they referred me to hospital and it would have been free but my appointment kept getting cancelled due to covid. In the end they agreed to do it for £200 which I didn’t think was too bad (tbh I would have wiped out my bank account to have it out, was in so much pain!) I had another one taken out about 5 years ago by an nhs dentist and that just came under band 2 which was around £50.

Does anyone have any tips to help with wisdom tooth pain? I’m ready for the clinic 🤯

ETA: my dentist done X-rays and said they are coming up fine it’s just that they are taking ages and seem to do it in painful spurts 😔

Mine did this too, every few months they’d come out a bit more. What helped me was

- Rinse your mouth with salt water
- crushed paracetamol with a bit of water, then paste that on the area to sink in
- bonjela! Was my saving grace

I had a wisdom tooth out on Monday after spending the whole weekend beforehand in agony. I had no idea what tooth was causing the pain, one side of my mouth was just killing me for two days straight.

I’ve never had any bother with my wisdom teeth before this, I wasn’t even sure that I had any.

Ok, I need some advice and hopefully some positive stories! Had my dental check up this week and they did routine xrays which have shown that I need a upper right wisdom tooth removing. It has been bothering me on and off for a while but I assumed it was just coming through, they've shown me that its growing to the side and is putting pressure on the teeth next to it and they recommend extraction.
I'm at a private dentist so the cost is high, £280 to be exact. I am hoping for that price it's going to be as painless as possible. I'm terrified of having a tooth removed, its always been a fear and I would rather go through labour again!
Please give me your stories to help my fear! I haven't even booked the appointment yet as I can't bring myself to. I've had three root fillings, and the pain before each one was horrific - abscesses and infections which apparently went to the bone. I'm thinking if I can manage that, surely it cannot be too bad?!
Its the post extraction that worries me, the dry socket sounds hell.

Firstly if it’s an upper tooth there is less chance of dry socket and it’s really unlikely as long as you follow the instructions to not use straws (the sucking can dislodge the clot) and things like just tipping salt water around your mouth rather than how you would mouth wash.

if had a couple out the top was easier and I just felt a bit of pressure and they pulled it straight out and it was done in minutes. So don’t worry and don’t read the horror stories, it’s a slim chance of happening

I was just careful for a couple of days and chewed on the other side of my mouth and ate soft food, but they’ll send you home with painkillers, but I personally had no pain, if anything it was a relief to have it out.

I had a lower one taken out (which are supposed to be worse than upper). Honestly it’s not that bad, not just saying this to make you feel better. The most painful part of the extraction was the needle to numb the area. Not horrendously painful or anything, just unpleasant. If you don’t like needles, ask them to warn you before they get it out cos the needle is a lot longer than a regular one. That way you can close your eyes. The extraction doesn’t hurt with the anaesthetic, just feels like pressure on your cheek. Use your finger now to press as hard as you can on your cheek where your tooth is (maybe best to do it on a tooth that doesn’t hurt)! That’s how the pressure feels.

I did get a dry socket and yep it was painful especially when the air hit it because the nerve was exposed. But honestly after a few days I just went back and they packed in this AMAZING stuff that tastes like cloves and it was the most instant pain relief ever. What you described with the abscess sounds a million times worse than the dry socket.

You’ll be fine 💙 just do plenty of salt water gargling and have a box of ibuprofen ready. It was all worth it for not having that tooth paining me every few months.

Thank you both!!! Really helpful. The root fillings I've had were 1hour 30 minutes so I'm trying to make myself think it cannot be longer or worse than that.

I don't mind a bit of a pain afterwards, I just am worried about the dry socket and the actual thought of it being pulled.

Did either of you ladies get a bruised face or swelling?

oh noo definitely not 1h 30, it was prob only 10 mins. No bruised face for me, did get a bit of swelling but nothing major.
Im actually kind of jealous you’re getting your upper taken out 😅 mine grew sideways too but since my bottom was taken out they’ve been turning around because they know there’s space for them to sit correctly now (so weird!).
Good luck and let us know how you get on!

I had my two lower ones taken out and honestly, it was ok. I made the mistake of smoking though and ended up with an infection and THAT was horrible. So, dont worry. Stick to the aftercare guidance and you'll be ok

I had to be refereed to dental hospitals as it was impacted and coming in sideways
I had sticthes because they had to cut the gum and take the tooth out in pieces , so I had no risk of fry socket as they stitched over it
