Wisdom teeth...the devil

That’s such a long time! I was referred nov 2017 and had it done feb 2018. Would have been jan but couldn’t make the original date (they rang me last minute with a cancellation so I couldn’t do that one) I went to hospital to get it done though.
I mean to be fair this is just what other people have told me and people love to exaggerate, I’m hoping it’ll be more like 18 months - I think they did say if they keep playing up they can bump me up the waiting list... to be honest when this was all being sorted I was in so much pain and in hysterics I wasn’t really listening!

Has anyone had a partially emerged wisdom tooth removed? Mine on one side is impacted and partially emerged, causes me grief about once a year but this last time was just horrendous, the worst pain I've ever felt. Dentist prescribed antibiotics for infection (without actually looking at it, still no face to face appointments) and advised to take painkillers, but it's only a matter of time before it bothers me again.

They're really reluctant to take it out if they don't absolutely have to, it would be really difficult (cutting gums, shaving bone) and apparently there's a risk of damaging nerve endings due to the position and I could permanently lose feeling in lips/tongue, which obviously I don't want. I just wondered if anyone has had a similar experience, and whether maybe going private/getting a second option would be a good idea?

I had the same problem as you 4 years ago and not had it removed, took azithromycin (allergic to penicillin) and had an xray and a deep clean of the affected wisdom. They told me to remove it once the infection went down but I believe it’s because I had private insurance and wanted to get the money (this was abroad). I have since been to dentists in the UK and have told me it’s healthy and as long as it’s not decayed or bothering me greatly just to leave it alone.

I have had two problematic wisdom teeth removed, one was done in hospital under general anaesthetic maybe 8 or so years ago, and was months of pain waiting in the NHS queues; the other one was this time last year, my own really good but one man band dentist didn't want to do it for many of the reasons you mention (something like that they like to have another fully qualified dentist in the next door room who can come and advise or assist if something gets tricky like the tooth breaking).

So I had it done at a private practice near Waterloo with super modern equipment who do them all the time, so it was routine for them and all done inside a half hour visit, also because it was routine stuff for them the bill wasn't much at all. I was really pleased with it. I got the same scare stories from them about losing feeling in my tongue and indeed that did happen to a small area of my tongue, but it did gradually come back, over about six months, and is now completely normal. Felt like I had burned my tongue on hot tea or something, but just didn't go away after a few hours like when tea is too hot.

If I had the pain again with another one I'd go straight back to the same place and just pay to get on and have it whipped out, no question. However if the pain isn't too bad and indeed goes away I'd hold off, you don't want too many teeth out if you can help it. Can lead to other problems in years to come as a full set of teeth sort of holds them all in place and minimises the gaps that food can get stuck and decay. Once you lose a few then over the course of several years the remaining teeth can start to spread ever so slightly into the gaps, leaving slight gaps between the remaining teeth. Where food can get stuck and cause various other problems.

To help with the pain you can try switching to sensodyne toothpaste; try brushing your teeth with slightly warm / room temp water rather than cold; try rubbing a small amount of the sensodyne toothpaste on the gum by the affected tooth with your finger (I found this would numb it just slightly, enough for me to stop getting angry with the pain and fall asleep); and if you can track it down try Corsodyl SPRAY (has to be the spray one) which also has a numbing effect. Boots sell it on the shelves or your dentist can prescribe it. You can also ask your dentist if they will prescribe Colgate Durophat which is a high fluoride toothpaste (too high for the ordinary shelves, has to be prescribed). Brush with that for a week and it can "fill in" any tiny cracks and buy you some time from the pain. Please note I'm not a dentist and you should check all these suggestions with your own dentist. I'm just passing on some of the things that mine suggested and which worked for me.

My top right started emerging about 2 years ago, it hurts for a week then goes away. One time it flared up at Xmas and I couldn’t even chew my dinner which was upsetting 😂 then I got dragged by my dentist for not going to see them about it, mate it’s xmas did you really think I could get an appointment on xmas day?! Then this year I’ve had problems with my teeth on my top left, including a cracked filling which got infected underneath. This happened 2 weeks into lockdown and I was crying with pain then the dentist gave me some anti biotics and since then it’s been fine. I am terrified of the dentist though as last time I went I had 3 fillings but I think that’s just made them more sensitive. I have soft bones due to a genetic condition and seems to be affecting my teeth too which is v depressing.

Do you have a Dental Hospital near you? Ask to be referred to them. They have all the experts there and are more willing to do risky procedures more so than a normal Dentist. My son was referred for treatment the Dentist wasn't willing to risk (they're probably scared of being sued!).

I'm sure I must do, I'll check. That makes a lot of sense, thanks!

I am in absolute agony with an impacted bottom wisdom tooth! I was referred to have it out in hospital in April 2019 after 2 infections and my appointment has been cancelled 4 times! I had no pain for over a year and then it recently flared up again, the pain is like nothing else, it’s affected my head, jaw, ear and all my gums and teeth on the left hand side. It’s a constant pain which just won’t relent. The dentist gave me another X-ray last week and has now said they can take it out for me at the dentist this coming Friday, it can’t come soon enough!!!
Any pain relief tips in the meantime would be appreciated, I’m on regular painkillers and have a heat pad which is helping but last night I couldn’t sleep at all :( feel so miserable. Have tried salt water but that seemed to irritate it.

The only other thing that helped me before I got mine removed was bonjela. Good luck for Friday! 💗

Reading all these stories make me glad I had tooth surgery at 13! I have really small teeth and a small jaw so during my tooth operation he took out 4 molar teeth to allow my wisdoms to come up. They came up pretty instantly and no issues.

I did spend 3 years in braces and had a tooth pulled out of the roof of my mouth by a chain so it didn’t cut the roots to my front teeth off. Hereditary condition.

I’m 31 and I got one out about a month ago which was honestly the worst pain I’ve ever went through. The dentist was literally holding my jaw and I could hear him cracking the tooth. Afterwards I had to go back to him 2/3 times to get gauze put in, was just in so, so much agony. All fine now but it took about 2 weeks for it to properly heal.

Sounds horrible! I was meant to be getting mine out Friday but they’ve now managed to fit me in tomorrow. I’ve been in so much pain with it I haven’t even thought about the actual procedure and afterwards :( he said it will take about 45 mins and they will have to break the tooth up so it’s not going to be fun! Glad yours has healed and all fine now!

I was in so much pain with the wisdom tooth though in the months previous, I had to be put on a waiting list to get it removed and the dentist had put like a little cap over it until I could get it removed but it didn’t really help so I had pain on and off for about 3 months, as much as getting my wisdom tooth out was sore after, it’s really good as it’s healed fine and I’m pain free now... everyone is different, you might be completely fine. I had 2 other wisdom teeth out years ago which were nowhere near as sore. My dentist didn’t really give me much advice either on what to do to help it heal, prob didn’t help I went home and attempted to eat a Chinese that evening  Just go back to your dentist and get some of the gauze stuff put in if after a few days it’s still very sore. Good luck! You’ll be fine... I’m just a big wuss x

I’ve just had a coronectomy last Friday on an impacted wisdom tooth.

Had to pay private cos no nhs referrals here for wisdom tooth removal.

I’m like a swollen chipmunk but the best £400 I’ve ever spent.

I’ve had pericoronitis atleast 10 times over the last 5 -7 years, it’s where the wisdom tooth gets inflamed / infected. I’m 23 now and they just keep telling me it’s nearly through. They said it’s not worth having it out as it’s still coming up. It’s been years now, I’m not sure how long they wait before it’s clearly just becoming an issue? Now I know when it’s coming on and just ring the dentist straight away. I had it in lockdown and they didn’t even see me they just prescribed antibiotics which take it off within a week.

I have two impacted wisdom teeth that have been like it for years (must be at least 10) and my dentist always just says something like 'oh isn't it crowded - they've got nowhere to go!' And asks me if it's painful and to be careful because if they got infected it would be horrendous. I always ask is it possible to have them removed and she just says only if they get infected.

In the New Year I really need to register with a new dentist as my private dentist decided to retire during the first lockdown. It will be interesting to hear what someone else has to say as I have had the same dentist my whole life. I would like then removed really as they are horrid and I think they will only cause me more trouble in the future but the idea does scare me 😂

Yes definitely think about changing dentists! I’ve suffered a lot with 2 of my wisdom teeth and my old dentist said I would have to get 3 consecutive infections before he would consider taking them out! I had 2 infections and went to him crying with pain and he still wouldn’t remove it! So changed dentist and my new one took it out straight away. That was a straightforward removal as it was top one. I’m getting my bottom one removed this afternoon, a bit scared now!!
