Wisdom teeth...the devil

Yes definitely think about changing dentists! I’ve suffered a lot with 2 of my wisdom teeth and my old dentist said I would have to get 3 consecutive infections before he would consider taking them out! I had 2 infections and went to him crying with pain and he still wouldn’t remove it! So changed dentist and my new one took it out straight away. That was a straightforward removal as it was top one. I’m getting my bottom one removed this afternoon, a bit scared now!!
I have to find a new dentist now. Don't think I would have if she hadn't retired! My wisdom teeth will be the first thing I talk about witj the new dentist 😂

Good luck this afternoon! I hope it goes well and not too painful.

Thank you! My tooth is now out! Best £200 I’ve ever spent!! 😂 it wasn’t pleasant and was quite tough to remove as he said it has become embedded in the tooth in front of it! But there was no pain, just a lot of pressure. Expecting to be quite bruised tomorrow! But so relieved to have it out!!!

Ladies/gents - I’m on day 5 of my wisdom tooth removal and the pain is getting worse.
Is that normal?

Does it feel like a sharp pain in the socket? You could have a dry socket - very normal. It’s when the blood clot doesn’t form over the hole (or it falls out when you rinse your mouth), so your nerve endings are exposed. So any bit of air feels like a stab.

Call your dentist and ask about it. I went back after about 10 days, he confirmed there was no blood clot, cleaned out the socket and put this amazing packing in it that tastes like cloves but was amazing pain relief

No it’s a very painful dull ache. I was fine on day 1 and 2 and then on day 3 my baby hit my swollen cheek with his head and it’s been agony ever since. I can’t sleep. Just constantly taking pain killers.
I don’t know if it’s just from where the baby has bruised it more. But cos I’ve never had one out before I don’t know if it’s normal to still be in pain in day 5 or not x

Had mine took out this time last year! It was impacted with an abscess - the pain was unbelievable. Felt instant relief as soon as it was taken out. I have another on the other side of my lower jaw which, touch wood, isn’t causing any problems.

I was worried about having mine taken out as my dentist said it can cause nerve damage? Has anyone experienced this?

My pain got bad after a couple of days because of the dry socket. But I’d say if it was getting better on day 1 and 2, then went downhill on day 3, and hasn’t improved since then, you should probably contact the dentist (a faff, I know).

Maybe wait until day 7 if you want to be sure before you call.

I was at high risk of this so they did a coronectomy and the roots have been left in.

It’s actually got better from this afternoon so I’m gonna see how the night goes and call in the morning if it flares up again x

Hey everyone, I’m bringing up an old thread as I’ve read through and it’s really helped me!! I have an impacted wisdom tooth and also a decaying wisdom tooth, both top teeth. I didn’t go the dentist about the decaying tooth as I was so embarrassed, however when I did go I learnt it’s quite common due to position of the tooth!! Anyway, the dentist advised it’s ok to leave for now, however if it causes me any pain it’ll have to come out, along with the impacted one. It’s not causing me pain, just rubbing on my cheek where it’s quite sharp!

I am so scared of having it out under a local anaesthetic and if I have them done (which I think would be better before causing future issues) I would much prefer to have it done under a general. Those that had it done under a general anaesthetic, did you have to push for it or were they quite easy in giving it you that way? I’ve looked to go private but it’s £2.5k and I just can’t afford it with still being furloughed a year later:cry: Thanks in advance if anyone helps!!! Xx

Edit: I had teeth out when I was a teenager and the local anaesthetic didn’t work, so I felt everything! I think that’s why I’m so scared to have the wisdom teeth out under local!

I had my impacted wisdom tooth out in December 2019, personally speaking it is fine under local anaesthetic. You don’t feel a thing. I think it’s really rare they would do it under general anaesthetic?

I was told horror stories by my old dentist that my wisdom removal would cause nerve damage - it didn’t happen. I needed mine out also due to decay (it was really hard to keep clean due to it being impacted and partially erupted). I got mine done on the NHS also as it was causing me severe pain and gum infections. Best of luck x

Same, as an adult I had an impacted wisdom tooth that was putting pressure on all my lower teeth causing a band of pain around them, so it had to come out.

Had it done under local anesthetic, absolutely painless and very quick even though it was quite badly impacted at an angle. Slightly painful after, just as you would have with a normal tooth removal but no issues or complications, which are extremely rare. Good luck, you'll be fine x

Ask your dentist, if he has an X-ray of the tooth and believes it will come out easy peasy, definitely go down that route. Upper wisdom teeth *usually!!!* come out fairly easily because they have very short roots, lower ones are more difficult.

some dentists will look at an X-ray and say NOPE I’m referring that one!

im a dental nurse!

Jumping on just in case it helps anyone.
I had trouble with my lower right wisdom tooth for ages!
it was impacted, infected, all my cheek was constantly sore and chewed.
Anyway, I had to wait ages because my op got cancelled due to Covid but I had my surgery on Thursday (2 days ago)

I had my lower and top right out.
I had general anaesthetic. When I came round I was in horrendous agony! I had morphine and ended up staying overnight.
Fast forward to day 2 and I’m in so much pain.

I only got full feeling in my face last night.
my right side was so numb and my muscles weren’t working properly, looked like I had Bell’s palsy!

luckily I have found some codine 🤞🏼 It hasn’t completely got rid of the pain but it’s helped a lot!
I honestly didn’t expect it to hurt so much!
I feel like everyone is completely judging me as all I’m getting is “oh well I didn’t feel anything”

My whole throat, Jaw, cheek, gum, EVERYWHERE is absolutely throbbing 😩😩😩

Cant even open my mouth fully.
Anyone else had this type of experience after getting them out?
Xx

Oh no :( look up dry socket, apparently that’s the worst pain ever and it’s if the clot has fallen out and the nerves are left exposed I think. (Not an expert just read about it when I had mine done) I was super lucky and didn’t get it but was very paranoid of loosening the clot for a few days

I did think this.
the pain is awful, even worse today. it’s all my right side, all up to my ear, down my throat. I feel like a right wimp!!

I’ve taken 60mg codeine , 2 Ibroprufen plus my antibiotics and still in awful pain.

I will give it one more day and if no better I’ll call 111 tomorrow 😩😩🤞🏼🤞🏼

I’d go back to the dentist if you can that doesn’t sound pleasant at all. Hope it eases off. Try a cold compress on the outside maybe. Good luck!

You poor thing! I had two taken out in November 2019 and had similar throbbing pain afterwards, I found codeine didn’t help at all (apparently it just doesn’t work on some people!) but I took ibuprofen and paracetamol as often as possible. I had some slow release ibuprofen from Boots which helped taking at bedtime to sleep through the night as otherwise I was waking up when the normal ones wore off. I did go back to my dentist after 6 days I think it was as I was worried being still in pain, so he checked for infection but it was fine, just a slow healing one as it had been quite hefty to remove. Hope you feel much better soon, but agree worth getting it checked for your own peace of mind at least :)

I had two wisdom teeth out under general anaesthetic but that was 30 years ago! I then had one out at the Dentist with the numbing injection and the last one was really loose so I just told him to take it out without a numbing injection and it came out easily!

My husband also had his out under GA but again, quite a few years ago. Have they stopped doing it under GA?

No I had mine removed under general, I think they prefer to do it without but if it’s impacted and a complicated removed they will do GA x

Does anyone know how come some dentists charge ( my dentist quoted £495 yesterday) for wisdom tooth removal, and sometimes it’s free?
