I would also recommend “Just Eat It” by Laura Thomas. Most diets fail because we restrict and our brains literally think there is a food shortage, so make up for it by binging. This book really helped me to see that and it’s really practical and full of advice and tips as to how to learn to see food as fuel and eat intuitively.

I was furloughed at the start of lockdown and was proactive in completing couch to 5k, calorie deficit and being in routine. Crash walloped back into a shitload of work to be completed after furlough, comfort and binge ate and now I’m a stone and 10lbs heavier. Ive kept at it this week and I’m noticing small changes already. I’ve finally got myself into the mindset and I genuinely think once your mindset is there, the rest comes in hand!

My biggest bug bear when trying to lose weights is going on a diet, especially with WW or slimming world. As people have commented they are a business and rely on failure to get people 'back on track'. What they don't take into account is the nutritional value of the food and tend to be very carb heavy.

My piece of advice is to eat real foods (cut down on convenience foods and snacks) eat good type of fats (more filling and nutritious than other types of foods) and to avoid eating lots of white carbohydrates. When you eat carbs, it forces your body to release insulin to break the glucose down. Now insulin is actually a fat storage hormone, so when you eat carbs to excess it forces your body to store the fat instead of use it for energy, hense people putting on weight or struggling to lose weight. This is why the low carb diet tend to work well as they force your body to burn the fat that's already stored, as insulin isn't released. Low carb diets are hard to stick to long term, so I would recommend having one meal a day with no carbs and not snacking in-between meals. It's a small change but one that can have a massive difference long term 😁 and doing some form of exercise daily too, even if it's a little walk or up and down the stairs a few times! X

My weight have fluctuated so much during lockdown. I was either in a really good as exercising and eating nourishing foods or I was binging (horrific binger here!) and piling it on. I lost 5st two years ago by calorie deficit, gym three times a week (30min visits as I would of got bored) and a hour walk everyday with a good podcast. Doing exactly that again and I’m down nearly a stone in three weeks. I’ve developed a head cold this week so I just want all the carbs on earth the last two days but I’m not being too hard on myself and doing what I can.

Last week I had either yoghurt/fruit for breakfast, salad for lunch and 600-800 cal dinners. Had tea and coffee as normal and drank 3/4 litres of water of day. I also aimed for 10k steps a day and had two days of rest. I lost 9lbs in total. I’m aware a lot of that will be water weight, but regardless I’m glad all the same.
crash dieted for years, find calorie counting and walking daily works for me.

Does drinking loads of water actually help weight loss or do people suggest it as it fills you up? Curious because it’s always mentioned (I mean, I know drinking water is good for you, just wondered the correlation between that and dieting).
I’m starting today! I’ve done loads of reading about and I’m going for calorie deficit and seeing if i can finally tackle my awful portion control. I’m also going to try some exercise. 😱
Water doesn’t cause weight or fat loss. The only thing that does is a calorie deficit. Water does stop cravings though, if you are properly hydrated you don’t feel as hungry. I sleep better when I drink lots, which in turn means I’m less tired which means I don’t have god awful sugar cravings.

I’ve lost 13lbs since 3rd June and in that time I’ve had a Pizza Hut and a few other fast food meals. Portion control is a big thing, I tend to have 60g rice and 75g pasta which actually is enough. You get a lot more quantity of potato for calories I find. If I do have a higher calorie meal I just adjust the rest of my day/week around it. I don’t see it as a cheat meal or anything like that. I also started Couch to 5K on the 3rd June and ran 20 minutes non stop the other day which I cannot believe I managed.

I’ve done my first full week on nutracheck check. I’m trying to be thoughtful about when I’m hungry and getting used to food with lower calorie density to fill me up more.

I’m really proud of today’s weigh in (happy to share but don’t want to upset or trigger anyone) and I feel free from food. It may be short lived but at the moment I feel wonderful.

Glad I found this thread. Interesting reading. I am an impatient dieter.. I want to wink at a lettuce leaf and end up teleported straight to that magic target number. I've been there twice. Twice I gained it all back.. once was calorie counting, the other was slimming world. Now I am back to wish winking at lettuce... oh the impatience!!!

Just over 10 years ago I lost a huge amount of weight through Jenny Craig (50+ kilos). Sadly, I put it all back on again in the space of three years and developed gallstones, resulting in my gallbladder being removed. I also developed Coeliac disease which may or may not be related to all that. Long story short: be careful about losing a huge amount of weight too quickly.

I could not believe how differently people treated me when I was skinny - all of a sudden, life just became very easy - job offers, social invitations, smiles from strangers ... but I was miserable. As well as being freezing cold all the time, I was very hangry. I actually developed a bit of an eating disorder because I was too afraid to put weight on. At my lowest, I weighed just over 46kg and was a very scary size 6-8 (NZ sizing). I started working in a miserable job which led to emotional eating, which was my undoing.

Now I'm chubby, yet content. I'm about a size 12-14 (NZ sizing), so not huge, but I could definitely lose a bit of weight. I managed to get my weight back down to this level by pre-making all my meals (spending Sundays preparing for the week ahead), exercising very strict portion control, but eating a little bit of everything so I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything. I have these neat little containers that I bought from Kmart which have three sections, and I stick to filling the largest with vegetables, the smallest with carbs, and the medium with meat - I have one of those each for dinner and lunch. I also have little mini containers that are for my snacks (nuts, maybe some chippies, and a couple of small sweets), which I have once a day. For breakfast, I have an Optifast diet milkshake with a handful of fresh fruit blended in. This works for me but others might feel it's a bit same-same. I tend to struggle if there is a whole pizza, or a big dish of something - I'll secretly go back for seconds, thirds, fourths (I am not kidding). So I have to be really disciplined. I buy my vegetables in huge boxes from a local farmer, and my meat from an online butcher. This keeps costs down, and it makes my routine super-easy to stick to.

I'm not much of a fan of exercise, but I have a treadmill and rowing machine which I force myself to do 20 minutes on each day (combined).

I'm beyond fed up, track everything I eat and generally don't go over my calories (even if I do it's about 50 cals), walk between10K and 12K steps every day (not a gym person at all, I enjoy walking), drink 2 - 3 litres of water per day, generally sleep OK an yet the scales never move, I've lost a pound in three weeks! Not looking to lose mad amounts, a pound a week I'd be well chuffed with but it isn't happening. Just so disheartening 😢
you may not be losing weight but you will more than likely be losing inches! You should measure yourself monthly

how did you do it? Please spare NO details... the good the bad and the ugly.. really struggling withgaining weight in lockdown
nothing special just your average calorie deficit. I still have chocolate and crisps and treats along with healthier foods. I drink about 3 litres of water a day and aim for 10k steps every day. That’s really it tbh. :)

Totally understand how hard it is I have struggled with my weight since I was a teenager! At my heaviest I was 17 stone Once you start to see changes that’s when it becomes easier. The first couple of weeks are hard but it’s motivating once your clothes begin to fit differently. The key is not to restrict. Work out a calorie deficit and factor in the things you love!

I am too, I’m feeling really bad about it though 😭 I’m too scared to weigh myself but all my clothes (and pyjamas 😔) are feeling much tighter. I gain so easily! I feel horrible, I wish I could just relax and enjoy it 😬
Please don’t feel bad, we all have so much on our plates at the moment. We all deserve to enjoy ourselves a bit where we can.

You are always so kind and compassionate to others in your comments on here as other threads, save some of that kindness for yourself ❤

I find it really interesting to weigh everyday. I get to see how certain foods affect water weight etc it’s quite fascinating 😂 like I can be 3lbs heavier one day and back to lowest weight the next. I weigh everyday to get a sort of average for the week.

I’ve started going low carb (not strictly low carb but around 100g a day compared to the average 250g!) and have found it has really helped any typical cravings I normally have and dips in energy, particularly after work. I would highly recommend anyone to try it out, even just for a week, to see how it goes. Diet doctor is a really good website. Interestingly, when you look at who created the eatwell guide (the food recommendations in the U.K.) most people on the panel have links with food companies! Kellogg’s, pepsico, nestle.. you name it.. makes you wonder if they really have our health in their best interests 😉

Edit to add.. I also have lost body fat from this. I haven’t weighed myself but my husband has commented that I have lost weight and I can see in a photo I had yesterday there is a difference!
