Most of Oxford Street now is just awful, just those American candy shops and little else on half of it, I remember going there as a teenager at the weekends, going to in store performances at hmv and Virgin megastores, spending hours in topshop browsing. I often work nearby and it is depressing to see it now tbh

I agree, Oxford Street is really sad and tired these days. I don't see how it can be restored to the way it was, with online shopping and with the demise of Topshop, HMV etc

I think this was based on her book that was called girl boss for anyone interested. There’s also a book called self care by Leigh stein that’s fiction but a funny look at ecomm.

Makes me feel better about buying only on sale when buying new fast fashion (an unfortunate necessity for some items that require specific fitting or trying on in person).

And agreed, Jane Shepherdson actually cared about fashion and that women had decent quality clothing.

Yeh I don’t think buying fast fashion is awful when it’s done a select few times.. and ultimately these are industries that provide jobs and careers and opportunities for people.

It’s the boohoo/missguided/Zara models that just don’t work. And the whole dodgy supply chains which need to be changed

This time of year makes me miss topshop. Wandering round the sales after Christmas. Spending a small fortune on stuff one size too small or one size too big because all the 10s had sold out.

Same! My birthday is in 2 weeks so I would save my Christmas money and put it with any birthday money I got and go to the Topshop sale! Stock up on Joni jeans

It’s sadly American and about a startup ran by young women so more glam and funny than the disgusting pigs of British retail lol. Someone needs to write a book that’s basically the same for the UK, there was that film Alan Partridge bloke did about Sir Phil Green too?

I actually miss topshop on oxfore street. It was one of a kind, there aren’t many high street shops I’d feel affectionate towards but that topshop just felt like the definitive Oxford street shop. It was just so cool but without being standoffish. The DJs playing, the concessions…

ASOS has been in trouble a while now. Their old CEO (Nick Beighton) quit ASOS last October after being with them since 2009. He was essentially behind the huge growth (and success) of ASOS. It wasn’t really known why he quit, but I suspect there was some behind the scenes politics and he’s being diplomatic about it.

After he left, I noticed a big shift with the company, it just seemed to go downhill quite rapidly. Orders sent out with mistakes, mistakes with returns, returns taking forever, customer service ignoring emails etc.

they are blaming it in the cost of living crisis but, that just seems like a way to deflect blame IMO. ASOS has been consistently doing well - then Nick leaves and that just drops off a cliff?

I’ve stopped shopping with ASOS for a number of reasons now. I agree too, you can notice the difference with more expensive brands (I mostly shop secondhand for ethical reasons and tend to go for higher end high street from reselling sites). Although there are hardly any ethical high street fashion brands. A lot of the more expensive ones are worse than budget brands in terms of ethics and sustainability! https://goodonyou.eco/

Where do you think younger people shop, I’m 29 and can’t lie I’m struggling for ideas of where to shop these days

They’re PLT and shein shite but yeah, no idea I haven’t actually got new clothes in ages, they’re all so rubbish. Been wearing my shorts from 2013 on repeat as just ordered some more from asos and they’re cheap and thin with a cheap zip that will break quickly

This on Netflix looks like it would be really up our street but it’s pretty terrible a few episodes in? Called Girlboss

I watched this but found the main character infuriatingly awful, but sometimes that’s what makes a TV show interesting. I was disappointed it was cancelled tbh, it was a bit of a guilty pleasure!

Sophie Amoruso herself is supposed to be awful; really toxic and unpleasant. She was accused of dodgy practices with her EBay selling and was banned from the platform eventually. She was also accused of a lot of toxic practices in management. The whole concept of girlboss has kinda been torn apart now too;

For anyone who lives in Asia , I’ve recently discovered a really decent and really reasonably priced shop called Love Bonito

Unsure of whether they ship abroad or where else they have physical stores

I finally look put together in fashionable , tailored but breathable clothes for work!!!

Yes - I got a lovely one last winter and it didn't wash well. Disappointed as AOS not a cheap shop. Would think twice about buying again from them
