So my daughter turns 2 in 2 weeks she’s always been really good for going to sleep at her bedtime which is anytime between 7/7-30 depending on what kind of nap during the day but this last weeks she’s started proper fighting it and it’s taking over 3hrs to settle her and then finally fall asleep!! Anyone been in the same boat is it just a phase?

I feel guilty (sorry didn’t put this) cos I don’t have to work an extra day, but I just find winter at home with her honestly so boring and draining. The days are long and I just had a thought of - oh put her in nursery the extra day, it’ll give me a day to work half a day , more money and then the other half of the day, food shop/gym/cleaning.. but so many of my friends have said it’s the final winter I’ll have with her but she just needs stimulating all day. We could do a toddler group in the morning and then what 🙃 it’s just iPad, or colouring, or playing with toys.. in my head I think well does it really matter what we do as long as we are together and she’s getting the extra time.. and then on the other hand I just think about how many more tantrums she has when it’s chucking it down, and she doesn’t really like soft play, sea life centre is over and done with, role play centres we’ve done and still do, it just feels rinse and repeat.. sorry this is gunna be a longgggg message!! (Getting it all out lol)

My thought process is:

Change her nursery to a cheaper nursery, when work is busy and there’s the days for me to do extra she’s got a place and it’s not really costing me much more. I can easily take her out of nursery for that day and wouldn’t think about the cost - go and do something fun.

My problem - she’s really happy and settled at her nursery, she’s been going since December 2021 and she loves it, she’s made solid friendships and it’s twinned with the primary school she will be going to, most of the kids who go that nursery will be in her year at school too. She loves the staff and I never have any issues.

She can make new friends, not the end of the world? Kids are adaptable.. she is! I’d do some settling in sessions anyway and if she really didn’t like it then no harm done.

I just wish her current nursery didn’t charge so much.

The nursery I’m thinking of sending her too it would be £324 a month with the child tax free childcare for 4 days, all year round. And if I didn’t want to send her on the Thursday it’s no big deal and we could do something if I didn’t need to do any extra at work - I’d only do extra at work in a morning as that’s the busiest times really. My plan was to do 7:45am to 12 on an ad hoc basis depending on how busy my role gets over the next few months..

I also wouldn’t really see her on a weekend if she goes to her dads on Saturday and Sunday then I’m not really with her all week apart from Wednesdays 😕 just urghhhhh!!
But that’s my (badly explained!) point - whilst money is the main reason we go to work, its not the only reason! It’s perfectly ok to accept that actually some kids really thrive at nursery. You don’t need to justify it to yourself, everything you’ve said is completely valid! I work full time but she’s only in nursery the mornings, so I sort of make do and work in the evenings etc, but if I could send her full time I would, even though I can manage my workload etc not to, because she gets so much out of it and if I’m being honest I think she gets more out of being with them than she does with me sometimes tbh!

Kids are adaptable and there are so many reasons why they’d need to change nursery, worst case is she does some settles and really doesn’t like it. I’m guessing it’s only another year for you at your current nursery rates so not the end of the world, but equally if she likes it then amazing!

Honestly, I know it’s easy for me (a total stranger) to say, but I don’t think you need to overthink this or feel guilty sounds like perfectly good reasons to me, and again, you don’t actually need to justify it to anyone including yourself!! There’s plenty of mums at our nursery who send them in 5 days but work 4 or 4.5 and have that day or day and a half to themselves and they rave about how valuable having a little time to themselves is (can you tell I’m jealous 🤣)

Yess mine turns 2 next week and she’s the same, those days when it takes hours I find it’s because she’s overtired. Usually if she’s napped it’s 7/7.30 and if she hasn’t napped (which is most days) it’s 6.30 or even slightly earlier. Some days though if she’s been out and about in the sun etc even if she’s had a nap, she’s so tired by 7.30 she fights it for ages whereas if I can catch her tired cues and get her down at 6.30/6.45 it’s much easier!

Thank you xx ❤ I think I’m gunna trust half of my gut with this one and go for the viewing on Thursday, then if she likes it do some settling in sessions. She knows another little boy who goes there and I just think I’d be happier getting a bit more of a break during the week. I have to cram everything in when she goes to her dads and it’s frustrating. I drop her off and it feels like gym, food shop, washing, unpack, unload washer, all the jobs I’ve got to get done unless I’m doing them on a Sunday. I think once it comes back to summer I can easily drop her days down to 3 but even in summer we don’t do a great deal on a Thursday. It’s just toddler group in a morning and usually she chills out abit on a Thursday afternoon - this is where my idea has come from cos I’d rather she was at nursery learning and stimulated with kids her own age I guess through winter..! It won’t be until September so I have to really make my mind up end of July 🙃

Oh no. Don’t worry - it’s probably a leap! They have so much going on in their brains. Maybe she’s getting over tired or she isn’t tired enough.

Could you track her naps for abit and maybe adjust her wake windows and see if it helps. I know if Mini A had too much naptime it didn’t leave enough time between waking up and for her to be tired and bedtime would be a mess. I used Huckleberry and swore on it for helping me with the wake windows Etc!

Persevere for a few weeks. If it’s a phase it will pass and you’ll be back to normal. If it persists, it’s possible she is ready to change her schedule around napping and bedtimes. So it could be restricting how long she naps for, ensuring her nap doesn’t go past a certain time, or looking to cut her nap out.

Stick with it if he's been having 'good' days with the potty training. Lots of things factor into it - how much they've drank, distractions, forgetfullness, pure laziness 😂 are you sitting him on the potty/toilet AFTER an accident too?

I’ve managed to catch 2 of the accidents and quickly took him to the potty. He did really well this morning he did at a poo at 6am on the potty 😂 but since his first wee he keeps weeing in his underwear 😩. I’ve took it off for the time being 😖. He did really well yesterday and the day before

This is the hardest part of PT I find! When you e become a bit more complacent, you think it’s somewhat cracked, and you take your eye off the ball for a minute. It’s hard, and there will be times you question whether you should have stayed in nappies. But as said above, so many factors go in to it and a bad day doesn’t mean it’s not going well overall.
Back to basics, keep your eye firmly on him, and it’ll be fine.

it’s really normal for them to have “bad” days, he is still learning the ques his body is telling him. It took from October to January for mini A to be consistently dry (wee and poo) during the day. Now she says I NEED A POO with 0 ducks to who is around 😂 don’t give up, accidents are normal x she also used to be so up and down, the longest she went without an accident is 5 weeks and it was before Christmas and I thought she had cracked it. Suddenly she was having accidents daily then it was only until she turned 3 it was like a lightbulb moment - it just went from often accidents to nothing. Mini A had more accidents at home too.

Thanks. He has done well considering !! He’s had an exciting day at home 😂 so been distracted. He’s been playing with his toys and reading a lot of books. He did 2 before that weren’t accidents he took me to the potty to help him with his shorts. And he’s just had a half accident now where he started weeing and then quickly got to the potty 🥹. He’s done really well considering 😍. I don’t know what I was expecting 😂.

I need help 😩

My toddler is two and a half and is being awful. It isn’t all of the time but I’m concerned by what an absolute state he works himself up into. He is definitely no stranger to tantrums but they were relatively short lived. These are so long and intense, actual screaming and throwing toys around in anger and they seem to be triggered by so little - sometimes nothing.

I am 36 weeks pregnant so I don’t know if that’s unsettled him. And I know it is very hot but I’m finding it so upsetting. It’s also impeding on my life in some stupid ways, like I can’t have a shower without him wanting to come in and then he tries to shove me out of the way (I know it sounds comical but so bloody draining!)

Can anyone give me any pointers? Trying to emphasise with him doesn’t work, it just makes him angrier!

I think we’ve said on here a few times that’ while we sometimes see tantrums has having no reason, or not something we deem to be a “good enough” reason, that little ones DO think it’s worth getting upset about it. I would try to let go of the idea of quantifying if something is big enough to tantrum over - if he does have a tantrum, it’s big enough to him no matter what an adult thinks.

What sort of things causes them? Maybe finding a pattern can help you head them off before they start.

I think if he is throwing etc I would make sure you have a safe zone to move him to. I’d say “it’s ok to be very upset, but I can’t let you throw. I’m going to move you to here and stay nearby, so that you stay safe.” Keeping boundaries even in tantrums is really important.

With the shower, can you shower when your OH is home? Changing the schedule to take some of the flashpoints away is the best way to head those off.

She’s got blackout blinds, I think it’s the heat. Her room was 25° and the fan just feels like it’s pushing around hot air. We’re getting an air con unit soon, can’t wait!
