I didn’t learn anything new today but I did tell my Mrs that California was 10 days behind us. She obviously didn’t believe me at first but when I told her to ring her brother and ask him (I text him to warn him) and I got our 9 year old in on it. What are yams then!? i have been decieved all these years thinking they are the same

apparently, many people in the UK think "yam" is the US word for sweet potatoes, while people in the US often do refer to sweet potatoes as "yams" - yet none of us actually realise that yams and sweet potatoes are two entirely different things! so when sweet potato pie recipes for thanksgiving include "yams", they are referring to sweet potoes, and not actual yams, because yams don't have orange flesh!

That woodlice are not insects, they belong to the crab and lobster family

the different names people use for woodlice depending on where they live always amazes me! i've always referred to them as woodlice, but other names include bible-bugs, cheesy-bobs, chisel-hogs, palmer-worms, monkey-peas, chuggy-pigs, coffin-cutters, sow-pigs, chucky-pigs, grammer-pigs, granny-zows, pigs-lice, roly-polys, nut bugs, johnny-grumps, slate-cutters, cheese-logs, billy-bakers, armadillo-bugs, penny-pigs, dampers, hardy-bugs, daddy-granfer and pellet bugs.

equally, my bets friend at primary school used to happily EAT woodlice. like, she'd purposefully catch them as a snack. it was grim.

with the huge earthquakes recently in arid areas ie Turkey and Syria, you think, Jesus, what bad luck to have an earthquake so close to civilisation. The areas were close to fault lines and tectonic plate boundaries which makes them at risk for earthquakes. Anyway, the interesting part is that this also has a lot to why these settlements sprung up there in the first place. When tectonic plates rub against each other they can basically (crap explanation) cause bodies of water to form.

Without getting too much into it, of course people way back in history would set up shop there. It’s the only place there is water for miles. These settlements grew into cities over the centuries. Earthquakes tend to be really devastating in these countries not just because the architecture isn’t suited to it but because populations have naturally concentrated close to risk zones over the years.

Another interesting tidbit is that just before the massive earthquake in Nepal, something like 70-270 schools designed to survive earthquakes were built. And when the earthquake hit a week or two later, all of them did. Unlike many of the other schools. This led to way more money being invested into resilient architecture as the proof was in the pudding. Crazy what humans can accomplish. Engineers and architects are incredible

Although I don't know how to use Instagram, I do have an account to follow some tech and true crime bloggers.

Anyway after viewing these, you get some random things showing up.

Anyway one was a tech gadget, a banana cleaner.

All I can say is if you don't know what it is don't Google it from work.

If my wife had seen me googling it I would have been in trouble, it's definitely NSFW.

I can't believe how out of touch I am.
