Got about 3/4 of a mile into and Achilles tighten up. Still sore now 9 hours later. It didn’t feel right before I started. Sad as I was well motivated today. Week 7 will start as soon as I can
Oooft take it easy , you don’t want it to get any worse. Hope you make a speedy recovery 🙏🏻

First run of 2021 & first run in 6 months, I forgot how much I enjoy it! Evidently I’ve enjoyed my food abit too much aswel in the last 6 months 😂.
I gained a bit of weight since Xmas, iv only ran 5times in January, started off with the bad weather really didn’t want to hurt myself or have any kind of injury that would keep me away from running, but then laziness set in then low self-confidence I didn’t want to go out running as people would see how much weight iv put on 🥴 each morning I have a fight with myself

My legs aren’t bad at all but can feel the 8k I ran the last 2 days so a walk it is today instead for exercise. Had very little sleep last night worrying about a family member who isn’t well ☹ Going to go for a walk along the coast and hope that will make me sleep better tonight, and that I’ll be fresh to go out for a run again tomorrow morning. Also I think some new reflective running gear I ordered is coming today so that should spur me on 😁

Had to go back a couple weeks due to a few personal problems, day 1 wasn’t good they say exercise is good for your mind but having a panic attack half way through wasn’t cool 😢

Ditched the c25k plan and ran with my friend who had done her weeks on the plan.

Running extremely slowly (15 minute miles, so only did about 2 miles), I ran for 28 minutes with her, which was amazing.

Felt very sick and needed to go to the toilet!

You can do it!! Just remember it’s mind over matter. Ignore the voices telling you to stop and push push push!x
Well after all that, I got out and the pavements were really icy 🙄 so I couldn't do the route I had planned. I did do 5.1km in 35mins though 🎉

Thanks for the support 😊

The myth that long running = faster running is completely misleading.

If you want to get faster you need to RUN FAST!!!!

Running longer distances will mean you become fitter and therefore able to hold a better pace for those distances but that isn’t improving your actual speed!! Otherwise it’d just be a competition of who can run the highest mileage in the week and that’s not the case.

It's ok, I'm a vet nurse so I'm good with the dog info ☺

I was running regularly until summer, so should warm up into it again quickly, I hope! I was just too focused on running 5k and I was struggling to fit it around work, so thinking shorter distances more regularly might work better for me.
I think your body would cope better with a couple of 5k runs a week than a mile every single day

Ooooh! Ooooh! Oooooh!

I did some more stretching last night after my medication/injection and Psoriasis treatment (which involves a bit of massage in application). When I did a controlled twist, I put a tiny bit of pressure on my hip to deepen it a little; not only did my SI joint pop, so did a bunch of others around the sacrum - and THEN as I didn't move immediately, there was a series of clunks in my lower spine that felt like things were 'dropping' towards the bed.

I woke up without pain for the first time in what feels like forever AND my hips feel like they're level and working equally. What's more, I sat cross legged to do my morning stretches and my right hip opened up enough for it to touch the floor, which it hasn't done for about 4 years.

I'm almost excited for the running shoes and orthotics to arrive now!

I really want to start running but I’m worried that I’m too obese. I have been going for walks after work every day but find them hard work so probably have a way to go before I can run but have been reading some of the great advice on here in the meantime!
Anyone can run! When walking around you must see every body shape/ every age! It's the best thing and people will nod or smile. But I understand your nerves because I had nerves. Maybe go at quiet times like first thing in the morning? (as it hits 5am I'm up ready to go...because I start getting ready for work at 6). I never did C25k just because I don't like running with things. But a run round the block is stil a starting point. Give it a go and good luck. I'm excited to hear about how you get on 😁

This is my favourite time of year to run. I really struggle just functioning anyway in Summer, I get hot so easily so running in the heat is absolutely awful for me. I love running in the dark/cold/rain. It's my happy place! I know I'm the opposite to most but this is when I see my improvements in running, not in the Summer like most.

Just back on week 3.
Remember now why I find it hard to do
week 3.

You go from running from 1.30 minute to 3 minute run, such a big jump up.
Why don't you sub in an extra week or two where you do 2min/ 2min30 to ease into it more?

I just wrote a couple of programs for runners who are just starting out and used a lot of C25k but had to sub in a few extra weeks when I thought the jumps were too big or the program was too repetitive. It's a good program but don't be afraid to tweak things, you know your own body best!

You guys motivated me to go for a run this morning too! Had a banana before and can confirm it was good fuel. Aren’t they good for muscle recovery in general?

Just marking my place for when I start again. Fell off the running wagon, badly and am desperate to start up again but need to lose some weight first to prevent injury.
Previously ran an obstacle 5k (which is great as a first dip into organised running events), 10k's and a half marathon. I was happy, and on track to attempt a marathon when my mental health took a tumble and I'd also got involved with a running community which was not healthy in any way, but you live and learn.
Will be look to road run mainly, on my own but did love some of the trails near where I live so might dip my toes there too once my confidence returns.
Good running everyone and I look forward to sharing and learning with you all 😁

Evening all! Late to the party here, but on week 4 of Couch to 5K and looking for my fellow running Tattlers.

I used to run 3-4 times a week and really enjoyed it but I sort of let it slip and as any of you from the healthy eating thread will know I have become a potato!

Looking forward to the evenings getting lighter do I don't have to stick to the same four streets that have lights and venture out on some different routes (quite a rural area where I live).

Loving this thread, thanks for starting it 👍🏻 All my life I went to fitness classes, then when the first lockdown happened I took up running 🥴 i gradually built up my Miles by setting little targets each run and I was able to run a decent amount of miles without stopping, the most Iv ran is 10mile which Iv only done twice, I try to run 7mile per run 4-5 times a week. I started off with the Nike pagasus 35 which I thought were great 👍🏻 I then got Nike Pegasus 37 I was a bit disappointed to start with as they slipped up and down my heel, done a quick google search and learned how to tie my laces to stop that happening 👍🏻 And everything is great now, since the weather has changed and it’s raining a lot I got another pair of Nike Pegasus 37 shield £114 supposed to stop your feet getting wet 😡 sadly that not true but still a great trainer for running 👍🏻 The past month or two I started getting little niggles down my left side glute and knee only when I run especially when I got to the 4 half 5 mile mark, so done some more research, bought a foam roller ( oh my god I was in pain when I started this ) it’s now becoming more enjoyable doing the foam roller 👍🏻 I do stretches and do glute activation exercises and I can honestly say Iv seen an improvement ( touch hairy wood ) if that’s the saying 😂 as I’m working from home most days and sitting the best part of the day my glutes and hip flexors where weak and tight ( well that’s what YT and google said ) 😂
Iv started wearing a hat, gloves and jacket but after 10-15 mins the jacket is off and tied round my waist 👍🏻

Awwww you just did an amazing thing! I remember after my first half I was crying so much from all the emotion a lady came over to check whether I was okay and gave me the biggest hug. I had a pretty good cry around 30km in my first marathon too when what I was doing finally hit me.

Let yourself feel the emotion. It may not make sense to be crying but it's your body's way of releasing all the emotion that went into the training and race.

Also congratulations!!!
I cry a lot after running - I think there's something about achieving something I never thought I'd be able to do, but cried after pretty much every 10km, and a lot after my first half!

Had to comment after reading this thread. Started couch to 5k at the beginning of the year and finished it last week. Could barely imagining finishing week 5 and now I’m loving running for 30/40 mins without stopping!

How long would you recommend waiting before thinking of building up to 10k?

Ooooh - found you!

Got directed here from the Diet thread as I've been bitching about stuff and they're probably bored of me already and they said you were the experts.

Has anybody got some recommendations for neutral (as they're going to have orthotics in them in the end), cushioned but not too cushioned, vaguely firm, deep heel cupped, men's running shoes that don't look frankly ridiculous on a fat, middle aged bird who would rather be anywhere than being seen to be exercising in public. And preferably for less than a week's wages? Plus suitable off the shelf Amazon orthotics to keep me going until I have the fancy schmancy customs?

Context: Psoriatic Arthritis particularly targeting entheses/tendons (right hip tendinosis exacerbated by slipping on water into a full side split on the rear leg - my entire thigh slammed down on the ground and something went POP, original hospital said 'it's your age, dear - have you considered losing some weight?'), SI joint dysfunction for 18 months afterwards, finally clicked loose about 3 months ago, frequent complainer of plantar fasciitis, posterior tibial tendon inflammation, shinsplints, etc). Hypermobile/EDS III. And an MRI last week showing intermetatarsal bursitis. Or, in short, I'm a bloody wreck from at least the waist down. I'm fat, too.

My Podiatry appointment for custom orthotics is sometime in late April, assuming the Plague calms down a bit and my current Adidas 'those will do' aren't up to the job of actually going anywhere. I have absolutely no intention of moving faster than my current 18 minute mile in the immediate future, but the Podiatrist told me over the phone when he was giving me the good news that I haven't actually fractured any metatarsals from working for a living that, in the meantime, I should get some 'Proper Good Running Shoes' (his expertise is feet, not grammatically pleasing sentences, apparently).

As you can probably tell, I'd rather be in the gym. But until Plague fucks off, if I can't find something that helps, I'm stuck indoors with lacrosse balls, therabands and foam roller and continually decreasing base levels of fitness.

Now I've stopped grumbling, I'm open to the possibility of going back to running at some point in the future, but right now, even C25K would result in yet more damage. Hence the need for running shoes that will take orthotics. And I'm off to reading the rest of this thread....

(PS: I know I need to be seen in a proper running shop - but they aren't open and I hated my last pair of Brooks with a passion).
I'd recommend doing some research yourself and look at heel drop heights and compare to your brooks etc. Neutral shoes off the top of my head include brooks ghost, and asics nimbus, and saucony kinvarna, and Nike pegasus etc. If you like some bounce/cushion hokas could be a good one for you. That said the more padded the shoe the more 'ridiculous' it'll look. Just remember that everyone else is just focusing on their own run/ walk and won't be looking at you. An account I like to follow who's very body positive is @thelongweighdownwithjess.
Unfortunately, especially if you can't get fitted properly/try a range of shoes while being fitted it's going to be some trial and error. The other option is seeing whether you've got anything like running warehouse. In Australia you can send back any shoe you've ordered from them within 30 days even if it's lightly worn.
