I'm in Ireland and their show used to always come on and my VERY Catholic Mum would tell us that's not what Catholics are meant to be like. They're just part of a cult and pure scumbags. This isn't surprising at all.

This is fundie behavior at its most basic. These fundamentalist sects are basically just playgrounds for evil adults to abuse children, and keep their mothers enslaved and uneducated. I could have written a big chunk those emails myself, just off the top of my head.

These men have just been used by Satan, and Quiverfull doctrine specifies that Satan cannot influence males directly, it comes through the weakness and sin of the women in their lives.

I watch lots of these documentaries, I'm very fascinated by this sort of thing and have some fundie family members who think I'm the very embodiment of the Jezebel Spirit, and I am absolutely thrilled about that!

He frames himself as a martyr.

He demands that family members treat him as if he is innocent. The blame lies with the family's lack of support not a consequence of his actions.

His universe revolves entirely around his feelings. The 2015 scandal taught him that anything can be survived with the right PR spin. If they don't reach out, they are bad Christians.

Listing who contacted him exactly is an attempt to shame others into complying.

I get most of my Duggar news from Reddit but I feel like they're skirting arpund a lot of what they are thinking. What do people think is going on with evicting the Caldwells from the house, given that people think the victim is one of her sisters? I dont get what people think is going on. It seems crazy that kendra was happy on the phone call about her family being evicted. Does she need the house for money, for somewhere to live? Or is it about a break with her family? But why would she be happy about it if it involves her sister being molested by her husband help me out pls!

Total speculation but I'd guess that Kendra and Joe see it as a total betrayal. These issues are supposed to be handled 'in house' in their religion (cult) aka covered up without police or CPS involvement, legal proceedings or public scrutiny. See Josh's teenage crimes and lack of accountability before he was eventually apprehended on different charges as an adult.

As others have said they don't really care that Joe's committed a revolting crime or anything about the victim. They just want it brushed under the carpet, a quick private apology issued and instant forgiveness.

The fact that Kendra's dad a) reported it to authorities (a big no-no) and b) extracted a confession from Joe in a recorded phone conversation (?) would be considered completely outrageous.

I'm getting a strong impression that Kendra considers herself a Duggar by marriage and is honouring her husband/headship by taking his family's side and heeding their advice. I don't know about the 'leave and cleave' upon marriage thing in their culture. For the most part JB seems to lose daughters and gain daughters-in-law. Jessa is an exception (they don't seem that tight with Ben's family for example) and I don't know about Joy. She seems to lead more of a Forsyth lifestyle but is still close with her own family. Jinger and Jana live away and are more under their husbands' umbrellas rather than JB's. Jill we know about, I think she'd still be very close with her parents and siblings had there not been the falling out. It's been discussed that she misses their big fundie family dynamic and is gradually easing back in via her mom and sisters but I don't know how that's received in her marriage.

The daughters-in-law submit to their husbands and all the Duggar guys still have strong ties and dependency on JB - employment, church, money, connections. Some of the DILs have relocated to live in NW AR so there's a geographic distance with their own families. None of the married Duggar sons have moved away from JB's sphere of influence unlike some of the Bates sons.

All of this is exacerbated by Joe and Kendra allowing the Caldwells to live in their house/on their land and probably feeling like they did her family a massive favour/have supported them financially for years. Not that that excuses what Joe's alleged/has confessed to doing.

I read on Reddit that the Caldwells purchased an adjacent plot of land (or were gifted it by J&K) and were supposed to build their own modest home on it and move in within 3 or 5 years. That didn't happen and they've made no move to vacate Joe and Kendra's property. There seems to be other historic bad blood with JB dating from COVID times: Mr Caldwell wanting keep the church he pastored open during lockdown, JB saying no for PR reasons, JB being right for once, Mr Caldwell doing it anyway resulting in the Caldwells being evicted from the property they were living in, owned by JB. There's also a rumour that JB wanted Kendra's next youngest sister Lauren (they look alike) as a bride for another son. But due to the Josh scandal Mr Caldwell declined which didn't go down well with JB who's used to getting his own way and had by that time done the Caldwells quite a lot of favours by relocating them to NW AR, housing them, installing Mr Caldwell as a pastor at his church and probably other financial incentives.

I don't think the Caldwells are above reproach, it sounds like they've been relying too much on Joe and Kendra financially and for who knows what else, and trying to benefit from Duggar proximity. While continuing to pop out children they couldn't afford. But so far they appear to have the moral high ground in this situation (I don't know if they have skeletons themselves, fundamentalism appears riddled with it). Their youngest children are of an age that both parents could get out and work. They have a free childminder in their adult stay-at-home unmarried daughter Lauren. Obviously women aren't expected to work in their culture but with two incomes they ought to be able to support themselves.

I'm sure everything has been compounded by Kendra copping charges herself.

I find it bad enough when people put baby gates on bedroom doors. I know they have reasons but I find it as bad as locking them in.

The gates are for safety so you can leave the door open and the kids can't get out and fall downstairs ect.

I also follow the reprehensible Rods, agree she is psychologically fascinating but basically a classic child abuser/ neglecter. Her relationships with the kids are INSANE! The recent apparent split with Timothy who posted about having survived his childhood! Evil enforcer Nurie who i think is just as cruel to her own kids with weird Nathan. Samuel's courtship with that absolute nut job in the cinderella dress poor sad Renee. Beautiful Tessie and the next one with their newly butchered eyebrows the way Jill adores her lumpen, lazy Shrek of a husband. The way all the kids are put to work in the printing press like poor Victorian waifs, for one less chicken leg . Mamas snack drswer that noones allowed to touch honestly i could go on all day, they are absolute top tier entertainment

But it is also really serious abuse a lot of it and the most horrendous stuff is swept under the carpet. Like that horrible old man who the boys used to massage his shoulders and wtf went down with poor Gabe who had a serious mental break and was forced to leave home/ ran away

They have lost custody of thier kids yet Kendras allowed to move in with Joy and Austin? She shouldnt be able to since they have children. I know her charges werent SA but if shes not safe round her own kids, shes not safe round any

I know this isnt a Gosselin thread but I always used to watch Jon and kate plus 8, even then I thought she was a horrible parent. I didnt realise all that had happened to this poor boy though.

I used to also be a fan.

I really was duped by these TV families.

It was only when I was older and watched Youtube videos of Kate and Jon interviews that I could see the clear abuse coming from her.

I added the book to my reading list. It's out in october.

i saw a thumbnail yesterday but didnt have time to look at the video, it appeared to be a screenshot of an email from Anna calling his crimes victimless. I am sure at the trial, the police officer described the content as one of the worst they had ever seen.

I think it was her telling him that she'd had messages of support from people and that was one of the comments. Still not good though.

I think they're so deranged with their view of sex that they seem to equate all sexual stuff outside of a male/female marriage the same. So premarital sex is bad, porn is bad, sexual assault is bad, but essentially they're all sexual sins in their eyes and they really don't see how sexual abuse of children is completely horrific and completely different to having sex outside of marriage.

I’m Irish as well. I recommend watching “Shiny Happy People”. It will give you insight into how many these cults are. I now live in the US NE where everyone is almost Catholic, Jewish, or Protestant so it was confusing for me at first. The majority of these crazy cults fall under the “Baptist” category I believe? Common in the Deep South but more of a somewhat normal religion like Methodists. Then you have these little “buckets” under this umbrella. And the Mormons and Jehovas Witnesses are different story altogether. It’s insane for anyone not American really. Then there’s these ones Pentecostals who are a bit like the Duggars in that don’t cut their hair but they speak in tongues. I showed my own Mam and she was horrified they live stream their sermons as well and literally scream during them. It’s a wild wild ride, gives you a jump scare. My TikTok algorithm picked them up

In Australia it's illegal to identify any victim of child sex abuse.

Same in Ireland and even the US I believe, but morally almost everywhere as a human. She is not an official news outlet so isn’t held to the same standards. She’s already been sued by others for similar but they were the accused, shes a disgrace.

Those emails are so bizarre, from everyone involved. They just ramble on about nonsense. Josh sounds like he has Stockholm Syndrome from his upbringing. He alternates between railing at J’Boob and Meekchelle and “I love you Momma and Daddy”! He’s love bombing Anna to keep her sweet and it sounds like she’s bringing treated like an indentured servant. Shows how fake their show was and how different things are behind closed doors. I wonder about his siblings “dirty laundry “? Sounds like his defense was “ Caleb did it” but why does he blame the government?! Bizarre!
