I ment to say in my post, take some pain killers half an hour or so before fitting to help with the discomfort.

This has been my exact experience also. The coil absolutely changed my life. The only side effects I have had is that the skin on my forehead sometimes breaks out (I’m 40 btw). This is a small price to pay however.

I did not have a hangover when having it put in

Omg! My forehead gets red, itchy and sore at times and I could never work out what caused it. I have tried changing everything, cosmetics, food, you name it, I have changed it. Even had doctors prescription for it.

This year I was convinced it was tied into my hay fever.

What do you use to combat it?

I have the Mirena. I love it!! I don't have periods and no weight gain or mood swings. They say if you haven't had children it's painful to be fitted. Something to do with the cervix. I had my first fitted before children and it was very painful. I did bleed for a few days and get cramps. The second time it didn't hurt and was fine. My coil lasts for 5 years before it needs removing.

I also have the mirena and I'm due to have it out, was it painful getting it taken out? It was absolutely horrific getting it put in

I'm 54 and my coil needs changing at the end of the year. Do I just leave it in? Or get it changed to cover another 5 years?

I was told by my doctor to just leave it in. Which I did quite successfully. But a friend got different advice - she was told she needed a new one! Sorry, I’m not much help am I ? Xx

I have the mirena fitted and I love it! I would never go back to the pill again. I actually forget I have the coil fitted no mood swings etc compared to the pill I could always tell I was on it more emotional/angry etc. No periods which is amazing! My friend came round the other month and wanted to borrow some tampons and was amazed I don’t even have any in the house
I haven’t had kids so it does hurt getting it fitted not going to lie but it is only for a few seconds. I got really bad period pain for a few hours after but that’s it really. Same when I had it took out (on my second one) really painful for a few seconds when they open your cervix and then bad cramps for a few hours afterwards. I wouldn’t try and do anything after getting it put it just to home and chill. However totally worth it lasts five years, everyone I know who has it loves it! A few of my friends are scared to get it done but for me so much better than the pill and I would know I tried about 20 different ones

Had Mirena coils from my mid thirties to late fifties. No periods at all. Just had last one removed as I’m now now 59. Was great.

I had the coil ( without hormones) about 7 years ago. Nothing but pain throughout. Latest about 8 months then asked for it to be taken out

I had the Mirena fitted in 2018, I took pain killers and was smart enough to have the afternoon off work. I bled fairly constantly after this for around 6 months, with back pain and inconsistent flow. Now though, I barely even have a period! I don't need to use any sanitary products. The only thing I still notice is the pains..oh and mood swings. I totally recommend it though, if you're willing to persevere through the first few weeks/months.

My experience is a negative one, sorry! I had the copper coil put in last year and had it for a year, I recently had it taken out as it kept making me bleed after sex and made my periods super heavy! Also had cramping when I wasn't even on my period. As soon as the nurse examined me at my appointment to have it out, she said the strings were long and that the coil was sitting rather low so that's what she thinks was causing the bleeding after sex. I was a bit disappointed to have to take it out tbh.

I won't lie I did find it painful when it was inserted and i felt a little faint! I had a few hours of cramping too. Removal wasn't painful at all for me.

Has anyone had c-sections and not had any pain with the coil? I’ve literally had spectrums and sweeps and inductions etc but for some reason I’m terrified of getting it!

Me! I’ve had 2 csections. Both my labours I got to 4cm and had to have emergency sections (both for diff reasons).

I literally did not feel a thing. Nothing at all! I was petrified in the waiting room and honestly it was nothing.

i had a Mirena fitted three months after giving birth, and except for a change in 2016 haven't looked back! Love it. No period since 2011 now, I love it. I wont have it forever, regardless of wanting more kids or not, I do think that eventually I would liek to let my body have a normal cycle again for a while to see if any hormone/weight problems related settle down, but for the time being I wouldnt be without my Mirena. I love it.

Jus a tab bit uncomfortable when it was being fitted, like a smear test, but nothing major at all.

The insertion itself is uncomfortable but the day after I was wiped out. I vomited as soon as I left the hospital (could be a mixture of pain and anxiety) then had to lay down for the rest of the day due to the pain. Periods are still regular and heavier but I recommend it as a contraception

I've had the Mirena in for a month now. I was on the mini pill for 3 years with no periods. Swapped for the Mirena (continued with pill for 7 days crossover) but since then I'm bleeding all the time. No pain, just bleeding that's either very light pink, or dark brown. Sometimes its very heavy, usually quite light. Please tell me this will calm down soon?
Previously had the copper coil (about 6 years ago) and bled constantly and heavy for months so praying this wont happen!!

@lavalamp98 I have the same really intense cramps as you, generally end up doubled over and white as a ghost lol Feminax Ultra the one in the blue box is good as pain relief

But other than that, 100% recommend the coil, I have the Jaydess one which is just a smaller Mirena so perfect for someone who hasn’t given birth. Take ibuprofen and if you can Buscopan as a gentle muscle relaxant before having it inserted to help with the pain.
