I've had the Mirena in for a month now. I was on the mini pill for 3 years with no periods. Swapped for the Mirena (continued with pill for 7 days crossover) but since then I'm bleeding all the time. No pain, just bleeding that's either very light pink, or dark brown. Sometimes its very heavy, usually quite light. Please tell me this will calm down soon?
Previously had the copper coil (about 6 years ago) and bled constantly and heavy for months so praying this wont happen!!

This was my experience with the mirena. I had a copper one for 5 years without any issues. Had thAt removed tHen had my youngest child. Afterwards went on to the Mirena but bled constantly for 8 months - I kept persevering under my drs orders in the hope that it would settle but it didn’t. In the end I had it removed and went back to the copper.
Apparently it’s rare but can happen to some

I had the Mirena in for about 3 months and had that kind of bleeding constantly. It gave me night sweats and many other symptoms too, so I had it taken out. Have to stress I do not get on with any kind of hormonal contraceptive. Thought Mirena might be different as it is a small dose in the uterus but it made me miserable.

@Blair take a couple of painkillers before you go. Ibuprofen ideally. It does hurt, but not for long and its worth it.

They say it’s not as painful when you have had children but mine were csections!

Omg! My forehead gets red, itchy and sore at times and I could never work out what caused it. I have tried changing everything, cosmetics, food, you name it, I have changed it. Even had doctors prescription for it.

This year I was convinced it was tied into my hay fever.

What do you use to combat it?

I don’t really use anything tbh. My life before having the coil was so restricted as I bled so heavily. I figured a few spots on my forehead was a small price to pay for the freedom it gave me. They are tiny spots, which don’t bother me that much any more. It took me a few years to realise it was linked with my coil.

I’ve had two copper coils. First one fell out after I had a super heavy period and have had the second one in since. Haven’t had any issues with it. I found it hurt so much and was very painful for a few days afterwards too but for me it’s easier than taking the pill as I had tried so many that didn’t agree with me, tried the patch which was pointless as it kept falling off and it’s the best option for my husband and I.

I’ve been told that the coil is the only option for me because I am on epilepsy meds. Reading the positive experiences on here has been very helpful.

Ok ladies how much does it really hurt? I’d say I have a pretty low pain threshold.. like I found labour super painful, I’m talking begging for an epidural right away when I was barely dialled! I’m loving the idea of no hormones but scared of the pain!

Had Mirena coils from my mid thirties to late fifties. No periods at all. Just had last one removed as I’m now now 59. Was great.

Yes when I first had the mirena fitted I would bleed mainly spotting for the first few months but since then I don’t bleed at all

I got the copper coil in 2018, it was really painful but I liked that I wasn’t going to be effected by any hormones. I didn’t find it too bad but my periods were way heavier and more painful and then at the beginning of the year I got pregnant with it still being in the correct place. Since then I’ve heard a fair amount of women who got pregnant while using it too, despite it being described as one of the most effective forms of contraception.

I was told by my doctor to just leave it in. Which I did quite successfully. But a friend got different advice - she was told she needed a new one! Sorry, I’m not much help am I ? Xx

I have had the mirena coil fitted twice. First time under general anaesthetic as I was having surgery for Endo but got it swapped after 5 years. Not gonna lie, it hurt getting the new one in. My cervix ended up spasming and rejected it so they had to take the new one out and replace it but it was all done within 10 mins. I have no kids so don’t know what it’s like but I have had endo for 12 years and know the pain with that!

the coil itself has been a massive help, I still bleed but very rarely and it’s not ‘full on’ I do still get stomach cramp but in all honesty it’s so much better than what it was I haven’t had the emotional side effects like I did with the pill. it’s completely improved my life And would recommend anyone to try it

I’ve had 2 Mirena’s, insertion is uncomfortable (I’ve never given birth) but only for a few seconds. Never had an issue with them and periods disappeared after a few months which was great. Had it removed in Feb to try for s baby and fell pregnant fairly quickly.

I'm so jealous! I had the mirena coil fitted last year due to constant heavy periods because of fibroids.

It has made it easier in that I only bleed one week a month now but I'm still really heavy that one week. I wish mine had stopped completely too!

I have had the copper coil for about 8 years now and found the process fine, just felt like a smear which I personally don't find bad at all (I know it is not as easy for some!) just a bit awkward. When they're like ok, please relax don't tense up... really not easy when a stranger is coming at you with instruments haha.

The following day I had cramps that felt like my usual period pain. My periods were more painful for a while but have gotten more bearable recently. I notice my cramps aren't as bad when I'm eating better, particularly when I've had a lot of ginger though not sure of any science to back that up haha.

Periods are heavier than they were before but not unmanageable. I use a mooncup, I know some don't recommend the coil and mooncup but I have been super careful taking it out and had no issues *touch wood*.

I'm super happy I got it and will get another when it's time to have this one removed. I had really bad mood swings and depression from the pill so this has been a relief!

I haven't had children and I changed from the pill to the coil due to blood pressure problems caused by the pill. My first coil was a opper one and the insertion was awful. I found it uncomfortable when it was inserted, but the real pain kicked in about an hour later. Basically I passed out due to severe cramping and had to spend the rest of the day and following night in bed on strong painkillers. 24 hours later it had settled and I felt better. However, my periods were dreadful, really, really heavy. I only tolerated it for about a year and then had it removed and replaced with a Mirena. I have had 3 Mirena coils over the years and my experiences with them have been nothing but positive - no bleeding, minimal pain and no side effects. I'm 52 now so my current one will be my last as I will be post-menopausal in the next year or so.

Going back many years - I had a coil fitted and the midwife said to me just before my son was born - wonder if the baby will have it (the coil) in its hand

Has anyone had c-sections and not had any pain with the coil? I’ve literally had spectrums and sweeps and inductions etc but for some reason I’m terrified of getting it!
