Ian Leslie's book John & Paul A Love Story in Songs is a really brilliant read, I read it very slowly to savour it and think I'll immediately reread it!
I noticed the other day that a recording of their 1963 Royal Variety Show performance was on YouTube. I was astonished by how good they were. This was November 1963, so it would have been very much the performance I saw at the Finsbury Park Astoria in December 1963.
I concur it’s a great read.
Also I know this is a Beatles thread, but I want to acknowledge the passing of Brian Wilson. He too made music which feeds the soul

Absolutely!
Pet Sounds and Revolver were both released in 1966 (May and August respectively), which is extraordinary. Two powerhouses. It's interesting to think about what kind of album would have come out next were Paul not inspired by Pet Sounds.
Also the ages Brian and Paul were when these masterpieces were released. 2 very talented men born 2 days apart. Both with a real sense of optimism. I’m appreciative to have been born during their lifetimes
These men (Brian and Paul but even John with In My Life for e.g.) were so young when they wrote such profound lyrics and beautiful melodies. I can't think of any current musician who makes music on that level.
FWIW my take on why these young musicians were so creative back in the day is because they listened to a greater variety of music than most people do today. It was usual to be exposed to a lot of classical and church music alongside big band, music hall, jazz and popular music.
Equally I don't think it's coincidence that both Brian and Paul came from musical families. And it's been said that John's unique style of rhythm guitar playing was due to his mum teaching him to play the banjo.
Exactly @EleanorRigby when you think of all the genres on the White Album alone, the jazz/music hall styles ilPaul in particular was exposed to.

Given that the four estates will have the final sign off I'm fully expecting them to be full of the sanitised cheeky chappies narrative that they continue to promote. I'd love to be wrong but I doubt I'll learn anything new.
That said, I'm all in favour of anything that ensures that younger people are made aware of their music and its importance in cultural history.
I think In My Life is one of the most beautiful songs they ever made, and is right up there with God Only Knows.
One of my absolute favourites, along with Paul's Here, There and Everywhere and For No one.

The Beatles YouTube channel has quite a few of the tracks on it, including the remixed Free As A Bird. I'm looking forward to the "remixed" Anthology series on Disney + coming out in November. You have to give it to them, they're doing an excellent job of keeping the band fresh and relevant all these years later.
