For now - I've mentioned this before in the slopgoblin thread. My dad saw them live just as they were hitting the big time (early '63). Not impressed, my dad particularly called out their "woeful stagecraft". Lots of mumbling and dicking about. "They'll never go anywhere" he said to his mate.

They were the world's biggest every group. They could have churned out She Loves You over and over again, taking the safe route. They didn't - they really did push pop music forward in so many ways, being innovative and prolific but still maintaining the same high level of songwriting.

I'll never understand anyone who says they don't like The Beatles. The amount of styles they covered was so wide and all-encompassing that it's a ridiculous statement - there are Beatles songs for everyone.

How can I not join in! Thank you so much for starting this thread. I've been a lifelong Beatles fan. I can’t think of any other band who made such fast musical progression across the short time they were together. I find it incredible that Please Please Me and Abbey Road were recorded seven years apart. Seven years!

I met Paul a few times when his kids were younger, I used to work in a little corner sweet shop and they would come in on a Saturday. He was just like any other Dad (well obviously not but we didn't give him any hassle, let him just be as normal as possible), smiley and nice. No selfies then, and we would never have asked for an autograph, more innocent times...

I’ve been fortunate enough nough to have seen Paul 9 times. He plays 3 hours near enough, singing around 39 songs. It’s not about the voice, it’s about hearing those songs performed by him. I’m not religious, but it’s like a spiritual experience. You genuinely feel like there’s so much joy and good people out in the world. It’s 3 hours of pure joy. Cannot recommend highly enough. And if you wear make up wear waterproof mascara!

I'm sorry... imagine is incredible ... its the simplicity if the melody and the words...the beatles and their endless mythologies ...so bloody special and as another rightly said important...found myself so engrossed in the Disney special a year or so ago ..endless footage of them arsing around in the studio...(under some deadline? I cant really remember now)...like so much and so little happening all at once.......hearing paul toying with what would be the beginnings of let it be and seeing it all coalesce into one of the best songs ever written..the nuances and the tensions in their relationships ..."see ya round the clubs" when Harrison stormed off one day...how bloody gorgeous they all were even by 21st century standards and how luminously beautiful Linda was just quietly snapping her pictures...yoko doing her thing toothks for starting this thread...I adore them..

John was a horrible shitbag of a person. Albert Goldman, as much as people hate it, brought it to the fore of his biography of Lennon. Even if you read other books by people who are more of the 'John is awesome' bent, his meanness and unpleasantness comes through.

George was known for sleeping with young groupies, Paul was selfish and controlling. Ringo seemed genuinely OK.

Haven't heard much about him but that he beat his first wife Cynthia up a lot
He treated his eldest son badly and just seem to dump him when Yoko came along. As for Paul he always comes over as super arrogant in interviews. Now Ringo, here's a story, I used to work in an animal hospital in central London and before my day Ringo had expressed an interest in adopting a cat from the charity. He turned up in a Rolls and was nice to everyone he then insisted that the nurses get into his rolls and told his chauffeur to drive them round the London sights at night. He was a legend in that charity and he ended up adopting an old moggie, top bloke.

There were lots of jokes on social media about how Ringo’s will have the lowest ticket sales, but I could see the Ringo film picking up a kind of “he’s just Ken“ momentum and being a surprise hit.
