I'm not planing on making it a big deal with school but I'd i like opinions as it feels off,
My 5 year old swallowed a coin at school school (it happens no fault of school)
They rang me saying she was sick come pick her up (they didnt know at this point)
I turned up and they said she's just admitted to swallowing a coin.
We were quickly ushered off the site, I had to find my own way to the hospital. Which is fine I did, but surely she was under their care so surely yes have a parent attend but for their own back make sure the child attends a&e
What do you mean find your own way? You could have called an ambulance? I'm not sure if you expected members of staff to take her, despite you already turning up? Parental responsibility is just that. I hope she's ok, but the school did everything correctly here.

you’re her parent so it’s your obligation to take her to A&E not theirs. they’ve done their bit by calling you. how would they have made sure she’d attended A&E?

She was under there care, so yes they rang me but surely it's their duty to make so she was okay
Did they know she had swallowed a coin at the time or did they only think she was just sick? Sometimes kids will say they feel sick an nothing else, until they get to a point where they might freak out an finally confess why, which by then you might have already been arriving

An the only time I've known that a school will call an ambulance is in emergency's where they know it's a must an cannot wait for a parent to get there (we had a kid collapse at school an they called the ambulance an told the parents which hospital since they knew the kid would arrive there before they did) so long as the child is still conscious an able to communicate an there's no immediate signs of danger an such then they will just wait for parents to show up

I don’t want to minimise your feelings as you are clearly upset.
But unless your child was in immediate danger then it’s your duty to make decisions on what you want to do.
They called you and you took her to a&e. I think your expectations of what should happen is unrealistic.

what would you have liked them to have done? do you mean you think they should have escorted you to A&E or they should have followed up with you afterwards?

I just feel they have a duty of care that she got the medical attention she required, not all parents are the best.

i agree, not all parents are the best, and that is sad. but unless there’s a known safeguarding issue i don’t think the school are obliged to do anything else really. they rang you, her emergency contact, and that’s where their duty ends.
i’m glad your daughter is okay and she’s lucky she has people who care so much about her

My manager asked me to do something which isn’t so much higher than my pay grade and I’m not paid to assess. Not sure what I should say but I don’t know why I would have to use my time and mental energy figuring something out which I’m not qualified to do. I don’t know why she’s picking my brains but I don’t want to be rude and I have got my own things to get on with.

Could you say something like ‘that’s not something I’ve covered before - can you let me know why it’s been allocated for me to do?’

I'd just be upfront an honest an say that you'd like to politely decline as you feel you aren't qualified enough to take it on an you'd prefer it went to someone who is more experienced with it as with your own workload you feel it may be added stress

It could be they feel you are ready to take it on, but it also could be a way of seeing if you will just take on whatever they give an then you'd be in the position of getting more work an them saying "well you done it last time" if you try to decline it

Some parents would choose not to go to a&e. They might wait and see if it passed, just call 111, see the GP, it would depend how the child was reacting, it’s not an automatic “straight to a&e” case. The school can’t dictate what path the parent takes, just let them know the circumstances and follow up if there’s a safeguarding issue.

I’d be more interested in how they got hold of a coin. Aren’t most schools cashless?

Be honest and ask why? Are they seeing if you can do it and then possible promotion? Or are they giving you work because nobody else is doing it?
I’d be inclined to pass on it

Usually the school is cashless, everything is done online even child in need was. This was a one off fun run thing.

She told her teacher and first aider it was in her throat and pointed where it was stuck. She was exactly right, the xray showed where it was. One Dr's think because she aS so violently sick it made the coin stand rather than lie flat over her breathing tubes.

Ive looked online at the school first aid policy and it say they should ring an ambulance before parents

At the point that they rang you, they didn't know about the coin though? They wouldn't ring an ambulance for a child being sick? Have you got to the bottom of why she ate the coin? I'd be more worried about that I think - how old is she?

If you asked to meet up with a friend twice and she’s said shes busy both times and it’s been months apart would you just leave it for them to ask next if they do at all? We don’t live near each other and only meet up a few times a year.

Yeah, I'd just say that next time they could give you a date an time that suits them, that way your leaving it up to them an how they respond will give you your answer

What kind of vibe are you feeling. I might try once more if I feel it’s genuine.
Otherwise I’d leave it to her and if I never hear from her again then I know

I’m really unsure about what Christmas card to send to my father from my 10 month old daughter. I’ve sent him dad cards from me and hubby for Father’s Day and his birthday and grandad ones from my daughter. His response to the last grandad card was “not sure about being a grandad”… 🙄 It’s a long story but he’s only met her once and doesn’t have a relationship with her. His wife - who I used to call mum but I have reverted back to calling her my stepmum - is really bitter that I’ve had a baby and she hasn’t (there’s 25 years difference between them) and both my parents had a horrible reaction to my pregnancy announcement. My dad has lost his spine when it comes to his wife it seems.

Anyway, back to the cards… do I just send him one saying grandad from my daughter and a parents one to them both from hubby and I? Will my stepmum kick off if she’s not included in the grandad card? I overheard her telling my wedding nanny that she “isn’t anything” to my daughter because she’s too old to be a grandma… despite being married to my father for almost 20 years. 🙄

Am I overthinking this? My parents are a huge source of trauma for me (I’ve done a lot of EMDR therapy) so I’m trying to protect myself from another Christmas argument (after they made me miss last year’s Christmas dinner with hubby and in-laws). Do I just wait to see what kind of card they send to us first and just reciprocate that?

Do you want to send them cards? If they are not interested in your child just send one from all of you as a family.
I obvs don’t know the whole story or family dinamics but I wonder if you need to give them cards.
It sounds like you need to cut them out of your life
