Yeah, my fault really. I left it years before visiting a dentist, then needed fillings. Then I left it again for about 5 years, and need to get a little more work (although on NHS it shouldn't be costly) done. If I went private it would be a bit more costly for sure. As they say, prevention is better than cure and it's true. I used to have great teeth. They are still ok-ish, but there's wear and tear due to my sweet tooth and lack of dental checkups.

I don't know your circumstances, but if you're employed, can you get dental cover through work? A lot of employers offer it, but don't shout about it.

4 extractions as a kid due to having too many teeth, a brace for 18 months as a teenager (that was fun). Fine up until a few years back, I got an impacted and infected wisdom tooth - got it removed.
About a month ago, one of my molars fell out randomly. I panicked so much. Turns out it had broken in half and I have a composite filling now.

I’m obsessed with looking after my teeth so god knows why it just broke off!

How many teeth have you lost if you don't mind me asking?

I know dentures are typically associated with old people which is ridiculous as I'm sure many young people have them.

I may get him to speak to the dentist about gum disease and if it is treatable. He's currently on antibiotics so I'm not sure if they've put him on those for the teeth or for his gums

I lost one in my 30’s (due to infection) and since then I’ve had another 4 out but one was a wisdom tooth. I have a big gap on one side but you can’t see it when I smile but I do have other loose ones but am supposed to see a hygenist every 3 months but that got delayed in covid.

I was diagnosed with gum disease age 20. You control it with brushing, flossing, interdent brushes, regular hygenist treatment.

He said dentures wouldn’t work in the gap I have or something? Implants are SO expensive though so I can’t afford them.

I’m 58, had a few fillings at the back when I was a child and also a few extractions. Was encouraged to brush but ate too many sweets.

My teeth are not as white as I’d like, I don‘t know if I’ve overbrushed the enamel or that’s the way they are meant to be. They are straight-ish. Not been to a dentist for years. My gums are the worst thing, quite receded, but don’t bleed or anything. I’d have some cosmetic work done if I could afford it.

Thank you! Fortunately not atm, the dentist said I was in pain when the tooth was dying but now it’s dead I won’t get any pain until it starts to become infected. I’ve had an abscess before and know the pain!!

I might have to bite the bullet and go on finance.

that’s a smart idea to start saving!

My partner was the same. He was in agony before Christmas and on antibiotics. He's currently waiting for a referral to have it removed by an oral surgeon.
He's in 0 pain now and it isn't infected. He's just got to wait and if it starts to hurt again, go back and get more antibiotics.

Wow, reading some of your stories it just makes me appreciate my teeth so much more. I am very lucky in that I have excellent teeth. I put that down to genetics but also my mum used to give us fluoride tablets when we were little. These days fluoride is added to the water.

I am 40 and have had no fillings and strong teeth. I do have some receding gums from brushing too hard and get told off every time I go to the dentist.

I did have teeth taken out at 11 because of overcrowding and then had braces for two years. At 16/17 I had my wisdom teeth out and at 38 I paid for braces on my bottom teeth again as I never wore the retainers as a child. But it only took 26 years for one tooth to go really skew This is what made me get the bottom ones redone.

I didn't like the idea of invisilign, although they really wanted me to use that. I prefered getting ceramic braces and on the plus side it worked quicker. I only had them for about 9 months.

I hope I never have real problems with my teeth as everybody says it's the worst pain. And the dentist is probably the one DR i'm not scared of seeing

I'm 29 and have no fillings, no extractions, no orthodontic work. I'm convinced most of it is just genetics tbh!

Oh bless you that sounds painful. COVID has really made it so difficult with some services! It makes me so mad that other people are struggling.

Implants are ridiculously expensive. I took a look at them and we were looking at £2,000 just for one tooth. It's mental. They did mention a bridge to him but I think that is just to replace the one that he may have taken out as he doesn't have any other teeth behind it other than his wisdom tooth but that is at a funny angle. It's not causing problems but I don't think they'd be able to put a crown on it. This is the first time he's been told about his wisdom tooth as well. I feel like sometimes dentists just don't say anything when they should.

Yes I'm sure he'll be OK without dentures or anything as he can just eat on the other side like I do.

I forgot to mention I do have a dental plan so I can claim back the cost of my dental treatment but they will only pay 10% towards implants.

It astounds me that in this day and age we don't have anything really to repair / replace enamel and the best they do is add composite that breaks off often within 1-18 months. I think it's a conspiracy as an enamel that could be painted on would put many dentists out of business

The less you have done the better imo as it starts a process of ongoing and costly maintenance for the rest of your life. And don't go to Turkey to get your teeth filed down to pegs as teeth are part of your overall health! These influencers only do it because it's free for them.

I kinda think there's something in the root canal conspiracy theories and how they let something dead remain in your mouth. But that should go on the conspiracy theories thread

Lidl versions of nked bars are the work of the devil as they often have a bit of the hard nut shell and that's fractured a tooth. The fruit and nut bars are generally horrific for teeth with how they stick anyway.

Agreed, I thought at this point we'd have some kind of magic laser that automatically rebuilds your teeth but guess not

My teeth are terrible, I take care of them, but they're just weak. I had 3 root canals by the age of 18 and multiple fillings.

If you’re in pain you can call the emergency dental number and they will get you out of pain and try and allocate you an nhs dentist.

Oh no, not in pain. It's just a small chip on the front tooth. It's very small and barely noticeable unless I'm close up. Also, just a tiny bit of enamel wear on the underside of my front teeth which I believe the dentist can fix with some kind of filling or whatever it is.

No, I'm self employed. But still, I would prefer to use NHS as private would cost me. I have started saving Incase I have no choice but to go private. I will start contacting private dentists to enquire about their costs, but if I can get an NHS dentist then waahaay! Lol

My teeth I’m ok with
Could be abit whiter they are white but otherwise ok
But when I was 16 I knocked my front tooth out and had to have a pin and fake tooth put on the end
About 6 years ago it started to get loose and wobble and drop out and the smell that came out was awfull
Many times I have had to have it re-glued
The smell from the tooth would go away when re-glued but now it’s secure I’m starting to smell it again even though it’s not dropped down or loose
I can run my finger along my gum above it and smell it
It’s really getting to me
I chew gum at work all the time and when we go out etc
I don’t get too close to anyone but would hate for people to think I have bad breath when I don’t it’s my crown
I don’t have bad breath it’s that one tooth
The last time I went to have re-glued last year the dentist said it was very old the post now and needs to come out and re-do
But it would be an implant not a pin
But it’s so bloody expensive
I can’t afford to have it done
No wonder so many people do have bad teeth
At some point I know Iam going to have to have it done as there will be a time it just won’t glue and the smell is knocking my confidence

Deffo agree with the genetics thing, my Nan passed away a few weeks ago, she was 90 and had never seen a dentist in her life ! And she would eat bones from chicken and all sorts she would never throw out food

46 and 1 filling, I have had teeth out due to over crowding and braces though. I haven’t got a sweet tooth but grew up with unlimited sugary stuff available so must just be lucky

That's exactly the same with my partner. Every time he has been to the dentist, they've told him his teeth are ridiculously strong. Yet he's bitten through 2 of them.

The thing that I've been worried about with dentures is whenever I Google it, it talks about bone loss! Which has kind of freaked me out.

Honestly I'm just so confused with what to do. We're currently waiting for a call back from the specialist where I think the best bet is to discuss his options and see what they think.

The original dentist did suggest a root canal, which I'm also not sure is a good option or not..there's so many options.

How does your friend find the denture? I'm assuming it's a partial one?

Google will always bring up horror stories, personally speak with the specialist. Get a second opinion if you aren't sure. As these are your partners teeth, what is he thinking?

She's had no issues, she has had a few in her time as she's grown. She wears it all day, every day as it's her front set and is fine.

I’m 47 and finally lost my last baby tooth last year
I didn’t come from the sort of family that took their kids to dental appointments and so I finally had orthodontics at age 30. I had cranial orthodontics to correct an overbite and then further braces after I lost more of my baby teeth two years later. I’m now about to start orthodontics number 3 to bring down my retained canine ... it’ll be amazing to finally see what my teeth are supposed to look like when they’re all there
I’m lucky that I’ve never had fillings and my teeth are good ... probably because I got them through so much later than usual

I’ve bought them off this site before, please bear in mind this was years ago so I can’t vouch for whether they are still legit! Ebay is a minefield, you have to really search hard for the real thing, and you’re likely to never get them boxed either.

My teeth are good over all. Just wish they was alot whiter. Too much coffee and red wine are they are abit stained. Cant afford to pay 100s to get them whitened at the dentist

I’m similar. I rarely go (embarrassingly) and never had a filling or anything. I had wonky incisors though and got Invisalign so sorted now. I think it really is genetic, I’ve also never broken a bone or anything so maybe it’s just to do with general bone density and strength?

I got to 28 before I got a teeny fracture in my wrist and ruined my no broken bones streak. I'm pretending it doesn't count.
