I've had toothache at the back of my mouth on the bottom right on and off for three weeks now. It eases almost instantly with a salt water rinse. But it's making me feel so run down. It's not constant, but when it does come it's horrendous. There's no swelling and I can't see any teeth being wobbly etc. My wisdom tooth is almost fully through on that side, I wonder could it be pushing the other teeth causing the pain? Only issue is I'm absolutely petrified of dentists. I haven't been since I was a child and I'm now 25. ☹

I'm so happy there's a thread for this. 32 and I have a missing tooth when I really smile. hated this for years. The dentist is pushing me for an implant and braces. Every time I go the dentist I need new fillings, 3/4/5/6. My teeth probably sound worst then they look in my head. but I kinda had a red bull and sugary drinks thing through my 20s like a lot. I go the dentist every 6 months, I'm super conscious about my teeth!! But I'm kinda torn if I actually trust my dentist 🤑

So I went to the dentist, it was £89 for the checkup, I need 3 fillings plus I need to see the hygenist. I’ve booked in to get that sorted next week. Approx about £700 down 😅

37 and 2 fillings which I recently got replaced with white ones. I had braces as a teenager and while I hated it at the time I'm so glad I did, people do comment that I have nice teeth 🙈 They do require maintenance though, I whiten them every few weeks. My husband has perfect teeth without having to do anything but brush twice a day which pisses me off lol

It astounds me that in this day and age we don't have anything really to repair / replace enamel and the best they do is add composite that breaks off often within 1-18 months. I think it's a conspiracy as an enamel that could be painted on would put many dentists out of business 😆

The less you have done the better imo as it starts a process of ongoing and costly maintenance for the rest of your life. And don't go to Turkey to get your teeth filed down to pegs as teeth are part of your overall health! These influencers only do it because it's free for them.

I kinda think there's something in the root canal conspiracy theories and how they let something dead remain in your mouth. But that should go on the conspiracy theories thread 😶

Lidl versions of nked bars are the work of the devil as they often have a bit of the hard nut shell and that's fractured a tooth. The fruit and nut bars are generally horrific for teeth with how they stick anyway.
Right!!! The body is designed to heal itself. Why do bones heal but teeth can’t? I remember reading an article probably near 2 years ago saying they were developing some kind of gel to help grow enamel. It worked on already pulled teeth but they were supposed to be trying it on mice and then humans...

I agree I know many people with health issues who have root canals, usually something like arthritis and other inflammatory things.

I had a cocoa nakd bar once and once was enough, a big chunk of a nut or whatever completely freaked me out. Stupid things!!

35 year old here with 8 fillings 😳 big sweet tooth! I was terrible about going to the dentist when I was younger and I wish I had just hit the bullet and got braces when it was free as a teenager! I opted to have 4 teeth removed instead (under general anaesthetic, no chance I was staying awake for it). Overall my teeth have managed to stay quite straight but I’ve noticed the gap between my two front teeth is almost completely closed now and my one lateral incisor is shifting back.

I haven’t been to the dentist in over year now because of covid and was hungover last time I went so turned down the scale and polish!

I wish my teeth were a bit whiter - that’s years of drinking at least 4 coffees a day. I use hydrogen peroxide and baking soda to brighten them occasionally and I use duraphat toothpaste which my dentist prescribed me.

I would love to have white fillings but scared of the cost. I’ve never asked because I am terrible at saying no so if she turned around and said they were a couple of hundred quid I’d end up paying then going home in tears 😂
Don’t touch any current fillings to get white ones. Too many horror stories of them going wrong and resulting in root canals. If it ain’t broken, don’t fix it!! Not that I’m a dentist 😂

Hi. I’m 19 and have finally stopped sucking my thumb so am finally getting my teeth fixed. My dad is a dentist and has an orthodontics practice (Ik, I’m an embarrassment) and has said I can either have a fixed brace or he’s willing to pay more for Invisalign. Both would give the same result in the same time and so the only difference is how they look. I’m starting university in September so am wondering if people will think I’m weird for still having braces in university or as I’m still a young adult is it not as embarrassing to have braces. I do also look a lot younger than my age so recon in public people will assume I’m secondary school aged. If I get Invisalign I’ll have to take it out to eat and then put it back in. I’ve had a brace before that covered my teeth and I hated the feeling of it on my teeth if they weren’t properly brushed so I’d rarely eat when I was out and would just not wear it after eating unless I could easily brush my teeth. I also know that with a fixed brace I’d have to be more careful when cleaning my teeth but think as I can’t take them out I won’t have the problem of forgetting/not wanting to wear it. I know this thread is more about teeth health but if anyone’s had braces, any advice or opinions would be greatly appreciate.
I had braces at university and honestly passed for a 15 year old back then - if I could’ve had invisalign, I would’ve as I feel like that would’ve really helped my confidence when meeting new people as I looked so young then. Even now I’m late twenties I pass for 20/21 so I would say go for the invisalign, especially as the treatment time will be the same, the feeling of fixed braces is horrible! Good luckx

I'm 44, had a few fillings and a root canel. I am the worlds most pathetic person at the dentist, he has to give me a valium prescription to be able to do anything. Recently a filling fell out and I'm really putting off going.
I definitely know that feeling!! But having been that person that put off a dentist trip it resulted in a humongous filling in one of my molars which basically takes up the entire tooth 😢

You're pretty much describing me here! I'm 29 next week and so far have had 5 extractions and 2 root canals! I'm very unlucky lol, my teeth are all in good condition as in none of them are rotting, they're all nice and white and straight. I just have no luck 🤣
Me too, my smile is all fine... the back teeth however!! I think there’s a filling (some have two) in every single one

My teeth are terrible, I have two cracked back teeth both of which were badly filled in my teens. I need to get them repaired but I'm so scared of the dentist. I have seven fillings including the cracked teeth. Last time I went to the dentist I had to be sedated but I could still feel pain even after two of the numbing injections . My dentist has said he can see I have a very clean mouth but I also have a very sweet tooth. I would honestly love to have all my back teeth out now and have dentures but I'm too scared. It's ridiculous because I'm in discomfort with one of the cracked teeth

I’m the same as the original poster. I’m 37 and pretty much every back tooth has restoration in it, I have quite a few root fillings, crowns and one implant. It costs me a fortune to maintain. I’ve never been a fizzy drinker, don’t smoke, rarely drink alcohol (apart from uni years), and I have a healthy diet, and every other part of my body health is great (e.g weight, good hair, skin etc). However there’s no issues with my front teeth, not a single filling, so I look like I have healthy teeth they are white.
These are the things that I believe have contributed to all my dental problems:
-my mum was slightly hippie’ish and was very fearful of chemicals in the 80s particularly where dental education was concerned so we were always taught to rinse the toothpaste out of our mouths, I didn’t learn the correct way until early/mid 20s, she also refused the fissure sealants that most children have painted on their back teeth as a preventative as she didn’t want chemicals added to our bodies
-80s and early 90s dentistry was bad and there were massive financial incentives to perform lots of fillings, so many of my fillings were done when I was quite young which leaves a lifetime of maintenance. I doubt I needed them.
-I definitely should have been given a brace and had teeth extracted, to reduce overcrowding, I need to floss a lot, if you have a small natural space between each tooth your saliva can wash between easily which protects your teeth. I don’t have any space.
-I also learnt that my biting ridges are quite big, whereas some peoples back teeth are more flatter, so again more areas for food to trap.
-I reckon I have bad saliva 🤣
-although my diet is healthy it does include lots of fresh food (acids and sugars, lots of tomato based sauces etc) A dentist’s version of what’s healthy to eat is very very different from anyone concerned about body nutrition.
-I’ve had two children which gives you extra bad saliva during hormone changes.
-I definitely think I’ve been exploited by many dentists, I pay for white fillings, so as soon as they see I’ve paid for an implant and have white composite fillings they see 🤑 (no different to how some tradesmen judge your house/car before quoting for a job)

I’ve only come to these answers after finding some really good dentists and hygienists, who don’t come out with the usual guilt trip ‘you must brush badly, eat lots of sugar, drink fizzy drinks’ crap. I always say, well why are my front teeth in such good condition, and I’ve always been a petite size 6/8 so I hardly look like an over-eater.

I now have a really good private dentist who is focused on preserving the life of teeth, he sometimes does fissure seals when an NHS dentist would be pushing a white filling. I have B U P A 20 which refunds most of my fees for white repairs, check ups and twice yearly hygienist.

I hate my teeth condition and it causes a lot of stress.
I definitely feel your pain on all this. It is soul destroying being told you have excellent oral hygiene yet continue to have crap teeth, just because you’re “unlucky”. I regret not getting second opinions on the fillings I was told I needed when I was 22-25 years old and in university, especially when I said I would only want white fillings which are obviously private treatment.
I’m with a private dentist now as I lost faith in NHS dentists after seeing all the decay under the fillings on x-rays when I registered with my private dentist. I can only hope I’m due a lottery win so I can have a couple of implants 😂 I am grateful for my naturally straight, fairly white and non problematic front teeth. Just wish all my molars would behave 🥲

I need to go get my teeth seen to, but finding an NHS dentists seems almost impossible at the moment. I hope I can find one soon, gonna keep looking and calling around. How have people been coping with trying to find one?
If you’re in pain you can call the emergency dental number and they will get you out of pain and try and allocate you an nhs dentist.

Well this is in wales, not sure what’s it like everywhere!

Mid 20s no fillings, had gingivitis once as a child, no problems since! In fact, went to the dentist two weeks ago and he said I had the best teeth he’d seen all day 😅 the only problem I get is staining on my front two teeth because I drink black tea and coffee, but the dentist polishes it away when I g.

little sister on the other hand, crowns, caps, fillings from when she was a child! She maybe ate a few more sweets than me but my mums side doesn’t have very good teeth anyway!

I'm 20 and I have a few extracted teeth and a lot of fillings. A lot of it is from me being scared of the dentists and just letting my teeth get bad but now I need a new filling every 6 or so months

Turns out my teeth are just crap. Doesn't matter how much I brush or floss 🤷‍♀️

Seems to be a running theme in the family
I feel your pain. My dentist has said there is nothing else I can do as my brushing/flossing is spot on. I just worry about how I’ll eat anything if I lose my molars😂 (the worst ones for big fillings!)

I agree! My advice is always if your amalgam filling needs changing, then swap to composite if you want a white filling.
It seems to be straight from what I can tell
Is it your gum? You’re doing the right thing rinsing with salt water. Maybe buy some corsodyl also and rinse with this, swish it in the area of your wisdom. Even get a cotton bud and dip it the corsodyl and dab it on the area. Make sure you’re cleaning really well. If it persists, I’d advise seeing a dentist to check it over.

He has said he wants it out of his mouth. He didn't want a route canal. But he is going to ask the specialist for their opinion. Especially as the tooth is welded to the jaw it'll take a lot more to get it out. As it is the back left, he isn't too concerned as you can't see them unless he really opens his mouth and he has a full beard so you wouldnt see anything in terms of face sinking or anything like that if his teeth did move.

He has been offered the chance of a bridge but that will depend on how his jaw settles and how it recovers. Considering he's missing his back 3 teeth, I'm not sure how they'll bridge it unless they just attach to the remaining tooth.

My granddad had all of his back teeth removed both sides and top and bottom. He managed fine and could pretty much eat whatever he wanted.

It's just the uncertainty and not being able to help that I'm struggling with. Which sounds daft cos they aren't my teeth!
He may have gum disease and you do get bone loss with that as I have it and have lost teeth on one side (top and bottom). I just eat on the other side. My dentist tried to persuade me to get implants he didn’t even offer me dentures so when I asked about them he came up with some ridiculous excuse. I think they’re in it for the money!

Oh bless you. It's such a nightmare isn't it? Teeth are so delicate to say they're so strong and I'm convinced they should be able to grow enamel or something. And that some dentists do tell you incorrect information to get money out of you. Private dentists scare me with that.

My granddad spent all of his adult life with no back teeth. He had dentures made but refused to wear them. There are also rumours in the family he pulled them out with pliers.

How many teeth do you have out if you don't mind me asking? I actually think teeth problems are way more common than people think! I know I was oblivious to it until my partner had his trouble. Weirdly he looks after his teeth so well but does grind them when he's asleep which we think has caused a lot of the issues.
Definitely nightmare! I get scared to eat some foods as I don’t want my teeth to snap as they’re so weak, my dad is the same lots of his are broken or fallen out. I have terrible anxiety going to the dentist it makes my stomach flip talking about it. Maybe last or before i got my back tooth taken out a few years before that I got a bottom back one taken out, when I was younger I remember getting a few out from my back and when one grew back it pushed its way to the back inside so two teeth next to my big one is one tooth behind (if that makes sense lol)
I have two kids and I’m always on to them brushing properly they don’t have fizzy drinks never tried any, my oldest didn’t even have fruit juice until she was 2 when someone gave her some 🙄 but my family think I’m so harsh not giving them coke or lemonade, they’re 7 & 4 so if they want when they’re older go ahead but for now look at me and see what it’s done to mine.
It’s weird though as I always look at peoples teeth and think wow are people looking at mine as I’m looking at theirs, I do debate on getting them done privately and spending all that money but for one I don’t have that money 😂 and two I’m so scared of the dentist and feel like my teeth are beyond any repair to make them health and white.

Teeth are SUCH a genetics thing.
This exactly. I've got friends who are non identical twins but they look pretty similar. Very same lifestyle growing up but one has perfectly straight white strong teeth and the other has the opposite. The one with naturally bad teeth gives them a lot more care and attention. But that's life and you can't do anything about the genetics you were given.

Wow, reading some of your stories it just makes me appreciate my teeth so much more. I am very lucky in that I have excellent teeth. I put that down to genetics but also my mum used to give us fluoride tablets when we were little. These days fluoride is added to the water.

I am 40 and have had no fillings and strong teeth. I do have some receding gums from brushing too hard and get told off every time I go to the dentist.

I did have teeth taken out at 11 because of overcrowding and then had braces for two years. At 16/17 I had my wisdom teeth out and at 38 I paid for braces on my bottom teeth again as I never wore the retainers as a child. But it only took 26 years for one tooth to go really skew 😂 This is what made me get the bottom ones redone.

I didn't like the idea of invisilign, although they really wanted me to use that. I prefered getting ceramic braces and on the plus side it worked quicker. I only had them for about 9 months.

I hope I never have real problems with my teeth as everybody says it's the worst pain. And the dentist is probably the one DR i'm not scared of seeing :)
Yeah that's good. My teeth have taken a bit of a hammering over the years, but they've remained aesthetically not too bad, but I need a tiny bit of cosmetic work on them. I don't know if it's genetics for me, but probably more so to do with my diet of the past.

As a teenager I loved fast food, soda and crap junk food. Not ideal at all. In hindsight I haven't treated my teeth good enough, and neglected them too much by putting off the dentist visits for many years in between. I think I last went to the dentist 4 years ago. 😬😬😬

How has your diet been over the years? Are you someone who snacks on junk food or soda, or not so much? Diet is the most important aspect to maintaining good teeth in my opinion. I have cut out soda, pretty much entirely now.

28 and teeth are fine for the most part!

I have three fillings that I got in my teens, they are ugly grey ones but at the back of my mouth so nobody sees.

The gum around one of my front teeth has receded which makes them look really imbalanced and annoys me. I think you can get some kind of gum surgery to correct it but it’s expensive!

Had braces in my teens and they are all wonky again so I’d like braces but it’s just so expensive 😢

My teeth are good over all. Just wish they was alot whiter. Too much coffee and red wine are they are abit stained. Cant afford to pay 100s to get them whitened at the dentist 😔
I’m here for any inexpensive, teeth whitening advice/recommendations. I’m a serial tea drinker so they’re staining. I can’t change my toothpaste as I’m using one specifically for sensitive teeth.
