Not Steven's biggest fan but thought his comment was pretty harmless. He's not saying you have to 'optimise' your life and track every breath you breathe. He probably doesn't even do that himself, it's all part of his personal brand so he can attract more people of that ilk who think they are God's gift and have millions of minions who buy into all that crap. I think Jake Humphrey is even worse than Steven when it comes to that.
It was harmless really but just totally shows how insane the optimisation culture is if having a couple glasses of wine is ruining someone's life for 3 days. What ever happened to balance? Part of his brand is indeed optimising every part of life. Remove joy from everything, replace your food with huel drinks lol.

And I'm saying all this as someone who focuses on optimising a lot 🤣

Not gonna lie, Steven REALLY annoys me, I find him super irritating and arrogant but I really don’t think what he said was that deep and warrants the level of mocking he’s got, I agree optimisation culture is stupid and unhealthy but also, I kind of agree with him and his take on alcohol, 3 glasses of wine is almost a bottle of wine depending on the measure. My husband has actually given up alcohol not because he wants to optimise every inch of his life but because it makes him feel like tit for about 3 days afterwards and I can’t lie I agree it does, Steven was right that it does mean you don’t eat as well the next day, which also adds to you feeling tit. I do drink alcohol but not a lot, I have a baby and when I have gone out and had a few large glasses of wine I am a worse parent the next day, I just am, I feel rubbish and like I can’t be arsed! So I don’t drink much now.

I totally understand why people push back on optimisation culture. Not everything in life has to be about productivity and performance. Sometimes it’s nice to have a few drinks with your mates and not analyse it to death, but we’ve got to a point where saying “alcohol negatively affects me for a few days afterwards” is apparently enough to get you mocked by half the internet. British culture is so centred around drinking that I sometimes think people take any criticism of alcohol really personally. If someone saying they don’t drink because it makes them feel awful offends you, or if someone pointing out that alcohol has consequences beyond the actual night out bothers you that much, then maybe that’s worth thinking about.

I also don’t think Steven literally meant three glasses of wine ruined his life. It was obviously just a figure of speech. The reaction has been far more ridiculous than the comment itself.

Glad I found this thread. Was a bit of a fan at the start, but gradually gone off him as he doesn't come across as that smart, and I hate the fake accent. Obviously he's smart enough to make a ton of money, but some of his guests are way out of his depth and he just ends up looking like a tool.

I don't have any tracking device on me, but I did agree with him that having alcohol after being sober really does highlight what a messy drug it is, and I was shocked he's getting flack over it. I don't think he'll be losing much sleep over it tho.

He's not getting flack over not drinking. He's getting it over the fact that a couple of glasses of wine can apparently knock out the optimised productivity master for 3 days. Plus the fact he said he didn't go to the gym or "podcasted wrong" is just stupid when plenty people who don't brag about all their optimisation have way more responsibilities which they have to do when they don't feel well.

Exactly, he wasn't claiming to be an alcoholic having a slip up or something, 2 glasses of wine for a person without an issue shouldn't "ruin" 3 days of their life. Also, his life as portrayed in this way just seems to dull. Why "optjmise" everything? Have some fun, (by which I don't mean having alcohol) I mean just doing things which aren't "productive" for your job/health

It just shows how his strategy is failing if his productivity gets derailed by a minor inconvenience. Imagine this guy having kids for example, want to see him podcast after multiple sleepless nights for example.

Exactly, there was a hilarious thing I saw online earlier making fun of it (will try and find it) but saying how his "prodcutive" day is already way less than any standard parent who does his work plus also raising a person (I say this as someone proudly childfree)
