That was not an easy read, due to the topic. And I’m no fan of Hari, but fair play to him, he called out that abusive behaviour.
Fry’s play sounds horrific.
What I also got from that article is how dodgy Alan Bennett is. Why don’t people talk about this?

I think some ( I say some, not all) gay men get away with having some very ill-informed or misogynistic things to say about women, and it just isn't challenged as they are seen as not being a sexual or physical threat to women.
Also, age gap and other unconventional relationships can be seen as more acceptable due to there being a smaller pool of partners to pick from.
However, I can see some of these upper class twits, who spent to much time reading classics at boarding school, getting caught up in the ' romantic idea' of how the Greeks and Romans were and thinking that it is their privilege and right to educate a boy into manhood or some bull.
I also think there are probably some people who were sexually abused when younger, or have atleast had inappropriate sexual encounters and have rationalised it by seeing it a 'sexual awakening' and 'that never did me any harm', so I will do it to others, rather than recognising it as harmful behaviour.
I am not saying that this applies to Fry, I don't know what goes on on his head or if he has said anything that suggests he is like this.
To bring it back to him though, I can remember him doing an interview and saying that he didn't think that women liked sex because if they did they would be cottaging or shagging strangers in graveyards, and because women are not as promiscuous as some gay men, that was proof we hated sex.
So after that, I stopped thinking that Stephen 'Famous women expert' Fry had anything clever to say about anything.

Fry was on the list of members of the Garrick Club campaigning recently to have women admitted to the all men's club. After being a member for God knows how many years, very happy to go to a club that does not admit women. He's still a misogynist. And weird.
OT but because our profile pic is so similar, I always think “when did I say this!? Did I have a drink last night?” whenever I see your posts.
I was so heartbroken when Rik died.
Every now and again one of his mad (and hilarious) letters to fans will resurface, and you can hear his voice as you read them. Mainly things like “you b!”
He seems to have flounced from X at least four times, but now would appear to be active on Threads. I’m not on Threads, so don’t know if he’s prone to this behaviour on there as well, but it wouldn’t surprise me!
Yes, he’s very dodgy. There are multiple nods to adult/teen sex in The History Boys. I seem to remember at the end of the play, another character (can’t remember whether it was Irwin, the young teacher, or one of the boys who later became a teacher) alludes to the fact that he is sexually attracted to 17 year old students but knows he mustn’t act on it. I encountered Bennett once in a professional capacity when he was in his 60s and his partner at the time was in his early twenties.

I've Googled, and it looks like they are. Fry called Laurie his best friend in a 2020 interview.
Fry wrote a really glowing dedication to Laurie in one of his autobiographies.
I saw some kind of documentary on Fry once, where he talked about going missing and Laurie being furious and saying to him that “you don’t realise how people love you”
It stuck with me, because I questioned whether Fry deserved that kind of loyalty.
I quite like Hugh Laurie, so I guess I find it hard to square the friendship.

I can't stand the man and haven't ever been able to, even at the time of Fry & Laurie with Hugh Laurie. He seems to love himself too much and be totally devoid of humility. His pompous and condescending voice makes me want to throw something.
The entertainment industry really is a place where predatory gay men protect one another isn’t it?
Unlike many on the thread, I used to really like Stephen Fry. I thought he was warm, engaging, really intelligent. I started to hear on his views on women and have come full circle. I was so disappointed when he did the interludes on the album of a band I love recently, always, always skip them as he sets my teeth on edge now.

In this modern era, it is so easy for celebrities to overshare everything about their life. Any embarrassing thing they do or say is now recorded for ever and easy to find with a quick Google.
So sometimes, I think we just start to see all these sides to someone we would never have been aware of a decade ago, and then something just starts to not feel right.
I used to really believe everything Jack Monro said, but then I started to notice little things like...the recipes in her books not being very good ( I thought that maybe that one book was not for me, but each book I bought seemed worse), her stories did not always ring true or contradicted something she had said before and she always seemed to have a story/opinion that related to a topical issue ( the DV, being trans for a week, supposedly working in a brothel, having a DSD), and one day I just cracked and typed something like ' jack Monroe anti rant' into Google and I came here.
