My opinion of him has altered drastically from thinking he’s a national treasure to just feeling like he’s a pompous, misogynistic arsehole. With potentially problematic issues around predilections for young men…

I’m parking myself here. I watched a documentary about him and bipolar years back and found it informative. He blamed running away from the show he was performing in, leaving the country by ferry and going ‘missing’ down to his illness but there’s a lot of speculation that it was something else entirely.

I don’t like him, I think he’s a pompous arse.

It’s strange that they haven’t been pictured together for years.

Records of his misogyny go back years: There’s the comments around sex being the price women are prepared to pay for a relationship. https://ontd-feminism.livejournal.com/425752.html? Also, in that article, he compares being interviewed for a magazine article with being r*ped. He criticised those who condemned his comments.

Then, more recently there’s the comments he allegedly made at the MCC dinner.

He seems to have a real problem with women. When asked about when he realised he was gay, he responded, “I suppose it all began when I came out of the womb. I looked back up at my mother and thought to myself, that’s the last time I’m going up one of those.”
He seems to be a narcissist who hates people disagreeing with him. He’s always deactivating then reactivating Twitter/X .

I think some ( I say some, not all) gay men get away with having some very ill-informed or misogynistic things to say about women, and it just isn't challenged as they are seen as not being a sexual or physical threat to women.

Also, age gap and other unconventional relationships can be seen as more acceptable due to there being a smaller pool of partners to pick from.

However, I can see some of these upper class twits, who spent to much time reading classics at boarding school, getting caught up in the ' romantic idea' of how the Greeks and Romans were and thinking that it is their privilege and right to educate a boy into manhood or some bullshit.

I also think there are probably some people who were sexually abused when younger, or have atleast had inappropriate sexual encounters and have rationalised it by seeing it a 'sexual awakening' and 'that never did me any harm', so I will do it to others, rather than recognising it as harmful behaviour.

I am not saying that this applies to Fry, I don't know what goes on on his head or if he has said anything that suggests he is like this.

To bring it back to him though, I can remember him doing an interview and saying that he didn't think that women liked sex because if they did they would be cottaging or shagging strangers in graveyards, and because women are not as promiscuous as some gay men, that was proof we hated sex.

So after that, I stopped thinking that Stephen 'Famous women expert' Fry had anything clever to say about anything.

'there’s no storm like pubescence and no port like a pretty boy’s bum'

Thats a quote from his autobiography.

I seem to remember reading online there was an incident involving him, a younger lad and a snooker table. But where it was I know not. He has since become a snooker fan so searching for his name and snooker is no help.

Rik Mayall never forgave him for that.

This about sums me up, too.
I feel like he’s a fraud; acting the part of the jolly old national treasure but being completely different behind the mask.

As I said on the Huw Edwards thread, Stephen's husband looks very young. You'd be forgiven for mistaking him for a teenager in pictures like this...

I've been trying to find the thread on X but can't at the moment - someone had compiled a list of tweets, comments, and links to articles/work by Fry that highlight the fact he's problematic when it comes to his sexuality/liking young men, etc and potentially dodgy views on p-d-files etc (like Tatchell). When I saw it laid out like that it was a massive red flag.

From Rik Mayall's autobiography.

Mad to think that Stephen Fry went missing at the same time as Richey Edwards.

Glad I'm not the only one who can't stand him, the smug misogynist bastard. Didn't he sort of defend paedophilia once too?

Actually, I think it's this I'm thinking of: https://www.archive.is/oldest/https...comments-abuse-victims-self-pity-charity-mind
As a childhood sexual abuse survivor, I remember this well. I was disgusted with him. Before this, I thought he seemed like an OK person - I wasn’t a massive fan of his or anything, but I didn’t dislike him either. Since those comments, I cannot stand the man.

Never been a fan , think he's an oddball. Bet hes a right old ' luvvie' . With all the money he's got, why wouldn't he fix his wonky nose it looks bloody stupid. Think he thinks it makes him look endearing, or something. It doesn't.
He’s definitely getting more slobbish as he gets older.

Sandi T made QI so much better!

Same! Back in the 00s I loved him. He was a very early adopter of social media; one of the first celebs to really embrace Twitter IIRC.

The funny thing about Twitter at that time was how revolutionary it was. Celebs really did use to have an air of mysticism about them. You didn’t hear about their lives and inner thoughts unless they did an interview somewhere.

The problem was, it ruined the mystique and made you realise what dicks some of them were. Stephen Fry having regular tantrums and flouncing off was the #1 example of this for me. I unfollowed him such a long time ago… does he still do it @Metropolis?

I heard years ago that he liked young boys from freinds in the business. The mental breakdown or bipolar event was over something he'd done & was going to have a whistle blower spill the beans about it so he panicked and disappeared.

SF always maintains that he did a runner because the stress got to him and he had a bit of a breakdown iirc.
Reading these posts though makes me think he literally may have been on the run.
I seem to remember that he’s done that before - think when he was in his teens he stole a credit card and ran into hiding.
Plus SF always says that RM never forgave him, and kind of presents it that people didn’t sympathise with his mental health issues.
But perhaps the truth is a lot less palatable? Maybe RM knew exactly why he ran?
Probably not fair of me to speculate but Fry just seems such a deceitful and duplicitous character.

He has that smug arrogance of Peter Tatchel doesn't he? He thinks he can say things out loud and can get away with it because he's so revered. They get off on it I'm sure.

Yep. You just know he’s a total cunt in real life.
