I know a couple of Romanians and my son worked with some in hospitality.
They absolutely despise the Roma. They are also embarrassed by them and feel they will be affected by negative misguided association.
Perhaps a lot of this hatred is born purely from racism, perhaps there’s an element of genuine distaste about how they choose to live their lives.
Either way, the local UK population is expected to wholeheartedly embrace the new community but the new community is not expected to change behaviours that led to them being despised in their country of origin.
I’m really not seeing how that’s expected to work.
Ok, integrate and assimilate, fine, but then that’s wrong too, as it’s ‘wanting to change the culture’.
I’m being a bit judgemental in my language, but I’m not sure how I can tone it down and still get my point across.
