I’d be interested in her perspective as to where the line is. If you’re an “influencer” you must accept your job is to get people’s attention in order to influencing them into buying products.
You cannot really control whose attention you get. You must be aware that not everyone whose attention you get will like what they see.
So if you accept that, you must also accept they have a right to voice their opinions.
As an influencer, you can object to hearing those opinions and you can choose to block them. But you can’t deny people’s right to express them in any capacity.
I find it fascinating that when they’re getting positive attention which they can capitalise from they consider it a profession and an industry. But when they get negative attention (and it doesn’t even need to be abuse or harassment, it’s simply the attention) it’s trolling and bullying.
People form opinions. Good and bad. The only difference here is influencers have a lot more people with an opinion on them coupled with an opportunity to hear those opinions
If I were an influencer (never in a million years) I would be creating an effective boundary between my personal and professional life and would not be posting anything I wasn’t comfortable with people having an opinion on.
It is also possible to remain anonymous (scouse ma, Steph at first etc) but if you’re making the choice to allow the world in, you surely must accept all that goes with that
