Yeah it makes sense, they are allowed to do a canteen and get stuff from there. You would maybe think that tin lids could be used to make a weapon quite easily but guess it's not practical. Exactly, it wasn't like it was a knife so not sure what he could claim for... Let's hope he gets duck all.

I had assumed that a Cat A prison with violent offenders wouldn’t allow things like that to be in the cells. Surely it’s just asking for trouble!

There’s a reason why that’s a prison special, it’s easy to access.
It has shown there is a price on his head/clout to be gained from attacking him. This was a well-planned operation! Not a spur of the moment thing. There will be others also hoping to show him you don’t batter little girls to death.
Criminal injuries compensation won’t pay him compensation because they take the victims criminal record into account.
I hope the guy that did this doesn't get extra punishment.
They definitely will but hopefully they’re lifers so it won’t really matter to them to get another sentence

In all seriousness if they're in for a long stretch for 'in our opinion' a nasty crime then they're not going to stop & any repercussions aren't going to give them sleepless nights.

My partner told me he received no tinned goods in prison. Everything was stored in the kitchen. So unless they worked in the kitchen or knew someone who did they couldn't access a tuna tin. Weapons can be made way to easily these days out of basically nothing. Kettle and sugar will always be there, that's a given.
I posted before about Tony Hudgell's father being attacked by fellow inmates with tuna tins in socks and losing 12 teeth. A quick Google shows other cases of tuna tin weapons, including a prison officer being attacked. They are clearly easy to obtain.
Maybe in England but my partner said he only got plastic tuna tins and he can't remember having lots of other tins. Canteen is more about sweets, rice, noddles etc things you can make with a kettle to snack on.
I think anything like a tin - which is hard, and has sharp edges when opened - must just add to the work and the danger posed to staff, let alone other prisoners.

I tried to post it here but it seems the filters blocked it - if you look at recent prison ordering lists, there's a long list of groceries you can purchase including many tins. You can even get razor blades (although I presume these are somewhat supervised or locked up!)

Basically anything at all is easy to obtain in prison if you know the right people, despite the best efforts of the prison officers and police. Think of all the times you see photos/videos from inside clearly taken on mobile phones, the many reports of prisons having rampant active drug problems including prisoners coming out with habits they didn’t have before, all the articles recently about the issues with drones.
Bearing all that in mind, whether or not the tins are supposed to be kept in a secure area or the kitchen only or whatever I’m not surprised it’s relatively common for prisoners to have them and use them as weapons.

I don't even understand how these two went to sleep knowing that little girl was suffering and slowly dying

This article shows the prisonor that attacked him. His crime is horrific in itself.
