She apparently got turned down for a collab they were meant to be doing together last year (no surprise given the homophobia) and she’s had issues since.

Exactly! All this they/them balls is 100% attention seeking - by those who apply it to themselves and those desperate to jump on the 'you got it wrong HATE CRIME' bandwagon.
Honestly Bowie was doing all this half a century ago but the huge difference is he had actual talent to back it up.
No idea why Sam Smith can't just be a gay man who likes wearing women's clothes, though I suppose there's no such thing as bad publicity.
I don't care what Sam Smith is identifying as this week, but those photos are about as sexy as a bucket of cold vomit.

I don’t think he ever publicly came out, apparently his mum wouldn’t have approved and because his main audience was women he was advised against it.
Several friends then outed him after his passing…
I don't know how true this is but I know a couple of people who move in similar circles to Sam and so they know Sam.
During the time Sam was pretty quiet and no one really heard much of them, maybe only on social media or a news story here and there, apparently something horrific happened to Sam and they've fallen in with the wrong crowd, some of which are known to be quite persuasive and over bearing.
I have also heard that Sam is struggling with a lot of things but because of the company Sam is keeping right now, there's difficulty in them getting the help they need and away from certain people in his life at the moment.
As I said I don't know how true all of that is but given recent events and how Sam is behaving I'd say there is quite a lot of truth in it. I'll try and get more information if I can.

That is rather sad if true.
He does give the impression of going along with what others have told him is a good direction (whether that’s management, stylists, or others). He certainly doesn’t look like he’s enjoying it or having fun with it at all.

I thought this was known when Luther was alive. But I might be mistaken.
However, whilst Barry Manilow has never actually come out, it's well known he married a few years back to his partner of many years. We saw him in concert not long after it was revealed. He still got screams and the general discussion was that it was lovely he had someone to share his life with.
Maybe things have moved on.
Barry came out back in 2017 a year or so after he married his partner of 40 years who is also his manager. As you say, no one cared and his fans still support him. I think if he had lived, Luther would have ended up doing the same after his mother passed.

I'm really interested to hear more about this. I feel sad that Sam has been through this. What happened?
For some reason I misread that as Barry White and thought “wow, he really kept that under wraps”.

I too love expressing myself in outfits that cut off my circulation and leave me with chafing and blisters. It's so liberating.
This would not surprise me at all.
Sam looks so uncomfortable in every photo I see of them. All the outrageous clothes and everything, and they just look like they’d rather be at home reading a book.
If i saw someone dressed like this and posing with intimidating stare like this, I’d run, to be honest. He looks uncomfortable.
I actually feel a wee bit sorry for him. He was always about his voice and his music, his actual talent. This is just horrible. I just don’t understand why this display is necessary to promote his music. It’s not fashion, it’s not original, it’s not creative 
And he won’t even be able to breathe in that get-up.
He doesn’t look happy does he.
