Whether she directly markets herself to a young audience the fact is she does have young girls/tweens who are massive fans. There is a woman local to me who does princess parties and she has also branched out to include pop stars, one of which is Sabrina. She modifies lyrics but essentially does parties for 6/7/8 year olds. Those young girls will see this but not understand at all.

I guess I'm in the minority here but I genuinely don't understand all the references to her "dressing like a child", not just in this thread but generally speaking everywhere on the internet rn.

I read an article yesterday referencing her "dresses with heart cut-outs" as though that's dressing like a child. Like yeah, a heart cut-out to show off her bits is definitely what you'd put a child in [very obvious sarcasm, just to be extremely clear lol]. I'm sure most people prefer their little girls to wear suspenders/garters with mini dresses too... Plus stripper heels. They're a child's favourite, no? [again, sarcasm, don't come for me thanks xo]
The ‘sexy baby’ thing is again, another disgusting purposeful choice by her and her team. Hearts, bows, pastels, babydoll nighties, white ankle socks are all things you’d associate with childish, innocent dressing, but Sabrina does it with a sexual ‘adult’ tweak 🤢. The fact that she is also very diminutive in stature (under 5ft I think) only adds to this. Her actions also lean towards this - her hand covering her mouth in that ‘oops’ pose again and again is very childish. You just need to go onto pornhub and look for the content that caters for men with that kink. Women looking like young girls and it follows the same formula as Sabrina with physique, clothing and actions. It’s disgusting and if you can’t see that, you’re probably as porn-sick as most men are.

Absolutely! She's very doll like and some men out there have a sick kink with that sort of thing

I'm not a fan of Sabrina at all (I'm really not into that kind of music) but obviously I've seen the discourse online and the main thing that's annoying me is the terminology being used if you don't like the art work. "Clutching pearls", "prudes" etc. People being called media illiterate. Having to explain that it's satire. Can you just not like something anymore without having to be told how wrong it is that you don't like it and all the reasons why you're wrong not to like it?

Tbh the picture reminds me of the Spinal Tap Album cover, Smell The Glove, which is very obvious satire. But then again I am 41, have watched Spinal Tap many a time but I feel it is a pop culture reference that would go over a lot of heads.

I get the point you're trying to make but I disagree. Individually? Maybe (though definitely not babydoll nighties which afaik have always been under the category of lingerie, no?) in their individual context but in the context of an adult woman wearing stripper shoes and a risqué outfit, I don't view it as childish innocent dressing in the slightest because context is everything. I also don't view it as a "sexual 'adult' tweak" because I don't associate those things with children when they're on a grown woman.

I've seen people say she's doing it purely to attract paedophiles which, let's be real, a paedophile isn't interested in a 25 year old grown woman, no matter how short she is.

I don't go on pornhub, nor look for that kind of content, that absolutely does NOT make me as "porn-sick as most men are". What a bleeping stretch lmaoooo (I actually wrote most of this without reading that last sentence otherwise I'd probably have just said "duck off" so...)

You’re wilfully ignoring that the clothing isn’t in isolation. It’s the entire package. Plus the things others have mentioned - the Lolita photoshoot ffs?!

Porn-inspired album cover shoots aren't even edgy or subversive any more. It's all been done too many times. I cannot see any irony or tongues in cheeks here, just a tedious, grim photo.

Sabrina has basically pinched her whole schtick from Angelyne, who was mostly active in the 1980s and practically invented being a self-promoting influencer. There were billboard posters of her up before she even released any music.

BIB - They aren't but they are interested in a girl who even though she is twenty-five, looks young because that's how twisted they are. Speaking of porn, the 'barely legal' genre is a perfect example of what I mean. You have women dress as schoolgirls and wear pigtails etc. They are all legal, but the people who get off on those films aren't looking at them as 18/20-year-olds and instead are pretending they are schoolgirls.

If she was catering to men then her audience would be very different. You only need to look at some Asian girl groups to see what their fandoms look like when they are marketed to this specific type of male audience

Some women find their sexuality and appeal to men empowering and that’s fine 🤷‍♀️ her appeal to teenagers comes from the fact that her music is popular as well

I grew up on late 90s and early to mid 00s R&B and Pop music. Is it just me or has music come to be a lot more sexualised? It was never perfect, but back then it was more about the voices and music videos were more creative, or if not particulary creative, they were simple and effective. Nowadays it's all about sex sells rather than pure talent. I dunno, as I say, maybe it's just me.

For example, this is a music video from Amerie in 2002. It has that iconic early 00s feel, and even though she's not fully clothed, she keeps it classy and simple.

Re the album pictures, etc. Bear in mind that this might not be her choice, it may be the label pressuring her into this aesthetic.

Either way, as far as children are concerned: children under 12 don't belong at pop and rock concerts, they shouldn't be allowed in at all. Parents need to say no to their children and stop being so spineless, as a teacher I see the results of this kind of parenting; the majority who say they are "gentle parenting" are in face just being permissive! Some things are only for adults, we all on this site most probably had that experience as children and accepted it. Not everything is for children, parents need to get a grip!

I wouldn’t say it’s more sexual, maybe because you were younger you didn’t pick up on what they were singing about. Eg some popular artists/songs from that era :

Boyz 2 Men - Ill make love to you
R Kelly (🤢) - too many to mention
Usher - nice n slow (a lot of hip thrusting in that video!)
Nsync - digital get down (about phone sex)
Britney - many sexualised videos
Xtina - genie in a bottle, dirty video
Mariah - touch my body
Beyoncé - naughty girl
Mya - my love is like woah
Sisqo- thong song

Even Amerie’s one thing could be interpreted as sexual when you really listen to what she’s saying. Of course as kids we’d happily sing stuff without thinking.

So many hip hop/rnb songs had bikini clad women in them (and that was the whole concept).

Re the videos, I think we just have so much more visual content now that we’re less impressed by music videos. IMO Sabrina’s videos are actually quite reminiscent of that early 00s era.

You have picked quite a random choice of video to back up the point. But personally I think it’s less sexualised. SC aside, growing up all I heard was “sex sells” whereas now women can do what they want.

Christina Milian Dip it low video is VERY sexual imo, literally writhing around in her underwear and that’s the first example I could think of without thinking about it too much. Christina Aguilera full stop - especially dirrty 🤣🤣 But yeah I think music / videos especially in RnB were quite gross looking back, loved them at the time though!

The thing is, my problem isn’t with her being a “sexy pop star” (I love lots of female pop artists’ music, so I’m used to it).

It’s that specific album cover, with the aggressive hair grabbing and the demeaning pose. There‘s nothing about it that makes it satirical.

It just reminded me of that one gag in the mockumentary “This is Spinal Tap” where they’ve got an album cover with a naked woman on all fours wearing a dog collar and sniffing a glove held out by a man titled “Smell The Glove”. In the movie it’s funny because everyone is outraged by the idea of it so they have to change it to an all black album cover instead. The sad thing about this is that this isn’t a joke (I was quietly hoping it was).

one thing has a whole verse about her meeting the guy at the door with just her high heels on so it absolutely is sexual. like you say, people just don’t “notice” or look back with slightly rosetinted glasses. 90s rnb was absolute filth! 00s pop just as much.

i find the sabrina convo interesting because she’s “sexy” in such a betty boop oops oh me?! gasp! way. her whole vibe is being a like a slightly unhinged polly pocket. i HATE the album cover because of the hair pull but some of the reaction to her in general is a little ott. plus she is very much in control in all her songs (completely unlike one thing, dip it low and others mentioned before which are just about servicing your man and being as hot for him as you can be).

For me I just hate that she over sexualises herself at the same time as infantilising herself. She is so desperate for male validation and everything she does reminds me of a 16 year old who just had sex for the first time and needs to let everybody know.

The lolita style photoshoot, the calling herself a little girl in a sexual way, the making her height part of her personality, the naming a song after a movie about a pregnant teenager who was groomed. She’s like Ariana Grande who also infantilised herself but on steroids imo.

“Oops me? But I’m so tiny, I’m just a little girl!” That’s the impression I get from her. I just hate it. Purposely trying to make yourself come across as childlike and sexy at the same time is just disgusting tbh
