Hi, I’m new and I would like to weigh in on Ruby. I have been following this thread for some time now, and while I am mildly disappointed in myself for procrastinating on a gossip forum (lol) I have at least been glad to see that others seem to be just as disgusted by some of her content as I am- now I know that I’m not being overly cynical! :’) This might be a bit of a long post, apologies in advance. :/

I see myself in Ruby and it‘s quite frightening—I consider her videos a sort of chilling reminder of the person I could easily have become, and every time they appear in my recommended I watch out of a sort of morbid curiosity (lmao) and feel so, so relieved and grateful that I was able to pull myself together, sort out my issues and put myself out into the world when I started university. I study English Literature (well, half English and half Classics) at another UK university, I love to read, I am introverted and tend to keep in contact with only one or two friends at a time, I have restricted and repetitive interests (I have ASD :) I know it has been suggested on this thread that Ruby might be autistic but I don’t think she is, from what I have seen), I used to be obsessed with studying and “productivity” (nowadays I just pursue my interests for however long I like, and I’m much happier for it), but (perhaps most importantly) I dealt with (an) eating disorder(s) for years. The speculation around Ruby’s “ED” has finally driven me to make a post.

I know that when I share my experiences I cannot really speak for anyone other than myself, but I did spend *lots* of time on ED forums talking to other anorexics/bulimics, as well as researching eating disorders, their treatment and the psychology of eating, and I know a couple of recovered anorexics irl. Ruby’s food-related behaviours are nothing more than a performance. I went through the ED motions in the same way that Ruby has purportedly done, albeit at a much younger age. I read any ED-related book I could find (I think I have read every memoir, multiple times :)), before seeking out literally any book that I could get my hands on which dealt with themes of food/meals/feats/starvation/illness. All the while I was reading this stuff, I was absolutely terrified that somebody would discover what I was doing. I made a separate google drive under a false name so I could save PDFs in secret; there was no way I would have allowed myself to be seen with the physical books, let alone log them on my public Goodreads! (Blatant attention seeking!) There was, at least for me, a horrible sense of shame surrounding what I was doing, I think because the idea of “anorexia” that I had been exposed to was that it was an illness driven by vanity and “wanting to look like the girls in magazines” (I hated this), and lots of other ex-ED-sufferers have admitted to feeling the same way about it all as I did. Ruby takes every single opportunity to share her fascination with food and starvation—in her videos she continuously shows us her notes for her Victorian module, and in a way that allows us to easily see that she is reading and writing about clearly dodgy themes. I am so ANGRY, firstly because of how stupidly, selfishly irresponsible this is (I know that this has already been noted in this thread), and because of how she is distorting the experience of suffering with an ED. I’m going to need to end this post and make a new one—this is far too long already—but she is clearly trying to posit herself as an anorexic while she has no idea of how HELLISH it can be. This is maybe slightly selfish, but I hate the thought that her videos might lead people to regard anorexia as an illness where you constantly read books about tea parties, sit curled up with a hot water bottle and eat little portions of oats and berries.

Just wondering if she’s posted anything/acknowledge what’s happened recently and the outcry from women regarding sexual assault? Everyone I follow from influencers to friends and family have posted about it but I don’t think I’ve seen anything from Ruby? Obviously she doesn’t have to post anything at all, just wondering
that would mean acknowledging there are other issues in the world besides bullying.

The thumbnail and title already rub me the wrong way. It doesn't matter if you read 5 or 150 books you read a year, if you love reading and books and you wanna call yourself a bookworm, just do it! This just stinks of privilege, not everyone can afford to do nothing with their life besides studying and reading. There's a lot of videos (mostly by booktubers) on how to fit more reading into your daily routine, and these people often actually have a job. Why would anyone take advice from Ruby, she literally has nothing going on in her life besides frolicking around the garden and playing dress-up... not very realistic for anyone above the age of 10, is it?

Also, why does this generation need tutorials for everything? "How to be a bookworm", "How to be dark academia", how about you try to just be?

I just want to say that I previously commented on Ruby's dad tracking her location, as at the time of me posting that I did find it kind of strange (probably because my parents never did that with me) but I'd just like to say that my opinion on the situation has changed now that I've had more time to actually think about *why* she might want to have her location shared.

-still seems to be pushing the 'state school holocaust memorial' vanity project to cover up for her greed

-produces the same boring daily routine videos that are actually filmed over a number of days

-contributes v little to her book club zooms while other people say intelligent stuff

-continues to wear clothes full of holes, creases etc.

-continues to exhibit some ED like behaviours, possibly to fuel speculation (especially as she reads this forum and we've discussed it a lot)

-still idolises Victorian life but can't get off her laptop and loves her mod cons (eg boiling water tap)

-hasn't heard of famous authors and doesn't bother to learn to pronounce things correctly

The “anorexic aesthetic” (🤢🤢🤢) of clean eating, baggy clothes, childlike looks and exercise is all “fun and games” till your attention span is shot to hell, you get osteoporosis, your hair falls out, insomnia and you start aging prematurely...

I’d like to see her keep up on her uni work when she’s physically and mentally exhausted 🙃

She needs to stop the ED baiting now. Dress like a child if you want but don’t cater to the ED aesthetic. Obviously have no idea what she’s potentially going through or not but damn, this stuff is serious. Enough already.

Came here to comment after watching the new video... but there is literally nothing to say. It was just so boring. She read a book and drank some tea and bounced on a trampoline a bit. Just... if that's a true routine and every afternoon is like this, and this is her life now...? It's like she's an inmate in an old folk's home or something. Or a nursery school. Nap time, play time, tea time, quiet time - all parcelled out in little time slots, perfctly bland and inoffensive. She's a prisoner of her own making.

OT but regarding Vee I was quite shocked
how many people seem to love her? Yes, she’s
better at portaying a more balanced lifestyle, her life-journey is impressive and I do appreciate that she actually wants to make a change but she has broken lockdown rules (probably more often than we know) and at the end of the day she is an influencer who’s calculating and presents a persona online.
Is the lifestyle she portrays that balanced though? So many of her videos are titled things like ‘major essay stress, writing 1,000,000 words in 30 minutes!!!!!!’ (I’m joking, but still ...) I get that she’s probably doing that to seem relatable but I honestly doubt that either Oxford or Harvard give you just a few hours to write an essay. The fact that she’s always posting videos like this suggests that she’s not that well organised, which is a surprise given that she’s now studying at a post-grad level. She’s possibly going to be entering the world of work/internships soon and no boss will be impressed by a ‘writing my business report in one hour!!!’ video.

I honestly don’t think that there are that many StudyTubers who are actually that balanced or a good influence. Maybe PaigeY who seems to have made a sensible decision to take a decent job when it was offered and seems to be growing up in a relatable way - I thought some of her recent videos about how she doesn’t love her job but she’s getting on with it are something a lot of the other StudyTubers could do with watching. Most of the others just seem odd, especially at the moment when a lot of the content opportunities that made them interesting aren’t there.

You are all too judgemental! #BeKind It's called SLOW LIVING. Cleaning your house does not fit under such aesthetic.

Lol. Didn't she ask her viewers to decide between these two titles on ig? Then why don't use the one they chose instead of changing it multiple times. I swear she's the contradiction of intelligence.
Honestly the more I watch studytubers, the dumber they all seem (not even just bc of this title incident) just in general. They all lack common sense in a big way.
It surprises me when I see comments from people on Rubys videos saying ‘omg seeing this makes me feel soooo lazy and unproductive😭’, and I’m like... really? I feel so productive compared to Ruby lmao. I study for about 1/4 of the time Ruby does and still get decent grades on pretty much everything.

I’m all for women being who they want to be and all, and being a housewife is fine, but Ruby seems way more ambitious than that? Also, the fact she follows housewife accounts, typically associated with cleaning and cooking, and then cannot clean or really cook at all is hilarious

What does that beautiful lounge have such awful sofas and chairs 😭 they have absolutely no taste whatsoever. Everything in the house is such a mish mash
I have always been completely amazed that a family with so much resources, both in terms of time and money, could somehow manage to make a house with literally so much potential look like a barn that’s being squatted by a bunch of random people who just dragged random furnitures from the sidewalk yet also like to hoard random expensive stuff as a hobby.
