The thing about this entire video that really grinds me is that she feels so sorry for the Brontes and what kind of literature they had to read. The Pilgrim's Progress is a classic for a reason. Centuries of people grew up on it and even in Little Women they played "Pilgrims" and their entire life referred back to it. The Brontes, the Alcotts, and everyone else loved this book and its influence on how to live a good life. Okay, Rubes, you are not Christian and it means nothing to you. But for those who were, which includes basically all the famous American and British authors of the 19th century, this book was treasured and even families who had very few books in their possession usually owned the famous five. A Bible, Book of Common Prayer, The Pilgrim's Progress, a book on gardening or sermons, and an almanac. If a book doesn't have a rich white girl living a dreamy life in a boarding school or with a new family (this says something about how she feels about her own family) , she doesn't like it. Her opinions just show how narrow minded she is and how restricted her reading has been over the past 22 years.

Why is she so amazed over a book on birds being highly descriptive and informative? That is what non fiction usually is. Especially a guide book. I mean, wtf is going on in her mind, or should I say that very small space between her eyes?

And omg the arm and the claw. Just stop gesticulating all the time. I want to tie her freaking arms to the chair. It gets worse and worse. Just another stupid video from a very stupid woman.

Ruby thinks that reading passages from books aloud with obscene eyebrow waggling is a substitute for actual thoughts on the book.

Even just from the "context" section, there's a total lack of understanding of the material she's basing her reading off of.

She speaks of Victorian England, but the books she's chosen *aren't* Victorian and weren't read by the Brontës during the Victorian period.

She talks of how expensive books were still to them even after they were published but fails to work out that Emily was dead within a year of Wuthering Heights' publication, and Anne died soon after. And, really, for Charlotte, certainly, her access to books did increase - as evidenced in the *numerous* letters between her and her publisher's reader, William Smith Williams.

She quotes a letter from Charlotte to her best friend Ellen, but clearly hasn't read any of Charlotte and Ellen's other early letters because if she had, she may have realised that many of these letters are full of pretension and over-exaggeration, with Charlotte writing in an overly formal manner that she discards as she ages. It's not the most reliable of letters to quote from.

Basic research needed!

  • There's a wolf howling downstairs and I think Ruby should sort that problem out before recording her video. 😂
  • Apparently the Brontes were genius because they captured emotion. Unless their contemporaries were all chatbots, this isn't a unique selling point.
  • I can't believe she just described Pilgrim's Progress as basic. 😐 I don't think it was written as a children's book either (?), though correct me if that's wrong. You'd think a literature and theology student would have a better idea of its context.
  • Ruby, stop trying to make Girlboss Cordelia happen.

Unexpected Unjaded Jade all of a sudden

I remember she was interested in that MA in history and manuscript sources when she went to look at Carroll's letters in Pizza Express Woking. If she ever did a degree in a history(-adjacent) field, she'd have to work with tonnes of this "outdated", "boring" reading matter, even if just to contextualise the manuscripts!!

Oh god she still pronounces ”cuckoo” as ”cuck you” 😂😂😂 I physically cannot 😂😂😂

also she doesn’t understand why so much of a bird book is concerned with describing what the birds looks like 😂 I mean it’s not like they didn’t have cameras in 1797 🙄
Cuck you 😂😂 This sent me omg.
'Ruby flew over the cuck you's nest' as the next thread title-

The Brontes' father was a clergyman, and they lived in an era that was known for being moralistic and encouraging people to live a 'Christian life', so it's natural that their reading material would be religious! I'm not a fan of The Pilgrim's Progress either - it's not my thing - but it was undoubtedly an important text. That said, I liked that she made an effort to explain her opinions on the books she read this time, and she feels a bit more authentic, at least in the way she admits she disliked things.

At least we know for certain which one she absolutely won't do... world literatures in English.

I’m sorry but it is so embarrassing seeing Ruby wear vineyard vines when in the US it’s associated with douchebag frat bros and rich old white people. I know she got it when she was in Boston but it’s just so out of touch to be wearing that when she’s talking about how people back then lived in poverty.

I'd guess one of these three. She doesn't seem to like pre-1700 literature (unless it's The Bible). Ruby's interested in the Victorian Period or later, but she's also mentioned American poetry and there's the Emily Dickinson thing, so maybe she'll apply for the American Studies course? I'm guessing this is what she meant by the note 'decide on course', i.e. she's definitely applying for English but there's a range of courses.

My guess is 650, 1550s or 1700s. Maybe the Medieval Period? they sound the most pretentious.

I didn't notice. Was too distracted wondering why she's dressed like a Benedictine monk.

I think 1550-1700, she has been talking about Shakespeare a lot recently and I looked up the name she was writing in her application and it seems to belong to this woman here.

She also appears to be working with one of the professors leading the course. Maybe I’m barking up the wrong tree though, idk anything about Oxford or how it works lol.

This is what pure happiness looks like. I don't know who of the two seem more authentic

Guys I need to unwatch this thread, @gossip_guy’s Ruby impression is becoming my default internal monologue. Someone said something incorrect at work just now and my brain immediately went “um ACKSHULLY” 😭😭
As long as you don't verbalise that way, it's all fine 😉

  • I'm less than 50 seconds into her video and she has already misused a word: 'if you ascribe to that'... I think she means 'if you subscribe to that'
  • She's workshopping her accent, heading into a Kate Middleton accent.
  • Pilgrim's Progress is 'boring'???? wtf
She's actually not literary at all. Not bookish. Not smart. She has 0 respect for literature and language.
When she reads out the passages of letters or other texts, why does she feel the need to lend some drama to it. Her eyebrows be going all over the place. Does anyone remember that Cadbury chocolate ad with the kids and the eyebrows? 🤣
