I went Ultimate Nerd and rewrote it. 😬:oops:

Elizabeth Strout is one of my favourite authors. I particularly love the endearing, conversational style of her Lucy Barton series which tracks the life of its narrator from small-town Illinois to New York City. The fourth book in this series, Lucy at Sea, is set in Maine during the Coronavirus pandemic. Lucy and her ex-husband retreat to their 'house by the sea' to isolate from the virus. At first, Lucy hates being away from the bustle of New York, but gradually she eases into her new life in the quiet seaside town. This story will resonate with a British audience too, as it manages to capture our shared experience at the height of the pandemic - from air hugs and face masks to the daily walks that gave us routine and maintained our sanity. This piece of recent history already seems distant, and it's interesting to look back and realise just how far we've come since the early days of the pandemic. I loved this book so much and urge you to read it.
I really appreciate your re-write. Personally I believe it was Mother Granger that wrote the original because I actually had a bit of an idea of what the text was about after reading the review. That is never the case with Roob's Reviews.

Yours flows a lot more pleasantly and is a smoother, less wordy read. Gets to the point. Captures the important stuff. Bet you haven't even read the text tho 🤣 🤣 Which goes to show, its not so difficult to write a review.

Found this on The Student Room, one reply calls Ruby a 'True academic with a love of English,' and I'm wondering if they are watching the same person as we are.
Its the bit where the person says 'i used to feel so [tit?] about myself' by comparing themselves to Ruby. Thats what pisses me off the most about Roob. She gets her kicks out of being smug and superior. Ugh.

This is so hard for me to understand because her study videos are so uninspired. How could anyone feel tit about themselves after watching Ruby just time-lapse scribbling in her notebooks? There's nothing there! I know I'm not the audience for study content, and I know that kids are impressionable and often lack discernment skills about things they see on social media but still...I don't get it. I mean, I don't feel tit about myself when I watch Ruby's current, non-study content. In fact, I feel pretty good, because at least my house is cleaner.

I mean, I totally agree with you but this is not the first time I have seen someone say they feel tit about themselves because of content that certain studytubers put out. Maybe it takes a kind of particular very young and impressionable person to look at Roob's vids and feel insufficient.

I don't understand it either. Her study videos are not motivating in the slightest. Her chatty flogs are a bore. Her art and craft bits are actual tit and her routines, what i eats etc are also...actual tit. Lol. I'm thinking these viewers are 11-14 years old. My study years are all well behind me and even if they weren't, there is no way I'd use any of her study tips. True lol when I watch her vids I feel better about myself too. That sounds mean but its true. 🤣

Holy tit I just looked at her Tik Tok.
In her latest tiktok, Ruby says that the character of Cathy annoyed her. And ends her video by unceremoniously DUMPING the book off her bed onto the floor like an ungrateful little B.

The time lapses and the sheer amount of hours she "studied" made it seem like she did a whole lot more than what she actually did, which we know was just copying notes to multiple places. All busywork, but if you're not looking all that closely it's easy to get the impression especially as a teenager that she's very productive. But in actuality if you're studying for that many hours, something is really wrong because you're probably not absorbing the material.

"Oiy hadn't rad it since oiy was THARTEEN..."

Looks like she's been on Tattle again - she's finally aged herself up from 12 for the first time ever! Happy Imaginary Barthday, Ryoobee! 🎂

Also she's completely lost the thread of what timescales she's pretending are happening or what she's read even by her usual standards.

This is 'Bwock One of TWANTEE TWANTEE THRYEE' and yet...

Untit798098led.png

Um..what? So book one is vlog 2 of 4, even though she's uploaded 3 other TikTok book vlogs featuring different books this year? And this is book one even though she's pretending she read 9 books before this in TWANTEE TWANTEE THRYEEE? Make it make sense.

Hi guys, I've been lurking here for some time and just wanted to say that it's refreshing to see people that didn't fall for the Rooby persona like i did in Higschool. Watching her and other studytubers was making my depression and anxiety a lot worse, and I was an undiagnosed autistic in a very demanding school. Obviously it was my choice to watch them, but I didn't know better then, really thought that I was a failure because I couldn't study for 8 hours a day and do milion ""productive"" things in a day. I really wanted to be them... but now I am so glad to be myself. I've worked on my mental health a lot, I have hobbies that bring me joy, I am on my way to finishing a master's degree this year and have a chance of starting phd next year... Obviously there is nothing wrong with changing courses, going to school later in life, not going at all, etc., but now I can see clearly who Ruby is... just an ordinary person, but obsessed with ""productivity"", making videos to boost her own ego and lying about hating hussle culture, Girl, you are part of the problem.
Aww that's brilliant! Well done for ditching the studytubers and doing your own thing. 🌟

. Bet you haven't even read the text tho 🤣 🤣
I haven't read any of Elizabeth Strout's books. 😂 But thanks for the nice words. 😝

Make it make sense.

The first video of Ruby I ever watched was the 14 hour study marathon. It didn't inspire me because all I could think of was: How can this girl comfortably upload such a video without worrying that this will make her the ultimate target of bullies? At my school, enjoying to study or working hard was seen as something to make fun of. It was cool to not give a tit about school. So when I first found out about the existence of studytubers, I was wondering how anyone could see them as rolemodels.
Which I think is sad. Leaving aside the very special cringe of Ruby, it should be possible to try to inspire others to study. I would have wanted to learn at school, but my environment was so discouraging. I'm glad that apparently not every school comes with that kind of atmosphere.

Was just about to say the same about Nick Cave. Definitely the Harry Potter song

Also she's dropped the D&G trousers from £83 to £68 lol (on Depop)
Such a random price for depop! Why not 80 or 65... 83 and 68 is bizarre.
Should be 20 quid second hand, though.

You'd think that someone "SYO KOIND" might donate any money from secondhand clothes sales to charity. Or someone who loves walking/running/yoga so much might find it a natural step to take part in one of those daily challenges for a month that raise money for a charity - Mother Granger appears to have done a daily yoga one for Cancer Research so why didn't Ruby join her?

The supposed passion for charity and kindness is the most disingenuous thing about her. She could easily dedicate a lot of her time to charity work and still have time to piss about writing her many novels (so that she never has to complete one and confront its mediocrity and inevitable rejection from publishers) and cosplaying as children.

Instead, she uses a young following to shill poorly looked after clothes at massively inflated prices. I know we all know this already here but it's just glaringly obvious yet people fall for her infantilised persona.

She does seem very tight with her money and others have said I really don’t understand trying to sell clothes when you reeeally don’t need the money. I’m very working class but I don’t even faff around with trying to resell clothes, I either donate them or give to friends, especially if they aren’t designer pieces.

It’s very obvious Ruby comes from a family that is the furthest thing away from poor yet she tries to hide it, i.e., references how she needs to budget as a student in past videos yet would go to Waitrose for her weekly shop😂 nobody’s expecting her to show her balance sheet every year but even so much of a ‘i come from a background that allows me to not have to work/worry about money like most students’ would suffice imo, I think it’s especially important given many of her viewers are 1) very young 2) often international so both categories aren’t really familiar with the uni system, and they may put unnecessary pressure on themselves to do better in comparison to someone who was fortunate enough to be born into a life of the best of everything. I really hope they’re aren’t kids out there who are beating themselves up because they can’t study like Ruby who was privately educated, had supportive parents, own room + own desk, and whose only sole focus was academics.

I never sell anything online, specially to strangers. I don't want to deal with difficult people. The internet is full of stories from people who try to sell stuff online. I always give stuff that's in perfect condition to charity shops or put a box outside so people can take something. Sometimes I sent books to a platform that gives me money in return. But they don't always need every book I want to give away. Thankfully, there are public book shelves (I really need to drive to one of them to put some books there). I feel much better to give clothes, household items, books or magazines away (to charity or just in a box outside). Why doesn't Ruby do something like that? I could of course make money selling some of my clothes I don't wear anymore. But, as I said, I don't want to deal with people. Getting money would be nice, but it is so much nicer to donate things. If you really need the money, that's different, of course. Rich people never give something away for free. That's why they are rich and stay rich.

Exactly this. When Ruby does attempt something charitable it's always performative and impractical. That time she wanted to send money to strangers on Insta? Putting money inside books in Waterstones?! Making a note in her planner to leave change in her pockets for homeless people? There are lots of ways Ruby could make a difference, but she always seems to ignore those options in favour of the most stupid idea.

  • Ruby has so much stuff and probably doesn't use half of it. Just look at the amount of clothes she's selling on Depop. It lists 109 sold items - the cheapest is only £3.50, but some are nearly £50. I'm thinking a car boot sale type of event, donating the money to charity. She could do the same with books that her family don't want to reread.
  • More fundraisers on her YouTube channel. Other creators do this frequently, so why not Ruby?
  • Donate a % of her YouTube income to charity and encourage other influencers to do the same.
  • Continue to advertise, but give the ad revenue to appropriate causes, e.g. if she's advertising a laptop, use the opportunity to support Laptops For Kids or a similar project.
  • I know Ruby's sister did a bike ride with her dad to fundraise. Ruby doesn't have to do her challenge alone. A long distance hiking challenge, for example, would provide new content and she could rope her family into it.
  • Ruby has lots of free time. Why not volunteer? There are honestly so many areas to choose from depending on her skills and interests. We have a local project involving gardens in primary schools. There's also a lovely & diverse group of people who get together to plant trees and flowers in urban spaces. There's befriending schemes for older people (I can imagine Ruby liking this sort of thing), mental health volunteering, food banks, community art projects. The list goes on. I've never understood why she's not involved with something like this.

Rolling my eyes at her new TikTok video. She's claiming to have already "read" 9 books this year. Looked at her Good Reads and sure enough...very short books and children's fiction strike again. Also I just don't believe she read all 500 pages of Spare.

100% agree, her “reading” makes me so irrationally angry, especially when she claims to want to do a Master’s degree in literature!

“Spare” is bumping her average book length for the year, but the font is massive and the language simple. So it’s not the same as reading a more challenging 400 page book.

I am wondering what she thought about Spare, I like to imagine that she was rather horrified reading about Prince Harry's frostbitten todger or do you think that she skipped the bits and pieces that are more adult themed 😂
