I think our of all the UK studytubers Ruby is the least grown up out of all of them, the majority of them came from a very wealthy background and were continually supported throughout their studies and uni applications all landing themselves in top unis (minus Jade). Alongside having the luxury of not needing to work alongside their academics nor needing to worry about if their degree will be able to land them a job or not.

At least with the likes of Jade and Holly they’ve travelled the world and have gained a lot of independence from doing such. Jack moved to Paris I believe which itself is a huge life change. Vee moved out and lives herself, Lydia seems to be enjoying uni whilst maiming a social life and as someone else mentioned, Paige is purposely carving out a financially stable career for herself and eve seems to be settling into life also.

Whilst none of them are perfect and their privileges have obviously gave them a head start in life against others, they’ve all at least made an attempt or start at growing up and becoming adults. Ruby just seems to have regressed into this odd childhood state becoming more dependent on her parents. She redecorated her room to be more childlike. Purposely presents herself in a youthful manner. Pitches her voice to a higher level in videos. Continually makes references to school and back to school content. Managed to bag a job in her old school to ensure she doesn’t have to venture into unfamiliar environments. Refuses to learn how to drive despite having the means to do so, because she knows it’ll mean she can’t have mummykins and daddykins driving her around like the 12yo she so desperately wants to be.

It’s sad and weird to witness. What’s worse I think is she never started spiralling this hard until she got into year 2 of her english degree, in her first year in philosophy and her first year of English she was acting appropriately for her age and looking back at videos she just seems more competent(?). I do wonder what was the trigger for her to start acting in such an odd way. I also think her parents are disgusting enablers simply encouraging her behaviour, they clearly cannot accept the fact that they now have adult children who have their own lives, so now they have the chance to baby Ruby again, they relish in it.

Ruby & Holly were always close together at the back of the pack with respect to maturity.
Ruby is having playtime in her parents van and cosplaying as a child

Holly is/was getting dicked down and talking about how she is craving physical intimacy

wonder what Ruby makes of it

Yeah I was wondering what Ruby was making of the latest from Holly. But intimacy seems to be a topic she only speaks about in disapproving tones.

In my opinion, Jade is the most well-rounded of the studytubers. Traveling, meeting people and living (i think?) quite independently of her family. I know the travel is all part of the weird university she has chosen to study at, but at least she is living the life of a young adult. Its kinda sad, but look at Ruby's vids from the start to her latest one. 90% of them feature her childhood home/bedroom at some point. Even for work, she has returned to the school she attended as a child. The RV belongs to her parents. She makes her cups of tea in her parent's kitchen. Can't drive. Holding on to the childhood dream of going to Oxford.

Funny anecdote: My 18 year old cousin was here the other day when I was watching the latest Roob video about the book. He asked me who is that? And as a joke I said 'the girl of your dreams'. He said 'eeeew she's like 13 thats gross'. I told him her actual age and he said 'no way!' 🤣

I agree with you. She started spiraling in her second (English course) year at uni. I think COVID was a major factor in her reverting back to childhood and just stunting her growth as a normal adult.

Her anxiety seemed to get worse at the start/during covid, she religiously kept track of the news/case numbers, she kept thinking someone was breaking into her uni house and would hide in the toilet, and then she finally went back to mummy and daddy's house and stayed there during multiple lockdowns.

She reverted back to acting like a child as a coping mechanism I bet. And you're right her parents enable her so much. They don't challenge her at all and keep her sheltered because she's their precious (favorite) daughter. I feel bad for her sister and would resent Ruby and her parents if I was Martha.

She's always been weird about growing up/getting older but covid definitely heightened that anxiety.

I appreciate that Jade is more adult, but to say she is the most well-rounded is such a stretch, I'm sorry. She's still a product of extreme privilege and a smug idiot who refuses to learn in a way that isn't insanely performative and teachable. The key difference is that she's not into age regression and travels away from parents. (albeit in a global pandemic)

Jade is the most delusional easily. Blinded by privilege and thinks that she's teaching people about menopause. Eve Bennett is probably the most well rounded - got a first, has friends and goes out, isn't afraid to travel alone, and knows how to balance YouTube and real life. Jade, Ruby, Eve Cornwell, and Jack are all idiots and wouldn't survive a day in the 'real' world outside of their upper class studytube bubble.

Yeah I think you're right actually...lol. I was probably too generous with my words there. Jade is clinging to 'casual magic' like Rooburt clings to childhood. 🤣

Maybe most well-rounded title should go to Eve Bennet? The study tubers are an obnoxious bunch.

I don’t find Ruby’s lack of wanting intimacy a real bother, honestly. I know a lot of other people in the same boat. I don’t think it’s a lack of maturity with intimacy, but more of a fear of sex / confronting her sexuality.
I know speculating on someone’s mental health isn’t a good thing to do, but to me it’s pretty clear that Ruby is neurodivergent and for a lot of neurodivergent people (as myself) dating & sex isn’t really running the show as it is for a lot of people in their early twenties. It can be uncomfortable to hear about ppls sex lives (especially if they are friends) but I doubt Ruby is friends with any of the sixteenth influencers anyways.
As long as she isn’t shaming people for having sex, I think her lack of having intimacy is fine imho.

Oh no, my greatest fears have come true! She's reading The Brothers Karamazov on her latest Instagram story...

I don't know if I should be excited about the upcoming hilarious Goodreads review or dread the inevitable massacre one of my favourite books will suffer...
It's interesting that many people on here seem to be into (classic) literature (myself included). Maybe that's how some of us discovered Ruby. I'd love to have another thread or separate forum to talk about books.

I think it is how a lot of people found Ruby tbh. I also think a bunch of people hopped on when the whole dark academia / Donna Tartt thing was super trendy during COVID. I admit I fell into her “academia” trap when one of her dark academia vids became popular. I’m not a “literature” person though (like RC Waldun, Jack Edwards, etc) but as a history student I found a lot of her stuff fascinating at first (the moldy trunk arc was what really got me to seek out if anyone else was taking about her :ROFLMAO:)

Its how I found her. She ended up in my Recommended on YT. Then I went down a studytuber rabbit hole while I was recovering from an injury to my lower back. This continued during Covid. Then I googled something about Ruby and found this forum lol

When I want to watch something serious and relaxing about books, I watch a channel called Uncarley. She's a bit more chill and funny and doesn't just cover classic fiction.

Absolutely no bleeping way. I want to gatekeep Wuthering Heights so bad right now. She doesn't understand literature, the agony of the kind of love that Cathy and Heathcliff shared. She has reduced the torture of their feelings to a wandering in an empty yard and an almost-fail candle lighting clip. Nooooooooo. So mad. Somebody stop her!

She doesn't possess the rawness needed to LARP as Cathy. She recites the lines so bleeping politely. Where is the darkness? The despair? The pain? The simultaneous love and hatred?
She could never understand "whatever souls are made of, his and mine are the same". SHE JUST CANT

GET YOUR GRIMY PAWS OFF HEATHCLIFF AND CATHY

I read it at 14 and I think it permanently altered my brain chemistry.

I find uncarley so unbearable. She talks about the same few books all the time and is so sarcastic and clearly just copies phrases she heard on TikTok or something. She reminds me of Jack Edwards - everything is “unhinged” “a red flag” “if you like this book you have mental illness”. I think it’s so funny that she does stand up comedy, I imagine it’s super cringey.

The best booktuber I’ve come across (and one of the only ones who actually comes across as a lovely normal person) is a Canadian girl called Emmie. She’s really well read and intelligent, I definitely recommend her to anyone!

hahaha 🤣 She does come across as kinda witchy and sarcastic but I personally find that cheerful to have on in the background while I do things around my house. Small doses too, because the unhinged, red flag does get a bit cringey. I couldn't imagine going to one of her stand ups tho. That would be overload. For me its simple: she talks about books, she's kinda funny.

I'll try to find the Emmie you mention. Sounds like a solid recommendation.

Regardless of how we feel about Roobee and the quality of her videos, and in spite of the way she has ruined The Nutcracker for us, let’s at least be grateful she’s no longer using the music starting at 2:42 in this video:

I clicked fully expecting that "Smile...smile...smile..." song she used to used to soundtrack all her grimacing footage of her prancing around and it was so much worse...

I am a bit late to the party with the Wuthering Heights booklook but 1) that beret makes her look like the little mushroom dude from Mario, and 2) there’s some exquisite irony in her talking about desolation whilst filming herself in the junk-yard that is her garden.

Dear sweet Jesus that went on far, far too long.

Hated that song so much, I was always convinced that she played it as a mind-control song to make her grimace as she pretends that she loves learning and studying. It almost falls along forcing herself to grimace in the morning to boost her happiness as she did in a morning routine.

This music actually fits her better. It conveys the image of the cheerful, naive child who just can't help but dance around and love the world
