For a start the English teacher might not remember Ruby or might have even left the school and he may not even want the book or he might already have the book. I mean the excuse on why she brought the book for her teacher is laughable "I just thought he'd like this". So basically she is suggesting that she doesn't know what books her old English teacher likes but she will get him the book anyway.

I wouldn't get one leg in a pair of shorts I brought when I was 13Her wording fitting into shorts she bought at 13 as a tip for saving money / building a wardrobenow I’ll be honest I was one of those teenagers to young adults who didn’t change build or shape wise drastically so my clothes size stayed relatively stable meaning I could fit into most things for at least a few years even longer, but even then I would certainly not try / expect to fit into anything then that I bought at 13! what i also have an issue with is how blah she is when she says it as if “oh why yes of course it’s perfectly normal and everyone should still fit into the same shorts they bought at 13 years old”
