Re. her latest Instagram story - what on earth is a 'dark academia summer activity'? I'm so bored of the romanticised and horribly whitewashed aesthetics. Perhaps this is me getting old, but why not just enjoy the things you like rather than shoehorning your interests into an Instagram aesthetic?

(Regardless, Ruby's 'style' and aesthetic seems to be the complete opposite of a dark academia moodboard!)

I would suggest a Ruby drinking game for the next year where you take a shot each time she posts either a) a picture of the driveway from her bedroom window, b) a picture of a lit, dangerously wonky and drippy ‘candlestick’ (aaargh!) on her windowsill or c) a short video of her snuffing out said wonky, drippy ‘candlestick’ with a candle snuffer but I honestly think someone would die.

Dark academia summer activity = getting drunk out of your mind on absinthe and going into the woods at midnight to find an obscure mushroom that will unalive your enemies (i.e. academic rivals) without leaving a trace, but you run into them on the way there and decide to just unalive them right there and then, using the Pelikan 800 series fountain pen your estranged father gifted you for graduating top of your class and somehow didn’t demand to have back when you decided to major in art history instead of civil engineering.

She's taking us through it page by page at this point. Roobeee, your audience has read it. You're the only one that hasn't

okay at this point i’m convinced she’s trying to dress like elena handtrack or the sorts. Thing is, neither is elena dark academia, nor is ruby pulling it off

Is she really so bored and directionless she has to ask her followers for recommendations based on a meaningless label she attached to herself to figure out what she wants do to with her day?
Is this what she wants the rest of her life to be like?

It would be quite peck-yool-ya if Ruby has read any of the books she’s now recommending Do we think she’s actually watched beyond season 1 of Stranger things. It must be painful for her to see the kids growing up.

It’d probably be a better video if she showed things the right way round - just saying. ‘Wrongwayround’ is not the same as the Upside Down, Ruby.

I didn't really get why she was recommending 1984 for Stranger Things, it's a great book, don't get me wrong, but there's a lot more that come to mind first before I would go for 1984. Am I missing something obvious?

Yeah I wondered the same thing! Did Ruby just pick it cause they're both set in the 1980s?? Cause if so that would be hilarious

It's definitely just because she's gone 80s=Stranger Things. I can think of several books with similar vibes to Stranger Things that have a deeper connection than being set in the same decade.

I mean Stranger Things is quite explicitly inspired by Stephen King's books, particularly It. Like, it's not subtle lol anyone who's seen Stranger Things and has at least a vague idea of what It is about would recognize that.
I find it hilarious to imagine that she's never actually read 1984 and she's fully convinced it's set in the '80s (like, our '80s, not the dystopian 1984 Orwell imagined). I see no other reason to connect Stranger Things with 1984. And considering the weird way she's used 1984 quotes before it's quite obvious she's not familiar with it.

Maybe she was inspired by the Orwell quote "Stupidity was as necessary as intelligence, and as difficult to attain" cause oh boy she sure is succeeding on the stupidity front here

Just went to watch the video and it turns out Ruby did mention Stephen King. I haven't a clue why she thinks Nineteen-Eighty Four is connected to Stranger Things, though! It's a dystopian novel about control, totalitarianism, etc. What's that got to do with the themes of Stranger Things? Should point out that I haven't yet watched the most recent series, so maybe I'm missing something.

I haven't seen the new season either, maybe it's because it focuses more heavily on the Soviet Union and that's the connection she found with 1984?

That would make more sense. I hope there's a connection like that, otherwise Ruby just seems like a clueless person who's never read the book. Of course, both of those could be true.

lol I went on tiktok for the first time in months and was slapped in the face with this, it was AXTUALLY quite terrifying



Also, in case you were wondering. Glad to see she’s being productive and finally organising the months in order of preference, instead of spending her time on something silly like doing youtube or getting a job.
