I think perhaps the astrophysics comment is yet another example of how Ruby misinterprets words.

Bingo. She likes stars and space. So do I. Have some equipment and books on the theme even. It's "astronomy" at best. But "astrophysics" just sounds that much better on a surface level to her, doesn't it.

I stopped watching her because she’s so boring, probably over half her content is the same routines or studying. She’s fine to have as background noise every now and then when doing something but she’s really not too creative.

I agree, I have her on sometimes as background noise but she is an absolute wet blanket. Some of the stuff she says though I have to rewind to make sure I heard it right like in a couple of her routines when she said she was having ‘ceremonial tea’. WTF?! She is too twee for words.

I seem to remember Ruby's other gift videos that Martha is always very thoughtful with the gifts she gets for Ruby. But it's hard to tell under how many layers of irony Martha's gift giving is

What I think is interesting is how her and Martha grew up in the same family and turned out so different. Martha comes across as also very immature and clearly in an e-girl phase but also I doubt she skips around their garden and pretends to be a character in a children's novel and she seems quite a bit more independent than Ruby. So I'm not so sure it's all her parent's fault though I think they did certainly contribute to some of her childish behaviours.

Martha strikes me as the kind of person that people start to politely avoid in the second and third year at uni, once they realise that she behaves like that because there aren’t going to be consequences for her in the same way that they would be for them. She’ll end up hanging round with a group of people who are in similar positions, socially and economically, and her world view will be as narrow as Ruby’s.

This is badly worded because I wrote it quickly... but her not acknowledging or reckonizong her privilege when she makes these kinds of videos has real consequences.

Oh I agree, but the question is how can someone like Ruby recognise her privilege when to her, it’s normal? I agree with what you say and it irritates the heck out of me when studytubers portray 15 hour study days as ’normal’ - I know it’s edited (but I’d guess a lot of her followers don’t), but you just think don’t you have to work, clean, wash up, prepare a meal? But I guess when you don’t have to do those things, you can build this fantasy.

I just watched her video and there's a bit where she talks about receiving these mouse plushies which... fine, I get that they may be sort of collectives? But then it shows her mom playing with the mouse and saying "we're gonna have hours of fun aren't we Ruby" and this just bugged me. I don't know what it is exactly but this statement seems like something a parent would say to an 8 year old, not a 20 year old woman. I very often have to remind myself that I am, in fact, younger than Ruby, because when I watch her videos I 100% feel like I am watching somebody younger than me.

The mother is involved in all this in a really weird way and lives vicariously through Ruby's success. The mother's Instagram name has the fake last name "Granger" in it, for crying out loud.

Exactly - the recommended amount of time to spend on a full-time undergraduate course is 40 hours a week, and my head of department advised to treat your degree like a 9 to 5 Monday to Friday job. I had a job on the weekends during my masters, and at some points I was there Friday through to Sunday - I didn't work when I got home and would have been too tired to anyway. I avoided working weekends unless faced with an impending deadline that I was behind on, and came out with a 1st in my undergrad and a distinction in my masters but still spent lots of time just enjoying being at university. The amount of work she does is not necessary. I don't know anyone who works like Ruby, practice essays really aren't necessary at university in the same way that they are at A-Level, and of all the people I know who study English, the majority of them don't place much emphasis on critical articles for seminars, for example. Lecturers don't want to hear what someone else thinks, they want to know what you think. As others have said, its concerning that young people are seeing this as an example of how they should be studying. It's not healthy and can easily lead to burnout.

The video was nicely made but it could’ve been a standard essay video for all the detail she went in to
I write too and 10,000 in one day is absurd. Checking as you go along takes time so half that would’ve been impressive. Also ‘professional’ writers tend to write between 500-4000 a day (any quick google search will tell you this).
She could go into detail about how she writes but I’ve no reason to think she’s a good writer if I’m brutally honest (she doesn’t share it and her only self published book extract I read was...okay). She has self published so perhaps sharing her experience with that would be valuable.

She just seems obsessed with rural countryside middle class living and brings writing into that aesthetic. It’s also a huge privilege to have the time to write a book, I didn’t write for a few years at all because work was so emotionally demanding and I just didn’t have the energy lol

I’m concerned Ruby is heading for some kind of break down soon - as others have said, getting so fraught over time keeping on a weekend, including only having 10 mins for lunch, on a weekend, is alarming. TBH, I think Ruby wastes a lot of time doing “prep” and extra readings before actually knuckling down to do her actual set work... leaving her rushing to find texts in time. She would really benefit from speaking to someone at her uni to talk through her study worries.

Yeah what is she talking about? From Paiges comment I expected Ruby to have said she got a book on astrophysics not a bog standard NASA jumper that’s sold in primark so any old school drop out can buy one

As someone who lives in a country with regular power outages, it is infuriating to see Ruby romanticize "reading by candlelight". It ruins your eyesight, it's annoying and it makes your life so much harder. The fact that she has energy 24/7 that doesn't randomly cut off whenever there's a strong wind, or sometimes just because, yet chooses to turn her lights off. She is so stupidly privileged that she makes her life more difficult just for the sake of it.

Also to add onto this, it irritates me how she'll open her windows as wide as she can every morning because she likes the cold. She's not paying the heating bills, I doubt her family even need to pay attention to how much energy they're using judging by their wealth. But to regular people, heating a house is expensive enough as is, let alone in the middle of winter when someone leaves a window wide open just because they like to feel the cold in the mornings.

I think Ruby is naturally intelligent - I don’t think she’d be getting firsts at uni if she wasn’t to an extent. However there is a big difference between an IQ of 130 and 160 and I think it’s a bit arrogant to say that she’s got a genius level IQ if she hasn’t done a formal test for it!

I sometimes forget that Ruby isn't in a class like she was at school where everyone would've been similar to her. Now she's in university she's going to be in classes with people of mixed ability, and she still will be taking up so much of the module leader's time when someone else would really be struggling and need to ask an actual question, not just spend 40 minutes bragging and begging for praise. In uni i remember having to wait weeks to get a slot to talk to my lecturers because the high achieving students who needed little academic support were in there trying to discuss lectures further and run every thought and idea by their lecturer. I have a feeling Ruby's class may be in the same boat, and I imagine some don't like her because of it. She talks a lot when she films herself in lectures and seminars and although it could just be a coincidence that she only films herself talking, it seems to be excessive and wouldn't be fair to her classmates

Oh no, I study history and this definitely isn't a commonly done thing. I assessed a presentation where the group marched down the stairs to a song from Hamilton and it was really quite cringy. This just comes across as unnecessarily over the top and I can imagine it would be distracting from the actual content of the presentation. I can't imagine a lecturer giving extra marks for this.

I don't find it too strange. People often outgrow or simply move on from teenage friendships in their 20s. Ruby Rose still seems to be into HP but maybe not as hardcore as before and youtuber Ruby doesn't really focus on that as the main interest in her life either. They probably ran out of things to talk about, one outgrew the other and they fell apart. I hope Ruby's friendship with Blakeney is going strong though, they seemed to be getting along well.

I haven't watched the video yet, but if I was in her tutor group, I'd be super pissed if she was taking up valuable time. You can always tell the difference between the students trying to clarify something, or discuss their take on the matter, vs the ones that are after an ego stroke and praise from the tutors.

In my previous university, going over the word-count like that would be penalised, no question.

And just because it's the festive season and I'm feeling extra ranty, I hate the culture of people opening their results 'live' (I bet most of them don't). It's a really harmful practice. Getting my A level results is tattooed in my mind, it was a very stressful day (especially when daytime TV would be like, "Here is a 7 year old with 5 As at A level."), doing this stuff on camera is for the benefit of their egos.

She's only writing this book to get credit and praise for doing work. That seems to be the only reason she does any work, whether it's personal or for uni, and why she films it all. She wants people to be suprised and shocked and say "Wow, Ruby! That's amazing, good work! You're a great writer." It's concerning how much she does for praise, almost like she wants the attention too whilst claiming to be a meek introvert. I think her obsession with word count and numbers (i.e. 15 hours of studying, 10,000 words in a day) is just so she can schedule herself even more. She could set herself a strict goal of writing 3000 words by 10am and would have to reach it or the world would implode. It's also so she can show off how much she's done. If someone asks how the book is going she'll know exactly how many words she's written and how long it's taken. I really think she's motivated by her word count though, rather than the quality of the book.

Her videos are getting boring, the routines change every time and in every video she pretends she sticks to her routine strictly and drinks her favourite tea every day but then posts a different one a few days later. I think she likes to stick to filming routines because she can film herself doing work and shock people with how long she spends sat hunched over a desk doing unnecessary studying.

Her health is quite worrying now. Her eating habits are all over the place, she doesn't even mention drinking litres of water every 5 minutes now. She wakes up far too early and does too much work (in the freezing cold) to be surviving on small portions and it's showing in her appearance. Also her reaction to the cold may be because she's not healthy enough to regulate her own body temperature. She's sat by a radiator in her room when at her desk so surely she can't really be as freezing cold as she makes out to be, unless she's unwell.

She's got a history of misinterpreting words and phrases and her incorrect obsession with dark academia shows this. She's very much a cottage core light academia person but light academia doesn't fit her aesthetic of an intense obsession with academics, mysterious and incredibly intelligent characters (who she bases herself on) and hiding away from everyone else because they just don't understand these characters. Her immaturity shows with how she wants to align herself so much with this image of herself she holds in her mind. Just like her obsession with becoming Hermione Granger. Soon she'll change her surname to Ruby McDarkacademia.

This book is going to be a mess though. Even from the small amount she read in the video it seems like all her other pieces of writing that include far too many cliches and adjectives and has clunky sentence structure. She's likely better at writing essays than stories. If stories are really her strong point though, I hate to think what her essays are like.
