I know of a murder in my family that is basically the worst kept secret as most people know.
My great grandmother murdered her husband, took on a new man who basically stole his identity. She told her children he was thier father, then went onto to have a few children by him (my grandmother being one of them). She apparently buried him somewhere on thier property/land in Marlow Bottom, Buckinghamshire. One of the children from the murdered husband was given a map to where the body is from her mother but destroyed it so as to not bring shame on the family. One of the siblings however did report it to the police and their was dig in the property but nothing was found so has never been proven or solved.
I have an interest in criminal profiling and forensics, so naturally this bizarre tale is nagging at me! I can't belive she got away with it! Even in the pictures of the family you can tell the man is different than the first set of children's father!

If Lucy L is found guilty of killing those babies I will be absolutely fascinated to find out why or how someone who presents as 'normal' as her could do such a thing.

The other murder that gripped the nation was the Joanna Yeates murder about 9 years ago in Bristol. The press were like savage dogs trying to pin it on the weirdo Landlord when all along it was the pervy neighbour, & not only that her body was found Xmas day....how can her parents ever have a joyous Xmas ever again...😢
And that was actually quite a straightforward case albeit terrible. But it was Christmas, she was a blonde architect IIRC who had vanished while her boyfriend was away. Weird neighbour, odd looking, eccentric landlord and then there was the missing pizza!!!

But it's weird how some crimes capture the media's attention yet others....

A prime example of this is discussed in Paul Britton's book, The Jigsaw Man.

The murder of Rachel Nickell. A young blonde mum who the press described as a model (not so sure about that but....) who was murdered in a very public place, Wimbledon Common, in front of her young son who was not touched by the killer.

Samanatha Bisset, another pretty blonde mum, who was on benefits IIRC and dabbling, although not very seriously, in escorting, was murdered in her council flat along with her four year old daughter, Jasmine, in a sexually motivated, carefully planned attack. If you've read the details, you'll never forget them. Genuinely, genuinely horrific.

Rachel Nickell's murder was headline news for years. Samantha Bisset barely got a mention. In fact, the lead detective complained to Paul Britton that he just couldn't get the press interested. Chances are unless you've read his book, you've probably never heard of her.

Yet they were both murdered by the same man, Robert Napper.

I’m thinking about the Lucy L case a lot. Obviously we don’t know the full picture but what made them suddenly suspect her? I understand the death rates on that unit started increasing but imagine if that was just a coincidence and she is innocent? I don’t know, it’s so scary to think being in the wrong place at the wrong time could lead to this. Then on the other hand if she is guilty, what on earth possessed her to do such a thing? She seems so normal and apparently loved her job.

What is everyone's initial thoughts on the Sarah Everard? I know there is usually more coverage on missing women of white British origin in comparison to other ethnicities and genders but it's one of the headlines in nearly every newspaper. Makes me think that the police think they have a murderer on their hands. I'm not familiar with London but apparently where she was walking is know to be rough and dangerous at night, would she have known this?
I can’t stop thinking about this - she is friend of friends / people in my professional network and I live locally so it’s hitting close. That could have been me or any of my friends.

Personally I wouldn’t have walked through the park or walked that route alone late at night - but I’m a nervous person. A lot of people I know would have. Also if she took the main road, It’s well lit and busy (though can’t comment if it’s less so now becuase of lockdown). I also find the narrative of “she shouldn’t have been walking alone” which is popping up really unhelpful and infuriating. Women should be able to walk around alone without the fear of harm (but that is a whole other issue!)

What I’m also struggling tounderstand is the lack of CCTV. We’ve been led to believe our entire lives are on film so the fact that they can’t pick her up is so strange to me. The police have been searching the two commons (Clapham common and brockwell park) ive heard and also going door to door in the area and appealing for doorbell or dash cam footage.

I am really hoping and praying she comes home safely but every hour that goes past just makes me feel less and less certain that Will happen. Herpoor family and friends - I can’t imagine the feeling ofnot knowing what has happened to your loved one. The whole thing is sickening and I just hope with all my heart she is unharmed.

It’s not murder related but I had the flu a few weeks ago and got obsessed with 60 days in. The first season is on Netflix but I watched the rest of them online and I’m hooked 😂

it’s so interesting

I’ve always been against the death penalty - no matter what the crime. But I do find it very interesting, and watch every DP documentary I find.
It costs millions to execute somebody and usually takes around 20-30 years. It is cheaper to keep them a prisoner.
Revenge is not justice either. You wouldn’t rape a rapist or steal from a thief.
It is especially not ethical to execute somebody that does not have mental capacity, whether MH or learning disability. The American justice system is wild & def do not follow these guidelines they are meant to follow. You just have to look into Aileens case to see it. The woman was not well at all.
Being against the DP does not mean people are sympathising with the perpetrator either. A lifetime in an American prison is not pretty.

Has anyone else been watching the channel 4 undercover policing :hunting paedophiles? I have a strong stomach but both programmes I have found difficult viewing. I do not know how these undercover detectives cope with seeing such horrendous images on a daily basis. They would haunt me. As usual for the makers of this show - they have handled this topic brilliantly. There is no sensationalist tones to the show at all.

This was a particularly horrible case.

A true psychopath IMO so grateful they got him so early because the thought of him roaming free as an adult is truly horrific.

He gives me vibes of the worst of the worst (Ian Brady, Robert Black and the like).

The fact that he had to suppress laughter when hearing the worst of the evidence in court is just awful.

I know he has a 24 year sentence but I hope he is never released.

Alesha's mum is amazing such a strong lady. To think she found out about her daughters death from a facebook post is bloody horrific.

My friend got a call from his boss one day, he said I won't be in to work today as I have been arrested for murdering my wife! As reasons for not coming into work, this ranks highly.... Sadly they were having marriage problems, and were having a domestic and he pushed her and she fell over and banged her head and died. He got 8 years for manslaughter and was out in 4. It was all over the UK media at the time.

I read the Serious Case Review and it made me think about this differently.
The older boy had started sexually assaulting other kids including the little sister and the next eldest was getting obsessed with porn. Sarah asked and asked for help from social services but she got more ans more scared she had made her kids monsters. She had been sexually abused as a child and she couldn't stand to see it again.
Really really difficult read.
i always read SCRs - you can find them on the child services pages of county council websites. They are not an easy read but if you have an interest in the origins of crime they really help build a deep understanding of the dreadful lives some people lead.

The Ellie Butler case is a case i can hardly bear to think about. At the time I went far far too deeply down the rabbit hole of involvement - i was tracking social media, past conviction reports, live trial reporting, web sleuths.

I had a personal connection in that we lived in the local area and my stepdaughter went to the same primary school as Ellie.

Such a beautiful sweet girl.

Other crimes that have stayed with me over the years are Daniel Pelka, which is a case i can't think too deeply about - I cried nearly a whole weekend thinking about that poor boy.

One particularly crime that isn't very well known was the murder of a poor little girl called Tiffney Wright who was starved to death above the pub where her parents lived. I honestly cannot bear to think about how many hundreds of abused and neglected children there are right now - especially in lockdown, they are hidden away.

I find real crime and the causes of it fascinating so often it begins with the criminal themselves having had the very worst possible childhood.
