Thanks so much, this thread has helped me so much! Using lots of positive reinforcements but sometimes it just feels like he’s not taking anything in. I keep telling myself one day we’ll look back and it’ll seem like forever ago it was so hard so it’s reassuring to know this will be the case!
How old is ur cockapoo? Is it a boy? I’ve got a boy cockapoo he’s 2 years old in December..Omg he was a real nightmare for us for ages ..He’s finally getting better now ..He can still be a handful tho ..He gowls at us ..Which he is growing out of …..

Not sure how old yours is but definitely recommend training ASAP! Not for the tricks so much but just the concentration and focus on you. My Cockapoo was an absolute bloody nightmare, frankly none of us could stand her for weeks but she was a new dog post-training! She found a new respect for us as her owners I think, it taught her who was the boss and what she needed to do to get praise. She still has her moments (now 15 months) but it does get better I promise. Hang in there it’s worth it I promise x

He is 10 weeks. Obviously he’s still so young, he’s not allowed out so I’m hoping when he’s allowed out next week it will be a bit easier as we can go walks to burn his energy. Did anyone notice a difference at this stage or not really? 🤣

I haven’t booked any puppy classes but we’ve been looking into it. The issue is loads have set days every week and I work shifts. With the training we’re doing in the house he is learning and I can see an improvement but I definitely am going to take him to puppy classes.

We have both been getting puppy free time which definitely helps! I’ve been trying to find the best toys to keep him stimulated while he’s confined to the house. We have loads of chew/rope toys, hide and treat mat, kongs, lick mats, snuffle mats. Are there any toys anyone would recommend?

Can’t thank you all enough. So helpful and it’s great to get first hand experience 💕

Look to see if your vets hood puppy parties, will help with socialising

Hi lovely are you aware (apologies if you are) that puppies should only be having very short walks or it can affect their bones. I know it’s tempting to ‘tire them out’ believe me I’ve been at my wits end with one of my girls and I bred her she came out screaming I should have known at that point! But a very young puppy should only be having 5 mins per month of age up to twice a day so 15 mins max when he’s 12 weeks.

For teething I use frozen carrots alongside toys a lot for them to chew on, I’ve currently got 4 5 week old puppies so am also in the thick of teething here!

Oh I never knew that, thank you! I’ll try the carrots too, thanks so much. Good luck with this stage too 😊

If you have a garden there is no reason why your puppy can’t go in the garden

We do have a garden but it’s fairly open, so I’m a bit worried as foxes/cats can pass through

Based on things I’ve read I think he’s definitely overtired, but I’m not sure how to encourage him to sleep more? My house is quiet so there’s nothing really riling him up but he just has so much energy

I had a few weeks of thinking I’d made the biggest mistake ever, I would literally sit on the living room floor crying because I never had a single second to myself. I knew that if I gave her up, despite considering it numerous times in order to save my relationship (I chose the dog) and actually sleep again - I stuck with it. Best thing I ever did. To echo everyone else here (who were literally my saviours during this period) it gets better and is so worth it. In a few weeks time there will be another poster with the exact same story as yours and you’ll realise how far you’ve come and be able to offer that first hand advice. Stick with it, it’s all worth it x
I needed this so bad as I’ve sat and sobbed. We’ve had our since the weekend and I just can’t bare to hear her cries on a night. My husband has gone down, ignored her but she’s now gone to sleep. You don’t know if you’re doing the right thing, what to do for best, and I’m honestly like what have I done 🥺

Weirdly enough, my cockapoo loved the pub! There’s so many smells, different kinds of dogs, humans, kids and I think it really helped her social skills. I’ve known people who don’t take their pups out in these social situations but it really turned a corner for me, it takes a good few tries because she wanted to play with everyone but now she’s so comfortable.

not sure if you’re crate training, but another tip from tattler is make sure that their crate is their bedroom and safe space. I would never go into her crate or try to handle her whilst she’s in there, that way she knows if she doesn’t want to play or is fed up she can go in there and won’t be bothered. I locked her in at night for the first couple of months but now she just sleeps on the sofa - but I would definitely recommend crate training - she loves it.

Ohhhh I need to vent. I picked my puppy up today (well hes a year old) from his daycare to be told he can't return.
Long story short, the owner of the daycare had her kid sat on the kitchen counter (toddler aged) with a snack and my puppy (labrador) ran up to the kid, stole the snack and cut the kids finger with his teeth.
I'm absolutely mortified that he managed to do that and feel I've let him down in some way by not training him properly 😭
Does anyone have any advice on stopping him from doing this? He's absolutely fine with myself and partner at home, doesn't beg, doesn't snatch our food and I've never known him do this before 😭

I think it’s unfair on you, why would someone running a doggy daycare have a toddler especially with food anywhere near the dogs

Totally agree with the above comment! What the hell is a child doing with a snack at a doggy daycare.

Absolutely none of that is your fault. Blame sits entirely with the daycare person for putting both the toddler and the dog into that situation. Massively irresponsible of them.

Thanks everyone. The more I think about it, the more frustrated I am that he was put in that position. If he'd have bitten the kid, I dread to think what could have happened, especially as there's other dogs at the daycare with him. They mentioned it's not a good fit for him now due to his consistent issue with food. Yet it has never been mentioned before.

I'm actually kicking myself for not asking more questions when she brought him out to me. Just about where they were, where my dog was and how he got to the kid. Were there gates up or areas for the kid to eat without any dogs around?

Just makes me sad that him and the toddler have been set up to fail. I'll certainly be working on him not going after food and being in his bed every time we eat now though.

what a silly mother putting a child in that position and not fair on your dog. If you want to do doggy daycare it’s got to be set up right, especially if you’ve got children. Neither your dog or that little boy should’ve been put in that position. I have two dogs and a three-year-old the dogs are not allowed in the room while she eats and when the dogs eat, she knows not to go near them and they have their own personal space. It’s basic dog management. I’d also want more questions answered was the child on the worktop did the dog jump up and grab it, it sounds like it was just a genuine mistake on your dogs part probably saw the child as an easy option to get food. Like you say though he obv does need a bit of extra training on that side of things we all know labs love their food.

Yet another prime example that it's not the dogs fault but the owners or in this occasion the daycare owner!! So sorry this happened to you @AladdinSane 😢 but its not your fault your pup should not have been put in that position in the first place xx

Don’t be so silly, the amount of times I get children asking to stroke my pup and I always say, she’s very gentle (which she is) but you never know. It was down to the daycare people. It’s also incredibly unfair on your poor dog. Find somewhere else x

Edit: by that comment I mean that if the daycare owners were willing to put their child in that position then that’s not your issue. They’re animals.

If anyone is interested, I just bought a camera to watch my pets on if I wanted and more so for when I get a dog hopefully next year. The furbo 360 cat camera it’s usually £208 on Amazon but they have a voucher code for £63 off and then if you then put ‘360CATCAM’ in the voucher box once your in the payment page it brings it down to £41.50
