I’m going to see some puppies on Monday so excited! I was going to wait till March but I thought why? I want to be able to go on long walks with the dog. If I get it in January then by summer it’ll be able to go on longer (obviously not too long as don’t want to over exercise as still a pup) walks than if I got it in March.
Going away for 2 nights in feb (although tryna change this if possible) and my friend will come look after the pup which I think will be good for socialising as want it used to as many people as possible.
I did originally want a papillon but going to get a cross breed (papillon cross), makes the insurance is cheaper which is a benefit.
They are papillon spitz crosses. Did find some poodle papillon crosses but didn’t want a dog I’d have to clip - I’d rather deal with shedding twice a year (although the breeder said one she kept before only sheds once a year).
I did want a female really but only 3 males left, I wasn’t to bother. I did originally always want a male but my mum convinced me to get a female 😄.
Got a crate and playpen from fb mp ready. They are ready before Christmas but I’ll collect in January

If theyre 8 to 10 weeks Id collect asap personally. Youre missing out on socialisation time if you wait until January.

Also gets them used to your christmas tree this year. I collected a pup just before Christmas last year and it did go ok and has ignored it this year!

Your dog wont be able to do really long walks until theyre about a year old / fully grown. But will be able to do long plays on grass / sand / soft ground 🤩

Yeah I plan on carrying on long walks although I’d probably not go on very long walks anyway till they are older. Anything to get me out the house is better than I do now. A lot will be socialising as well like going to garden centres etc so won’t be hard walks. A lot will be going somewhere in the car so it’s used to the car as well. Once old enough I plan to do agility as well
I’m waiting till after Christmas because I can get more time off work then plus I have some extra work over new year whereas after I won’t. It’ll only be 10 weeks when I collect anyway, they aren’t old enough to go until end of December. Going to pick one on Monday as I’d rather go in person rather than do it via video call.

If the breeder is the type of breeder who would allow you to do video call (I know you don’t want to) then I would walk away.

I think she offered cause I live far from her. She is happy that I’m going in person. I said to the person going with me that I said I’ll tell them that I’ll think about which puppy I want on the way home incase I notice any red flags when there. And so my friend can also tell me if she notices any. That way I can walk away after seeing them if I need

I agree, get the pup asap and get him/her socialising. I had mine at 8 weeks and she is an absolute social butterfly, I put that down to starting (short) walks and pub trips asap so she can get used to other dogs, people, children, local area asap.

I'd also echo the value of bringing the pup home as soon as you can once they are 8 weeks. It's only a couple of weeks difference but the amount the dog will develop in those couple of weeks is incredible, and you can have such an influence on them at that stage. I definitely under-estimated the value of this before we got our retriever, but fortunately was well advised and read a couple of really helpful books on what to do. Even just exposing her to noises, people, household objects, going in the car that kind of thing, the earlier you can do it in their life you reduce the risk of having a nervous/anxious dog.

If you are planning to leave him overnight with a friend after only a few weeks I'd make sure you familiarise the pup with your friend asap too and maybe try leaving him with them for even an hour or something. We did this with ours and it made such a big difference when she had to stay overnight at their house. It also made our friends less nervous at the prospect as they had walked her before without us.

This 100%, I also felt I bonded so much more with her during the early days (despite sleeping on the sofa). She was crate trained within days and taking herself off to bed (crate) at 10pm nearly every night - and this is two years on.

Another thing I felt helped (if crate training) is ensure that they know it’s their own space, so if my pup goes into her crate it is absolutely her space and I will never try and stroke her or play with her. It’s literally a place for her to sleep and relax and completely off bounds.

Do you still use the crate @S4buk? We stopped using ours when she was about 4 months as we got her a bigger bed that didn't fit inside the crate (but left the crate in its same spot, just put the new bed elsewhere in the lounge). I kid you not, she did not once go back in the crate :ROFLMAO: her new bed became her safe place, albeit that most of the time she sleeps on the sofa anyway.

Saw the pups today, for back late so I said I’d let her know by tomorrow morning which I want. I’m pretty sure I know which one though.
I’m getting it after Xmas because I already agreed to extra work at new year, after new year I don’t have any extra work.
I already have a crate and a playpen. Going shopping after Christmas for all the rest of the stuff. My cats eat out of microchip bowls, I have a spare but don’t think it’ll be big enough for the pup but we will see.

Also was able to swap my two days away in feb to summer so I won’t have to leave him

can I join?
we‘re welcoming a mini sausage in the new year. I’ve always had dogs and done reasonably well with training. I’ve always had terriers who can be stubborn, but current boy is ten so appreciate techniques have probably moved on a bit from that.

I have experience of the breed in so much that my daughter has a 4 year old one who she’s struggled to train, however, daughter isn’t the type to make the dog stand out in the wet and pee so I’m not surprised he won’t do it.

My current old boy really comes out of his shell when my daughters dog visits so I’m hoping he’s going to enjoy his new friend. Took him for a full MOT last week to make sure he was fit and healthy for all the excitement he’s about to get and he is 😂

I confess I have rose tinted glasses on remembering training and puppyhood though….

Decided on this little boy. Any name suggestions? I’m thinking either Ruben or Rico

At the moment he’s either Neville Longbottom or Biggie Smalls with Nev being the favourite. I wanted to go with Kevin but one of the directors at my husbands place is called that so it got vetoed 😂
What are yours?

And make sure to get good insurance cover for a dachshund 😊
Yes my daughters has just recovered from an IVDD flare. He’s insured so all good but a worrying time for her.
I specifically chose a breeder who’s never had ivdd in any of the lines or pups. It’s no guarantee obviously, but I’ve read a lot of it is to do with some dachshund breeders breeding longer dogs putting more pressure on the spine and my daughters is the longest I have ever seen so it didn’t surprise me when it happened.

He’ll be getting the best ongoing cover I can find.

This is my daughters, even daxie designed clothing can be too short for him.

The crate is still up but very, very rarely locked. I shut the living room door at night so she either sleeps on the sofa or in her crate. She normally just takes herself off to her crate around 10pm but I’m sure has a little bit walk around and sleep on the sofa for a bit during the night. But yeah, she really does love it

I love Rico. My colleague just got a puppy called Nico so I feel it’s too close but someone said he won’t care 😅
Nah he won't care! My bestie had an Alfie who sadly crossed rainbow bridge, now I have a Ralf (Ralfy!) She loves him
