Oh god, I hold out no hope for my little pup or my sanity for the next year then 😂

He's soooo mischievous! Yesterday my bf had to dash home from work because I checked the puppy cam and he had used his mouth to pull the tablecloth off our dining table, taking with it a candle and placemats. Fortunately the candle didn't smash and he didn't touch it at all but he did absolutely obliterate my placemats 😂 The room was a tip!

I was cleaning the floors last night and he came running in from the garden and spat a snail out at my feet 😂😂 It's lucky they're cute because these puppies really could send someone crazy!

@Caffeine Fiend has given great advice.

My couple of points. Don't tell a dog off for giving 'warnings' such as growling. Look up ladder of aggression, growling is not the first stage so it sounds like you need to be more aware of body language and what he is telling you. If you tell a dog off for giving you a warning sign, he will learn to skip that stage and go straight to the next warning which is snapping!

Is he first or second generation? By any chance is he red?

Cockerpoos have honestly been breed too much lately and I don't think there's been a lot of care taken to ensure good lines.
Yes he’s red how did you know that?

He's just 6 months so I know he's still young but it really does feel like a step backwards. Puppies are hard work 😂 Thank you though, I will start from the beginning again!
You sound like me with mine puppy ..And hes 6 months ..And hes good at sleeping and going the toilet but becoming from nippy again and a handful ..

It's nice to know we're not alone! At some points I find myself wondering what's wrong with him and why won't he behave but it's nice to hear from other people that it's perfectly normal!

Mine is a cocker spaniel though, not a cockapoo like yours :)

Professional experience 🫣

Farmers/Gun dog owners say that most dogs come into their own around 18-24months. I see flickers of it in my dog (16months), but she just forgets/looses her head sometimes.

Figuring average person lives 80 years and a terrier 14 years that makes her about 6-7 in human years. It's a lot to expect from them.

I’m the same, I just know I would be absolutely devastated if I had to give her up. Thank god for you tattlers!

It probably is a lot to expect but it’s still hard going and coming on here and expressing that it’s hard makes people feel better that they are not alone in how they are feeling …

I would be..I just wish and hope he gets a nicer temperament…He’s great with people but growls at my daughter a lot 🙄🙄

If hes growling at your daughter Purple Star I really would try and get professional advice as soon as you possibly can. Im not saying it would happen but it can go from a growl to a snap quickly.

It is definitely possible to fix this though, so I know its so hard right now but it will get better with good support.

If you were considering rehoming definitely make any rescue know of these sort of resource guarding behaviours.

For everyone else Id say the first year is hellish, its full of loads of periods where you think youve cracked stuff then it backfires 🙈😂 12-24 months is loads of mistakes made by me the owner, trusted my dog more than I should have or got negligent with things like leaving a bin bag in access 🙄

By about 2 my dog was the perfect companion. So perfect I decided to get another one. Hang in there.

@Maid22 how did you get on?

Sorry if my comment has been misinterpreted. I was agreeing it's hard.

Your vet should be able to recommend a behaviourist. Whilst vets can offer advice the best thing is to have someone actually come and witness the behaviour and then someone who can guide you on what you should do when these incidents occur.

There is no harm in chatting with the vet though 😊

Totally agree. Just make sure you get a qualified behaviourist, it's not a protected title, so anyone can call themselves one.

I really needed to read this today 😅😅 mine is such hard work at the moment, I keep finding myself wondering what's wrong with him, why won't he behave, what's wrong with me, what am I doing wrong etc so it's reassuring to know we'll get there in the end

There is nothing wrong with you or him. Its just the process of having a puppy. My eldest dog is 5 and I love him so much it hurts but there are still days he annoys me 🙈🤣

I know its really difficult but try not to blame yourself or him. Youre both learning and sometimes I think its better to have no expectations as then youre less disappointed.

I have 2 children and with my eldest I tortured myself with all the things that werent going right, would clock watch all night when they were awake. It did nothing but make me miserable. If they had a good night or two Id think ah ha weve cracked it and be distraught when I was up all night again. With my 2nd I didnt count the wake ups, didnt check my phone or clock and I just found it so much easier to deal with it.

We put all these expectations on ourself and the dog.

I promise its all worth it 🥰

I've been very glad and thankful to read the last few posts this morning as I'm having a particularly bad day with our puppy already and it's not even lunchtime yet.

For some reason he just seems really agitated today. He keeps trying to bite me more so than usual, use my legs as a scratching pole and keeps barking at me when I try to tell him to sit etc. The barking at me is a new thing so I'm really hoping it's just a bad day and not the start of new bad behavior.

It is so hard some days and sometimes I feel like I'm such a bad puppy mum and am letting him down 😢 But it's so reassuring reading all your posts and I know it'll be worth the pain in the long run.

I know what you mean I feel the same ..Ur not alone in how ur feeling ..How olds ur puppy? What breed is he?

For me and our cockapoo pup socialisation was the key. She’s now six months but we started taking her out for short walks once she had her jabs (I think about 3 months). She now loves every human, dog, cat and pub! It’s exhausting for us but also for the pup as she’s constantly learning, sniffing etc… and then very calm in evening apart from the odd bursts (make sure there’s a toy nearby). I live in Brighton so pretty much everywhere is dog friendly and plenty of puppy parks.

I’m not sure how to get around the neediness though, as I can’t leave a room without her whining.
