I always think of prison on a sunny day. I wonder if they are locked in a cell whilst it's sunny outside or whether they have a garden

Depends on the regime and security category at the particular jail.

They would be locked up after lunch in A, B and C while the jail was in patrol state. After which it would be work/education/visits. Might have an association period after dinner when outside exercise is provided. But its not in the botanical gardens, its a grey enclosed space surrounded by barbed wire.

D category jails in the UK are very different as they are open. They have no walls. No gates. No massive barbed wire fences. And the residents have a key to their own room. As long as they attend work and the roll is checked (when the control room check they aren't missing any) they can and do entertain themselves in the sun.

I was unfortunately a witness to one about 5/6 years ago just prior to the jail going into patrol so we could remove our customer. It wasnt nice

A family member has just been charged with battery and non fatal strangulation. Their first court appearance is this week. Currently on bail. Can anyone explain the process with the first court hearing? What’s the chances of him being sent to prison? He’s just laughing about it and won’t tell family anything and they’re obviously worried. Never been arrested before but he has been known to police since he was a teen with dodgy stuff etc and also did same to his ex but she dropped the charges. Any info would be amazing.

depends what kind of prison, regime , your IEP etc.
if you're on basic & you don't have education or work then you'll be behind your door.
you do get called to go outside , but that will be on your wings exercise 'yard' . Which in the nice weather happened everyday. The healthy gym heads would run around, most would sun bathe. Summer was a killer inside, it got way too hot. I had a fan but it just blew hot air.
I n the winter it was too cold..... Sanitary towels were used to cover the vents on the windows. .
Some prisons have animals, & gardens where veg, flowers, plants etc were grown, which got you outside a lot more .
there's all different kinds of jobs for prisoners,

There is a cafe/waiting room at most places now. Then you get taken over to be searched/sniffed etc. Have a look a the specific establishments website. Should tell you there

So obviously you can't work whilst you're in prison, do you get benefits?

Can you take your own make up/face wash/shampoo?

I've visited my fella in 3 different jails and it was in those jails.

Ive worked in 6 jails and still do now and I’ve never heard anything like first come first served visits

There was a prisoner/correctional officer situation in my husbands prison before I met him, it was a mindfuck of a story but I can’t go into it cos it could be googled and I don’t want his state to be known for privacy reasons.

We were allowed pyjamas/nightshirts in my prison. They could be sent in, or brought in if you had them in court before you were sentenced. They had to be appropriate though, shouldn’t be skimpy or see through. You weren’t meant to wear them on the wing but people would chance it, then get sent to get changed,

I read Orange Is The New Black but didn't find Piper's account very compelling. Just kept going on about how lucky she was to be middle class and have her friends and family send in loads of stuff for her.

My image of a Women's prison is a mix between Bad Girls and Wentworth However going by @Ambrosie's posts it's not quite as dramatic as that

Ah right thanks. So does this leave the prison short staffed?

In the prison I worked in there was a rota for bed watches so it would usually be overtime for the staff who chose to do them.

That’s heartbreaking bamboo. I hadn’t even considered being innocent of a serious crime I was only thinking fraud or something like that. To be in prison for murder when you didn’t do it is nightmarish.

110% agree with you. As would every prisoner governor I know. Covid bolloxed things to a point. But in my experience of UK, jails there are long wait lists for everything. The management of the jail try to do their best but it is nothing short of firefighting. The PSAM's (what used to be DDC's) are in the same boat. Until there is serious investment in the system (and its the same in a lot countries) which results in the rehabilitation part as opposed to just a big lock box, nothing will change im afraid.

I'm not UK adjacent but for my job I have to understand it because occasionally we have to deal with it (still). We looked at it when it came in (yes Im that old) and questioned our life choices even from outside the UK.

He's doing well that (a) he got P and (b) he's sticking to his licence. Fair play to him and long may it continue. And FWIW, he's got my positive feelings headed his way. Because we aren't all c*nts

They did an incredible job at sweeping this under the rug! I’ve read a few different accounts from the prisoners and most state that they were eventually evacuated to a bridge but held by armed officers who couldn’t (or maybe wouldn’t) provide anything for them (water, food, medication, etc)

I was so shocked when I heard about it, and was really surprised it wasn't in the news more. It was awful. I dont know if anyone has been held accountable. But they literally left them to die. Hurricane Katrina was a cat 5 storm and the rising waters were the cause of many deaths. Imagine being in that prison with the water rising, no way of escape. With no food or water, not to mention violence from other inmates.
It's shocking it really is.
